SUMMARY:Rendered Presence: Artistas de Nuevo México
DESCRIPTION:Rendered Presence: Artistas de Nuevo México – Guest curated by Vicente Telles\, the exhibition explores artworks by artists living and working throughout New Mexico. Many of the artworks are figurative and created on a scale that challenges limited understandings of New Mexican art. In their own way\, each artist explores identity and the self\, art history\, and the expanse of Hispanic\, Chicana/o/x\, and Latina/o/x contemporary art. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by Bank of America. \nParticipating Artists / Artistas participantes: \nVanessa Alvarado \nBeedallo \nGabriela Campos \nRubén Cantú \nPola Lopez \nAndres Martinez \nIsabela Ortega \nEric Romero \nTravis Ruiz \nMarie Sena \nVicente Telles \nDaisy Quezada Ureña \nJim Vogel \n  \nAbout the curator: \nVicente Telles is a Santero and Cultural Iconographer who is driven by the desire to honor the culture and tradition of his native New Mexico. He began painting traditional retablos using natural pigments created from clays and minerals on homemade gesso\, which is then sealed with an archival varnish. Always looking for ways to push boundaries\, his style has evolved to include various interpretations of traditional Catholic and cultural iconography\, which is evident in his social commentary retablos and his ongoing border culture series. In recent years\, Telles has worked to honor his network of fellow artists and is engaging in opportunities to expand network connections through organizing art shows throughout the southwest. Recently\, he was instrumental in organizing the multi-site exhibition Son de Allí y son de Acá in Albuquerque as well as in San Diego at Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Convergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest
DESCRIPTION:June 7\, 2024 – February 23\, 2025 \nConvergence x Crossroads: Street Art from the Southwest is an exhibition in the Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center that showcases the vibrancy and ingenuity of the street art scenes in New Mexico\, Texas\, Arizona\, California\, and Northern Mexico presenting artworks by artists who identify as Chicano/a/x\, Latino/a/x\, Indigenous\, and Native American. The artists whose work is featured in the exhibition use the street as their medium to create graffiti and/or murals.  On the street\, their work is widely accessible to passersby\, yet also ephemeral. The artists often know the cityscape intimately and their art is a significant marker of place. \n \nThe exhibition depicts a cultural convergence of differing styles of street art from across the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico including graffiti and murals. The exhibit will provide a unique opportunity for the NHCC to collaborate with artists and community members in new ways as we strive to illuminate the significance of this artform at home and throughout the Southwest. The exhibit will feature over 25 artists from across the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico and open dialogue around street art from this era.

SUMMARY:Paño Connections - Corazón Knows No Bounds

This is the second iteration of this exhibit\, and Martinez’s goal is to expand connections among those who are passionate about this body of work. \nFeatured Artists: \nAdan Hernandez \, “Big Dave” Griego\, Carlos Contreras\, Carlos “Gordo” Vigil\, Chuey Armenta\, Crystalynn Maestas\, David C. Luna\, Eric Christo Martinez\, Eric Javier Martinez\, Eric Martinez\, Gerald Lovato\, Jeremy Hovey\, Jesse Casias\, Jimmy Santiago Baca\, Joey Nelson\, Keith Coughenhour\, Kevin Herrera Mauldin\, Leticia Luna\, Merrick Morton\, Phillip “Oso” Barrios\, Taylor Hackford \nAdditionally\, Paños Connections builds upon The Rudy Padilla Paño Project at the NHCC Art Museum.  The Rudy Padilla Paño Project includes a collection of art and paños by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists that was amassed by the late collector and community advocate\, Rudy Padilla\, his archive\, a traveling exhibit\, and catalogue.  This collaboration with Martinez builds upon the dialogue that honors the longstanding and ever-evolving artistic traditions born inside and expanding beyond the United States prison system.

SUMMARY:Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection
DESCRIPTION:October 6\, 2023 to April 14\, 2024 \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum is pleased to present Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection\, an exhibition celebrating paños as an art form and the contributions of incarcerated artists to the broader fields of Chicano and American art. The exhibition features over 100 paños or pañuelos (Spanish for cloth or handkerchief) amassed by the late collector and community advocate\, Rudy Padilla\, as well as artworks by New Mexican artists whose work has been influenced by the style and visual vocabulary of paño arte. \nThe Rudy Padilla Paño Collection was acquired by the Art Museum at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in 2019 and it is the largest public collection of its kind in the United States. The artworks and archive are significant resources for understanding and celebrating an important form of artistic and cultural expression created by incarcerated (and formerly incarcerated) artists from Chicano and Latino Communities across the Southwest U.S. The exhibition\, co-curated by Jadira Gurulé (NHCC Head Curator and Visual Arts Program Manager) and Rebecca Gomez (NHCC Curator)\, explores the interconnectedness of paño arte and Chicano and American art\, honors the social and cultural legacy of Padilla’s work\, and examines the topic of incarceration in contemporary society. \nTo learn more about the exhibition or share your experiences with paño arte\, please email Rebecca.Gomez@dca.nm.gov

