DESCRIPTION:30th Anniversary of Blood In\, Blood Out\nFeaturing Special Guest Melina Martinez\n6:30 pm: Reception and Book Signing\n7:30 pm: Readings \nJoin us for an evening with Jimmy Santiago Baca in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Blood In\, Blood Out on Saturday\, April 27 at 6:30 pm. \nLocated in the Bank of America Theatre\, this event will feature a reception and book signing for the Blood In\, Blood Out Coffee Table Book from 6:30 – 7:30 pm as well as readings featuring Melina Martinez and Jimmy Santiago Baca followed by Q&A from 7:30 – 8:30 pm. \nThis limited-edition book is a 30th anniversary tribute to the cult classic film\, and features production materials with hundreds of unseen behind-the-scenes photographs and film stills shot by photographer Merrick Morton\, paintings by the late San Antonio artist Adan Hernández\, whose mural “Carnalismo” is shown in the film’s final scene\, and original poems by screenwriter Jimmy Santiago Baca. \nFree community event. In New Mexico’s Moses\, Gutiérrez dives deeply into López Tijerina’s religious formation during the 1940s and 1950s. An Assemblies of God evangelist turned Pentecostal itinerant preacher\, Tijerina used his secularized apocalyptic theology to inspire the dispossessed heirs of Spanish and Mexican land grants fighting to recuperate ancestral lands throughout northern New Mexico and the Southwest. \nFree community event. Please join us for a reading and workshop on January 25! \n\n\nAbout the Author: Dr. Gorman is an associate professor at the University of Arizona and serves Director of the Spanish as a Heritage Language Program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.  Her research interests center around issues of language and identity within U.S. Latina/o/x communities and in U.S. Latina/o/x popular culture. Her interdisciplinary work also focuses on heritage language pedagogy and its intersections with bilingual education. They were friends for over forty years\, shared working on the University of New Mexico campus\, and lived near one another. Anaya is best known for his book\, Bless Me\, Ultima. In this volume\, Dr. Blea recalls platicas\, conversations\, with her friend\, Rudy\, about the essence of his writing\, growing up in New Mexico\, the nature of university life\, the art and business of writing\, publishing\, death\, dying\, and spirituality. Blea\, also an award-winning author and a sociologist\, draws from their shared community understanding\, and her ability to write in a multidisciplinary manner to poetically close the gap between literature and social science to render us an opportunity to say good-bye to Rudolfo Anaya\, the godfather of Chicano literature. \nOn August 7\, the Center will host a reading and book-signing with Dr. Blea from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
