DESCRIPTION:Each year in March the National Hispanic Cultural Center celebrates women with programming that honors their contributions to dance\, music\, theatre\, art\, poetry\, films\, novels\, and much more. DESCRIPTION:2 pm & 7 pm \nDance Visions: Festival of New Ballets is headlined by a new ballet by David Chavez. Chavez\, a dance icon in Albuquerque during the 1980s and early ‘90s who is known for such masterpiece ballets as Sleepy Hollow\, Carmina Burana\, and The Jungle Book\, has created his most epic ballet in over 20 years. His new work\, The Humiliation of Venus: A Mythical Fantasy\, is a multimedia one-act ballet based on mythological characters\, complete with Venus/Aphrodite\, Ares/Mars\, Adonis\, Pan\, and over 40 dancers\, with special stage combat guest artists Angelo and A.J. Collado. \n \nDominic Guerra has choreographed Las Soldaderas\, depicting the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Other choreographies include neoclassical works by Dr. Mel Tomlinson to music by Ravel\, Alex Ossadnik to music by Satie\, and Patricia Dickinson Wells’ work\, loosely based on survivors of catastrophe and war\, to music from the soundtrack of Schindler’s List. DESCRIPTION:8 pm—Friday & Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nIn Fragmentos\, Alice Blumenfeld and Esteban Garza will create an intimate\, cutting-edge flamenco experience in the NHCC Salon Ortega that includes poetry and spoken word as well as dance. It will include original music by Alex Conde (Valencia\, Spain) on the piano\, Joaquín Gallegos (Santa Fe\, NM) on the guitar and Guillermo Barrón (Monterrey\, México) on percussion. \nOur relationships with others\, objects\, places\, and the world make up parts of our whole\, but in any one moment\, are we complete? We leave fragments of ourselves with everyone we encounter. Sometimes it takes understanding just a small fragment to better see the whole. Fragmentos\, will examine these ideas through flamenco music and dance. \nAlice Blumenfeld’s dancing has been hailed as “sharp and exhilarating\,” and her groundbreaking contemporary choreography pushes the boundaries of flamenco\, breaking down stereotypes of the genre. Blumenfeld was the first and only Presidential Scholar in the Arts from New Mexico\, and has toured nationally as well as performing in Spain. She will be accompanied by Texas native Esteban Garza\, now residing in Albuquerque\, in a performance that includes poetry and spoken word as well as dance. \nAlex Conde is an award-winning jazz and flamenco pianist with degrees from Berklee College of Music and the Jose Iturbi Conservatory of Music in Barcelona. His works have been performed across the globe. DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Marco Flores in Entrar al Juego. In this contemporary and very theatrical production\, Flores manipulates space and experiments with time—slowing it down\, speeding it up\, and changing its direction to open up a temporary timeline from another world and trap people and objects in an alternative dimension. \nFlores’ first large-scale choreographic work\, DeFlamencas\, explored the female universe; his second creation\, Tránsito\, reflected his interest in looking within. Subsequently\, he examined men’s actions and relationships in Laberíntica. With this new work\, he expands his artistic focus and direction as well as the dynamics of his choreography. The creative process in Entrar al Juego\, activated by intergenerational concerns\, begins by bringing together artists of various ages and origins\, with differing techniques and experiences. Breaking with traditional conceptions of hierarchy and methodology\, Flores involves the artists in a collective composition\, where the actions of each are essential to the development of the others\, as all discover their own strategies to move\, to be still\, and to continue with the work\, both individually and as a group. Along with stage director and choreographer Juan Carlos Lérida\, he proposes to the participants in Entrar al Juego that they dance in a timeless place\, and the audience witnesses how people transform when confronted with the need to continue\, to resolve the unknown nature of that place.\n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85

DESCRIPTION:10 am \nWe’d like to let you in on a little secret. \nEach year\, ¡Globalquerque! kicks off with a free concert for our local school kids. This mini-fest features two of our regular performers doing short sets as a way to introduce the kids to some cool different cultures. \nThis year the participating bands are Trad.Attack! (Estonia) and Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo (Venezuela). \nThis year we are opening the program up to the general public. Come share some great music and the joy and enthusiasm of seeing the kids engage with the bands. DESCRIPTION:Friday at 7 pm\nSaturday at 2 pm \nShoes for the Santo Niño is the story of Julianita\, the youngest of eleven children\, who slips out of her home one evening to take a pair of “practical” shoes that she has made to the Santo Niño de Atocha. When she enters the church\, the Santo Niño and the saints come to life\, and Julianita is whisked off into an evening of mystery\, magic\, and miracles. \nThis joyous piece by the Santa Fe Opera depicts the important role of the Santo Niño de Atocha as part of the traditional cultural fabric of northern New Mexico in both Hispanic and Native American families. The tale of Julianita and the Santo Niño\, passed down from generation to generation\, is adapted from the charming children’s story by Peggy Pond Church. The Santo Niño is known as an advocate for healing\, primarily of children\, and many believe that he wears the shoes left by pilgrims who visit his shrines to walk abroad and heal sick children while they sleep. \nPhoto by Brandon Soder.\n$7 for everyone