It examines their impact on the permanent collection\, the importance of the stories that have been told\, and celebrates the artists that have participated in shaping the identity of the museum over the years. These exhibitions have worked to expand a collective understanding of American art and identity through the lens of Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, Latinx\, and Latin American creative expression. \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the opening of Mira Mira on the Wall in the museum was postponed and a selection of artworks were presented online in a virtual exhibit. We are excited to present the full exhibition with additional artworks in the museum itself in 2021! \nPlease click here to see the Virtual Exhibition of Mira\, Mira On the Wall: Reflecting on 20 Years of Exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Desde Mi Balcón / From My Balcony
DESCRIPTION:Desde Mi Balcón / From My Balcony\nBosque Gallery outdoor exhibition space \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) Visual Arts Program\, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque and the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington\, D. C. presents “Desde Mi Balcón/From My Balcony\,” a new exhibit on view April 8 through Sept. 10\, 2021\, in the Bosque Gallery outdoor exhibition space. \n \nThis traveling exhibition consists of 28 large-format photographs (80 x 70 centimeters) of day-to-day situations\, images that could be seen from windows and balconies\, taken by ordinary citizens of Spain last year during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nPhotoEspaña\, the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts of Madrid\, aware of the role that balconies and windows could play in the early days of a national stay-at-home order\, launched a call through social media to Spaniards who wanted to share their images during the quarantine. More than 60\,000 submissions were received and the 23rd edition of the festival was inaugurated with exhibitions in 50 cities across Spain. \n“No matter where you are from\, the images exhibited in ‘Desde Mi Balcón’ draws you in and certainly provide often emotional and humorous reflection on the experiences the world has gone through during the past year or more\,” said Tey Marianna Nunn\, director of the Art Museum and Visual Arts Program at the NHCC. “They are poignant reminders of the importance of place\, communities\, family\, and connection and all the ways these necessities manifest themselves.” \nThe original PhotoEspaña call for artists eloquently captured this timely theme: “Windows\, balconies function as we have seen throughout art history as a separator between the interior (and personal) space and the outside world. But also as a source of longing and freedom. Confinement and infinity. Immediacy and transience.” \n“Quarantine\, isolation\, and stay-at-home orders vary immensely depending of where home is\,” said Josefa González Mariscal\, Executive Director of the NHCC. “’Desde Mi Balcón/From My Balcony’ allows us to see how Spain\, where the population density is more than 10 times that of New Mexico\, experienced the COVID-19 confinement.” \n“Desde Mi Balcón/From My Balcony” was first on exhibit in the United States on the facade of the Spanish Embassy in Washington\, D.C. \nInaugurated this past October\, the Bosque Gallery makes use of 730 feet of fencing along the western border of the NHCC campus\, facing the Paseo del Bosque Trail\, to present exhibitions that rotate among the key program areas of the NHCC – History\, Literary Arts\, Visual Arts\, and Performing Arts – and include topics that support the Center’s mission to preserve\, promote\, and advance Hispanic culture\, arts\, and humanities.

SUMMARY:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era
DESCRIPTION:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era\, is an online exhibit of artwork created by Albuquerque High School students under the direction of four teachers. The work was created at the end of the spring semester\, after schools closed across New Mexico in response to the COVID-19 crisis. \n \nPrior to school closures and the closure of the NHCC campus\, the AHS students and teachers were scheduled to hang an exhibit in the Pete Domenici Education Building on the NHCC. The students were working on completely different projects at that time and what you see here reflects their transition into online art instruction and the students’ reflections on this dramatic and sudden shift. Many artworks were submitted for this online exhibit and what is presented here is just a small sampling of the creativity that has taken place since March.\, \nDuring this time\, the teachers focused intently on how to continue supporting their students through these new challenges. There were many emotions about how the school year ended so abruptly and about the continued need for social distancing. Yet\, something magical also happened. The students created so much artwork in their homes that it needed to be shared and shown to others. The artwork demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity that is inspiring. There was so much artwork\, that we were only able to show a portion of it. \nIMPORTANT message to all the students!  All of the art created\, whether shown here or not\, is amazing! Please\, don’t stop creating. You are teaching the rest of the world about resilience and resourcefulness. \nTo all the teachers\, thank you! You all have been challenged in many ways. Your dedication to your students is evident in the honesty of your statements and the varied projects shown. You have not only taught craftsmanship but life skills. Through the lengthy and complicated process of transitioning to an online exhibit\, it is evident that your capacity for care and hard work is unwavering. Again\, thank you. \nPlease click HERE and leave a comment for Teachers\, Artists or NHCC staff\, about this exhibit.

SUMMARY:The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Neighborhood Project: Las Voces de Barelas is a community art initiative by Working Classroom student artists under the instruction of guest teaching artist Adria Malcolm which set out to explore the people of the historic Barelas area through the mediums of environmental portraiture and feature-writing. The project aims to bridge the gap between otherness and commonality through the sharing of the most vital elements of an individual’s story. \nThe project artists learned how to conduct thorough interviews\, explored rapport building with subjects\, and learned the basics of journalistic feature writing and portraiture. Las Voces de Barelas serves as a way for Working Classroom to give back and explore the community that it calls home and present stories of a shared human experience.

