SUMMARY:Film: Harvest of Loneliness: The Bracero Program
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThis historical documentary\, shedding light on the current debate over immigration reform and the use of “guest workers” in American agriculture\, examines what was known as the Bracero Program—a system put in place from 1942 to 1964 to recruit Mexican farm laborers for temporary work in the United States. The film features testimony from surviving braceros as well as these workers’ family members and descendants\, along with commentary from featured experts and extensive archival material. Anna Uremovich\, archivist for the NHCC’s History and Literary Arts (HLA) program\, will introduce the film and give an overview of HLA’s ongoing Braceros exhibition\, featuring black-and-white photographs of these workers taken by the photojournalist collective known as the Hermanos Mayo\, together with narratives\, video\, and artifacts that tell the story of the Bracero Program. The film will be shown at 7 pm \nRaquel has worked as a live-in\, uniformed maid for a well-to-do family in Santiago\, Chile for over 20 years. Now 41\, she is part of the family in some ways\, as emotional attachments—both positive and negative—attest\, but in others remains apart\, even expendable. \nWhen her employers decide that she needs help and hire an additional maid\, Raquel feels that she must fight for her place in the household. Her “guerrilla war” against a series of newcomers reaches increasingly audacious heights\, until someone quite different turns up and Raquel’s world begins\, very gently\, to expand. La Nana\, described as a “microcosm of Latin social hierarchy\,” also focuses on one woman’s journey to free herself from a mental servitude of her own making. Between 5\,000 and 7\,000 Jews managed to reach the Spanish border fleeing Europe by crossing the Lleida Pyrenees to Spain. This valuable documentary honors the memory of those who fled from persecution and those who helped make that possible. \n \n8 pm – “Your wishes in heaven (Tu boca en los cielos)”. NM Premier. Rachey Muyal\, an 87-year-old descendant of Sephardim expelled from Spain in 1492 delivers a handwritten letter to the tombs of Catholic Monarchs at Granada in which she confesses to those responsible for the expulsion that the Jews do not have any resentment against them. The letter takes us on a delightful journey covering 500 years of coexistence enjoyed by the Jews in the lands of the Maghreb (Morocco\, Tunisia\, & Algeria). DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn Zoot Suit\, Luis Valdez weaves a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent\, racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles.  The trial followed the death of José Díaz\, found unconscious near the “Sleepy Lagoon” reservoir in 1942\, and resulted in the conviction\, despite insufficient evidence\, of several young Latinos charged with complicity in his murder. The fears and hostilities aroused by its coverage pitted servicemen stationed in Southern California\, along with white civilians\, against Mexican American and other minority youths. The white antagonists attacked and stripped teenagers and youths who wore zoot suits\, with their long jackets and pegged pants\, ostensibly because they considered the outfits\, which utilized a considerable amount of fabric\, unpatriotic during a time when rationing of fabric was required for the war effort.  Set in the barrios of Los Angeles\, the film features music by Daniel Valdez and Lalo Guerrero\, the “father of Chicano music.” El Pachuco\, an idealized Zoot Suiter\, serves as narrator as well as the conscience of Henry Reyna\, a character inspired by real-life defendant Hank Leyvas. The convictions obtained as a result of the murder trial were reversed on appeal in 1944.
