SUMMARY:Abrepaso Flamenco & Alice Blumenfeld: Vacío/Void
DESCRIPTION:8 pm Saturday\,\n 2 pm Saturday & Sunday \nAbrepaso seeks to create honest flamenco dance that provokes the audience to think\, feel\, question\, and remember our shared humanity. The name Abrepaso comes from the Spanish phrase “abrir paso\,” which can signify making or paving the way and breaking open space. The company aims to establish a contemporary approach to flamenco in the United States\, breaking down boundaries and stereotypes through professional\, quality performances and education. This flamenco performance explores the voids that thwart us from seeing our own interconnectedness to others and nature. Using environmentalist Rachel Carson’s work as a starting point\, the flamenco movements and new music develop a dynamic approach to the figurative and literal voids we experience in our lives. Featuring Alice Blumenfeld\, composer Lauren Valerie Coons\, guitarist Misael Barraza\, and singer Meagan Chandler.\n$28\, $34 w/ a $2 discount for NHCC members \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Sacred Journeys with Robert Mirabal
DESCRIPTION:Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm \nSacred Journeys\, presented by Festival Ballet Albuquerque in partnership with the NHCC\, is a reflection of our New Mexican cultures and storytelling through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Our Hispanic culture is prominent in the story “Las Soldaderas\,” choreographed by Dominic Guerra and depicting the story of the young lovers and the many brave women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal joins FBA onstage\, integrating Native American Pueblo culture of northern New Mexico with the Hispanic culture of the region. Choreographers for the project include featured choreographer Jock Soto\, Patricia Dickinson Wells\, Trey Pickett\, and Natalee Maxwell\, presenting Robert Mirabal favorites from the albums Songs from the Painted Cave\, The River\, and others. Mirabal\, a world-renowned musician\, composer\, poet\, actor\, and screenwriter\, is dedicated to keeping alive the centuries-old customs of Taos Pueblo\, as well as merging his Indigenous American sound with the music of Africa\, Asia\, and the Caribbean in a world music style that defies categorization. \nJock Soto was born on the Navajo reservation in Gallup\, NM to a Navajo Mother and a Puerto Rican father.  Following in the footsteps of his mother\, he first learned to hoop dance — an early foundation for what became one of the most celebrated careers at the New York City Ballet.  On the eve of his retirement from stage 2005\, The New York Times wrote “Ballet is a man called Jock.” \nOf Jock Soto’s memoir “Every Step You Take\,”ten-time Tony Award winner and recipient of the National Medal of Arts\, Tommy Tune said “Airborne in spirit\, earthbound in truth\, the words are moving and masterful.  Like the dancer himself.” \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $38\, $47 w/ $2 off for seniors\, children 10 and younger and NHCC members.\nGroup rates available.

SUMMARY:Son Como Son 25th Anniversary: A Retrospective Celebration of Salsa in Albuquerque\, New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nThis 25th anniversary concert is Son Como Son’s tribute to the rich lineage of Cuban music. It is a tribute to the dance—the dance between the Yoruban spiritual world and the Spanish colonialists\, the dance between the past and the future\, the dance where the ocean meets the desert. Most of all\, it is a tribute to the dancers of Albuquerque—to each and every one who has buoyed this ship for the past 25 years and helped to put Albuquerque on the salsa map.\n$24\, $25\, $27 w/ $2 discount for seniors/children 12 and younger\, and $3 discount for NHCC members \n \nIn October 1992\, after building successful musical careers in Cuba and recording and traveling across the globe\, Daniel and César Bauvallet migrated from Havana to Albuquerque\, NM. Finding a thriving salsa scene in their new home\, the Bauvallet brothers jumped right in\, playing with a variety of bands in their first few months on the scene. Almost immediately\, their musical sensibilities began to influence the Latin music soundscape. \nIn the spring of 1993\, César formed his own band\, naming it Son Como Son (“They Are as They Are”)\, and coining the phrase “Salsa Cuban Style.” His vision was to organize an ensemble of skilled musicians\, eager to learn a distinctive form of salsa\, who would play his original compositions and arrangements that were stylistically Cuban. The players\, from a variety of musical backgrounds and levels of experience\, were all devoted to advancing musically and working together; virtually all the current members of Son Como Son have been with the band for at least 24 years. \nEl tiempo sigue su marcha sin parar\, solo perdura lo que es original. Lo que en un breve momento en la vida dejó una huella. (César Bauvallet)