SUMMARY:Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve
DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibit features approximately fifty works of art from the Joyce Kaser Collection. Southwest of Eden: The Art of Adam and Eve examines the various ways in which New Mexican artists and others visually portray these two famous figures as well as the flora and fauna in their surroundings.  For example\, how many apples are featured\, or are they pomegranates? Is the serpent male or female? Is it animal or human\, or half and half? Is Eve always the instigator or is Adam assuming some responsibility? Situated in the NHCC Art Museum’s highly popular community gallery\, Southwest of Eden invites the visitor to take a closer look at the imagery\, symbolism and story of what happened in the garden.

SUMMARY:Braceros Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features more than 30 black and white photographs of braceros taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo. It also uses narratives\, video and artifacts to tell the story of the Bracero Program. The program grew out of a series of bi-lateral agreements between Mexico and the United States\, bringing Mexican men to the United States as guest-workers on short-term\, primarily agricultural labor contracts. In 1942\, these workers came to remedy wartime production shortages by supplying much-needed labor during the early years of World War II.  The Bracero Program\, which derived its name from the Spanish word for a manual laborer\, “bracero” continued uninterrupted until 1964. During this extensive program\, 4.6 million contracts were signed\, with many individuals returning several times on different contracts\, making it the largest United States contract labor program. An examination of the exhibition images\, documents\, and artifacts contributes to our understanding of the lives of migrant workers in Mexico and the United States\, as well as our knowledge of immigration\, nationalism\, labor practices\, and race relations.\nThis exhibit is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:New Mexico Hometown Heroes: Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Hometown Heroes: Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients exhibit is a tribute to the six Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor recipients who have received the highest honor that the United States government bestows for acts of valor and heroism. It celebrates not only their stories of service but their connections to New Mexico: Private Joseph Martínez (WWII)\, Private José Valdez (WWII)\, Master Sergeant Alejandro Ruíz (WWII)\, Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Fernandez (Vietnam War)\, Chief Warrant Officer Louis Rocco (Vietnam War) Master Sergeant Leroy Petry (Operation Enduring Freedom). \nThis exhibition of photographs\, narratives\, and ephemera allows us to reflect on the sacrifices of those who served\, and those who follow in their footsteps. \nIt is on display in the NHCC History and Literary Arts building. You can find the hours for that building here.

SUMMARY:Because It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM
DESCRIPTION:Art Museum hours and prices HERE \nNow\, you can also purchase the catalog for this incredible exhibit. \nBecause It’s Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM examines race and identity in New Mexico and is a space for artistic expression that grapples with the complexities of who we are\, how we are understood\, and how that impacts the way we live (or don’t) in a variety of places.  The exhibition features approximately 26 newly created artworks by artists with different experiences in New Mexico alongside works from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum’s permanent collection. All of the artworks delve into  race and place through an intersectional lens alongside gender\, sexuality\, class\, nationality\, citizenship status\, etc. from local\, national\, and international perspectives. \nThis museum exhibition included much contemplation by the Visual Arts program staff and interns about what it might look like to create an exhibit that relinquished a bit of institutional control and placed it in the hands of the artists. Many of the works were not seen in their completed form until just weeks before the opening. The process continues to be a learning experience and the hope is to maintain an environment of openness and education\, for the staff and our visitors\, even after the exhibition closes. \nWe are so honored to work with this amazing group of artists. \nInvited artists include: Adelina Cruz\, Adriana Ortiz-Carmona\, Apolo Gomez Autumn Chacon\, Aziza Murray\, Baochi Zhang\, Brandee Caoba\, Corey Pickett\, Cynthia Cook\, Earl McBride\, Ehren Kee Natay\, Eliza Naranjo Morse\, Eric-Paul Riege\, Erin Currier\, Fatemeh Baigmoradi\, Grace Rosario Perkins\, Hamed Marwan\, Jami Porter Lara\, Jessica Chao\, Joanna Keane Lopez\, John Boyce\, Lucrecia Troncoso\, Monica Kennedy\, Nanibah Chacon\, Rose B. Simpson\, and Zahra Marwan. \nArtists from the permanent collection include: Ana Laura de la Garza\, Annie Lopez\, Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca (ASARO)\, Carlos Cortéz\, Consuelo Jiménez Underwood\, Delilah Montoya\, Eduardo Muñoz Bachs\, Eric J. Garcia\, Ester Hernández\, Jason Garcia\, Nicolás de Jesús\, Noni Olabisi\, Pamela Enriquez-Courts\, Rosana Paulino\, Rupert Garcia\, Scherezade Garcia\, Vincent Valdez\, Yreina D. Cervantez. \nArtwork credits: Clockwise from upper left: Corey Pickett\, Las Mujeres (1 of 3)\, 2018. Wood\, foam\, fabric\, repurposed purses.
