¡Globalquerque!, Avokado Artists, and the NHCC present the International Cinema Series in September; films in this series are presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico’s Twelfth Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture, held at the NHCC on September 23 & 24.
The Dark Horse is based on the true story of Maori speed-chess master Genesis Potini, who was diagnosed as bipolar and spent his life in and out of hospitals, with short jail stints for vagrancy. Taught chess as a child by his older brother, he was a phenom-prodigy, winning competitions and eventually helping form a chess club for underprivileged kids in his community called The Eastern Knights. Potini died in 2011; the organization still exists today.
