SUMMARY:¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour 2020
DESCRIPTION:6- 8 pm (new time!) \nThis year\, in the spirit of the NHCC’s 20th Anniversary\, we have invited back some of the artists that have contributed to the success of Happy Arte Hour over the years. Many of these artists were part of past exhibitions or have pieces of art in our permanent collection. \nOn the first Thursday of the month\, NHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting\, which includes snacks\, refreshments\, and beer & wine for sale from Pop Fizz. This is a great opportunity for friends to hang out\, a unique date night option\, or a place to come solo and connect with fellow art enthusiasts. \nOn March 5\, Micaela Seidel will join us for a collage workshop! \n \nDuring this workshop\, you will enter a whirlwind of shape and color. You will play with positive and negative shapes to construct simple but amazing still life collages and surreal self-portraits. Micaela will introduce you to one of her favorite pastimes; the “glue-draw-glue” technique and we will go beyond ready-made collage papers and make some of our own.  Come away with new approaches as well as something intriguing to hang on the wall. \n“We are inundated with images. Find the ones that resonate with you and infuse them with new life by making them your own. Collage invites you to alter what you see\, rearrange it\, add to it. Your creations are your children. Dress them up\, love them.” –Micaela Seidel on her art-making process. \nOptional supplies to bring with you:  Images that you have collected that you don’t mind cutting\, gluing or drawing on. Scissors and or knives that make cutting easier for you. Collage/art supplies that you wish to use or share.  We will have watercolor paper\, collage materials\, drawing materials\, paint\, and glue. \nPlease pre-register HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare). Registration for the following month is available the day after the current program month. \nFor more information please call or email Elena Baca at 505-246-2261 or ElenaD.Baca@state.nm.us \nFree\, $5+ donations are encouraged to support the artists & purchase supplies

SUMMARY:La Canoa - Rosebud: Population 7
DESCRIPTION:All events at the NHCC through April 9\, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed.\nPlease call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. \n2pm – 4pm \nGiving shape and form to the rich cultural heritage of family and homeland. Erlinda Gonzales Berry reads and discusses her coming-of-age collection of stories as the product of remembering\, of giving shape and form to the rich cultural heritage bequeathed to her by her antepasados and beloved homeland. “As I attempt to shape the final stage of my journey on this planet\, I feel the abiding presence of memory rather than intellect. In my waking hours and in my dreams those who came before me — my parents\, my grandparents\, my vecinos\, the landscapes of my homeland\, appear and reappear\, leaving me with a deep need to insert them in the written record so they will continue to exist after my memory has vanished.” \nThis is a FREE event OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. \n \nErlinda Gonzales Berry is the author of Las Mujeres Hablan: An Anthology of Nuevo Mexicana Writers (1988)\, Pasó por aquí: Critical Essays on the New Mexican literary tradition\, 1542-1988 (1989)\, Paletitas de Guayaba (1991) and Rosebud: Population 7 (2018). She is one of five daughters born to Canuto and Carlota Gonzales and raised in northeastern New Mexico. She attended high school at the El Rito Normal and received her BA and PhD degrees from the University of New Mexico. She held professorial positions at Earlham College\, New Mexico State University\, the University of New Mexico and Oregon State University where she currently is a Professor Emerita. After retiring from OSU in 2007\, she founded and was executive Director of Casa Latinos Unidos in Corvallis Oregon until 2015.
