Salsipuedes: A Tale of Love, War, and Anchovies, a sparkling comedy by the beloved Daniel Catán – sometimes called “Mexico’s Puccini.” If you fell in love with his lush, gorgeous sound in our 2020 production of Il Postino, get ready to hear what Catán sounds like when he’s having fun. Set on the exotic Caribbean island of Salsipuedes (“get out if you can” in Spanish), the story follows two newlywed couples whose honeymoons are spectacularly derailed when the husbands accidentally end up aboard a ship headed off to fight the Nazis. Along the way, they get tangled up in a corrupt government plot involving the island’s most prized commodity: anchovies. Witty, warm, and pulsing with Caribbean rhythms – great opera doesn’t always have to end in tears.
