Preserving Family Traditions and Stories: “Steps of Our Ancestors”

Please join Historian and Researcher, Yvette Cohn Stoor, an American Folklife Center Community Collections Grant recipient, for her work documenting unique New Mexican traditions, creating a permanent record of how the rich and vibrant communities are honoring their past and celebrating their present. Her work for the Library of Congress American Folklife Center produced a documentary highlighting passed down traditions from small town New Mexico Villages, “Steps of Our Ancestors.”

Steps of Our Ancestors” is a documentary that follows community historians and descendants in rural New Mexico as they preserve and revive centuries-old ritual dances-such as the Danza de Los Matachines, Los Comanchitos and Los Comanches traditions-revealing how faith, history, and identity continue to shape village life while safeguarding cultural traditions at risk of being forgotten.

Ms. Stoor will share tips on documentation/research.  She serves on various Genealogical societies boards, currently on “La Merced de Canon de Carnue.” July 2026, she will present her project at the International Symposium for Music Education in Montreal, Canada.

Free Community Event, no advance registration required.
