Opera Southwest presents Astor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires, a fully-staged opera with orchestra, sung in Spanish with both English and Spanish translation supertitles, and presented in two acts with one intermission.
OSW is thrilled to present Piazzolla’s only opera in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The story goes that his surrealist depiction of the titular Maria’s sleepwalk through violence, death, the afterlife, and rebirth was composed entirely on the bandoneón. The opera effortlessly weaves classical contrapuntal techniques together with milongas, cabarets, and mid-century jazz for a thrilling dance through the underbelly of Buenos Aires. Anthony Barrese conducts.
$15, $29, $45, $59, $75, $89; discounts for groups of ten or more, patrons 30 and younger, and those who attend all three “Inside Opera” workshops between Jan. 23 and Feb. 5, 2019.
