SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, Nómada
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in Nómada. Featuring three bailaoras\, three bailaores\, three singers\, and two guitarists\, the work is a “collective journey” framing the art of flamenco in different geographic regions and different textures. It develops Liñan’s work as a choreographer\, director\, and dancer—exploring the different worlds that sustain him on his diverse paths. \nHumans remain innately nomadic\, now searching for the places and forms that meet emotional needs as well as providing basic sustenance. As these artists investigate new physical and emotional realms\, their performance is “a dance to movement\, a song to the immense tapestry in which we live\, with its infinite possibilities\, and with a particular ode to the creative migration responsible for personal and artistic survival.”\n$30\, $40\, $60\, $75

SUMMARY:(Des)Encaracolarse (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday at 8 pm\, Sunday at 2 pm \n(Des)Encaracolarse uses flamenco to explore the myriad metaphors contained in a seashell. The world-class artists and performers in Alice Blumenfeld’s company journey through the curves and spirals\, echoes and reflections that make up the odysseys of shells. The title comes from a word invented by Pablo Neruda to show his obsession with shells. The performance premieres original artwork\, choreography\, music\, and costuming\, along with traditional sounds of Spain and Latin American poetry. \nBlumenfeld’s dancing has been called “sharp and exhilarating” (Philadelphia Inquirer)\, and possessing a “fierce presence (her movements seem to arise from several feet beneath the ground)…” (Thinking Dance).\n$29 w/ a $5 discount for students\, seniors and NHCC Members

SUMMARY:Panquetzaliztli: An Aztec Celebration of the Season
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm—Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nKalpulli Ehecatl/Ehecatl Aztec Dancers and Friends present Panquetzaliztli\, a theatrical performance in three acts. The presentation\, an Aztec celebration of the season\, draws upon Mesoamerican creation myths and the history behind traditional holiday customs and includes a lyrically performed version of the Panquetzaliztli (Alzamiento de los Estandartes\, or Raising of the Banners) celebration\, a retelling of the history of Yankwik Tletl (Fuego Nuevo\, or the New Fire Ritual\, performed during Panquetzaliztli every 52 years)\, and\, as a closing act\, the Serpent of Fire Dance. \nPanquetzaliztli\, from December 16 to January 2\, is the fifteenth Zempoalilwitl\, or twenty-day period\, in the Mexika (Aztec) calendar. The seasonal festival goes by the same name\, and is celebrated ten days into the twenty-day period. It celebrates the winter solstice and the birth of the new Sun as Witzilopochtli (Hummingbird on the Left)\, one of the principal energies honored by the Mexika. \nThe festival of Panquetzaliztli is celebrated with dance\, music\, and a foot race. An effigy of Witzilopochtli is constructed from amaranth flour and agave nectar\, and consumed after the race as an integral part of the festivities. Tamales are also made and eaten\, and mock battles in honor of the season are waged between students of rival telpochkallis (schools). During the entire twenty days\, gratitude is shown towards all trees and plants for providing fruits\, grains\, herbs\, firewood\, etc.\, and they are adorned with decorations in the form of painted banners fabricated from strips of papel de amate (bark paper). \nKalpulli Ehecatl has been active in New Mexico for almost forty years\, educating the public about indigenous Mexika traditions while entertaining with warrior-style Mexika\, or Aztec\, dance.\n$12 w/ $2 discount for students/seniors/NHCC members