SUMMARY:4th Annual South American Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nThe 4th Annual South American Folk Festival seeks to unite Albuquerque’s South American community in a day of cultural experience and connection through music\, dance\, and food. In addition to food vendors from participating countries\, the festival will feature traditional dancers from Colombia\, Peru\, Venezuela\, Chile\, Brazil\, Argentina\, and Ecuador. \nHighlights of the event include local band Baracutanga performing a traditional batucada and performances by Argentine Tango instructors Eva Garlez and Pablo Rodriguez\, Peruvian dance/choreographers Fiorella Vera Adrianzen and Yessenia Lentz\, and the Odara Dance Ensemble. A Latin fusion group with musicians from all over Latin America as well as the United States\, Bamuayā will be releasing their latest CD in Albuquerque. \nAnd\, proudly representing the Colombian culture\, this event will again welcome Raices Colombianas who\, for the past four years have delighted us with their traditional dances\, folkloric costumes\, and energetic choreographies. They will be presenting two songs\, both of which have folkloric rhythms with roots in the African cultures that integrated with the native Colombian culture.  These dances reflect the themes of courtship and slavery\, but\, at the same time\, tell the stories of ordinary activities like fishing and agriculture. The costumes have a Spanish influence.  Men’s costumes in general are white and in light materials with hats and scarves. The women use wide skirts called polleras.  In addition\, women wear big floral arrangements in their hair to complete the costume.  Instruments commonly heard in this music include drums\, flutes\, marimbas\, and maracas. \n$14 in advance\, $16 day of show w/ $2 discount for NHCC members; free for children age 12 and younger

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Isabel Bayón Dju Dju
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 31 presents Compañía Isabel Bayón’s Dju Dju\, an Israel Galván creation for Isabel Bayón. \nIn an extraordinary collaboration\, avant-garde choreographer and dancer Israel Galván directs classical dancer Isabel Bayón as she reinvents herself\, exploring the demons and superstitions of the flamenco world along with her husband\, guitarist Jesús Torres\, and dancers Alicia Márquez and Nieves Casablanca. “Torres recites a litany of her superstitions; Bayón crosses herself\, or shoos off bad spirits even as she’s willfully stomping on glass. The music veers from eerie lullabies to full church-organ portentousness…. Dju Dju works ultimately because it draws on qualities close to flamenco’s heart: wayward rhythms\, unresolved dissonances\, irrational passions\, the summoning of hidden forces.” (Sanjoy Roy\, The Guardian) \nBorn in Seville\, Isabel Bayón has performed at numerous national and international festivals\, and formed her own company in 2001\, creating a series of award-winning shows. She is also a choreographer for the Spanish National Ballet and the Andalusian Dance Company\, among others\, and a teacher at the María de Ávila Higher Dance Conservatory in Madrid. She received the National Dance Award in 2013.\n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85

SUMMARY:Remember the Time
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nMusic has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas\, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012\, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue\, then in its seventh year.  This event\, showcasing great rock\, soul\, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s\, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion of some of the city’s finest musicians from that era. In 2014 the Barelas Coffee House presented Oh What A Night\, and in 2015 Cruizin’ Central\, to sold-out houses; these were unique opportunities for family and friends to come together and listen\, sing along\, and dance to music from the 1950s through the 1980s. In 2016 and 2017\, the first and second Remember the Time dance concerts brought back memories of happy times at venues such as the Civic Auditorium\, Leo’s La Roc\, and the Far West. This year’s concert\, focusing on more recent decades\, once again celebrates life\, love\, and music at its best with great Albuquerque musicians who have been entertaining New Mexico audiences over the years.  Featured bands are Picoso\, Fat City\, and Soul Divine\, three dynamic local dance bands with dedicated fan bases. \nOpened in 1978 as a precursor to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood\, the Barelas Coffee House is itself an iconic Albuquerque venue and a popular local meeting place as well as a tourist attraction.  The NHCC is once again entering into a presenting partnership with the Barelas Coffee House\, through owner Michael Anthony Gonzales\, for the 3rd annual Remember the Time dance concert.\n$27 w/ $2 off for NHCC members

SUMMARY:Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and Baracutanga
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLos Gaiteros de San Jacinto\, a traditional folkloric cumbia group from Colombia’s Caribbean region\, has been active since 1940. Their music preserves the traditional rhythms and sounds that are the product of a mixture of Indigenous\, Spanish\, and Afro-Colombian heritage. Dating back at least to the time of Bolivar\, gaitero music is played on two flutes (gaitas) and a maraca\, both of Indigenous origin\, and drums of African origin\, through the descendants of the many African slaves who passed through the country’s Caribbean coast. The group’s founder\, Antonio “Toño” Fernández\, is credited with paving the way for modern cumbia’s enormous popularity throughout the Americas by being the first to successfully put words to gaitero music. The group is currently headed by four of the original members\, who perform with a new generation of gaiteros. Thanks in large part to them\, gaitero music has become one of the most influential traditional styles in Colombian popular music today. \nBaracutanga\, a New Mexico-based seven-piece band representing four different countries (Bolivia\, Ecuador\, Peru\, and the U.S.)\, prides itself on arranging traditional South American rhythms in new and interesting ways\, such as mixing huayño and cumbia with Middle Eastern darbuka\, or Afro-Cuban batá and Afro-Peruvian festejo with Andean zampoñas\, among other combinations. This kind of experimentation\, blending ancestral traditions with a modern sensibility\, results in an exciting\, distinctive Latin flavor that is all its own. Lyrically and musically\, Baracutanga proposes to build bridges between the south and north\, finding common ground in creating songs that cross linguistic and cultural barriers and promoting cultural experiences that empower Latinos with a message of self-affirmation. Baracutanga will be celebrating the release of their latest single and video “Cuida Tus Espaldas.\n$22\, $27 w/ $2 off for NHCC Members
