The ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the landscape in Ciro Guerra’s Embrace of the Serpent, centering on an Amazonian shaman, the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who forge a friendship with him over 40 years. It was inspired by the journals of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic plant.
