In Helena Taberna’s La buena nueva, a young parish priest in a socialist village must confront the ecclesiastical and military hierarchy, putting his own life at stake, when the nationalists occupy the town following the uprising of 1936 and begin to execute his parishioners. His only support comes from his friendship with the village teacher, whose husband was killed at the beginning of the conflict.
2008; Spanish with English subtitles; 108 minutes; not rated.

Carolina Astudillo’s film El gran vuelo is the story of Clara Pueyo Jornet, a militant member of the Communist Party who escapes from Barcelona’s Les Corts prison in the early days of the Franco dictatorship. From that moment on, she vanishes without a trace. She had been living on the run and seeking to escape from the rigidity of her own party as well; her story is also the story of the women of her time and their struggle for freedom in a society trying to repress them.
2014; Spanish with English subtitles; 60 minutes; not rated.

Filmed over six years, El silencio de otros, by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar, documents the epic struggle of victims of Franco’s 40-year dictatorship, as they organize a groundbreaking international lawsuit and fight a “pact of forgetting” around the crimes committed against them. A cautionary tale about fascism and the dangers of forgetting the past, the film speaks powerfully to issues of transitional justice and universal jurisdiction.
2018; Spanish with English subtitles; 95 minutes; not rated.
