SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Azaletik azalera
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nWith this award-winning short film\, Mel Arranz has managed to place himself within the interesting panorama of animation made in the Basque Country. His piece\, colored in various shades of black and white\, began to take shape during his artistic stay in Mexico and is a visual experiment: his short film manages to demonstrate a bodily intimacy through the detail shots of the touching of skins\, hardly representable in live-action cinema. \nFree Community Event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. This year\, the program dedicated to highlighting the celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride Day comes from the Basque festival Zinegoak\, which celebrates its twenty years of existence with the presentation of an animated film series whose films address this theme on our Vimeo channel. Throughout four weeks\, we will see short films that showcase a wide range of identities and LGTBIQ+ collectives through the different techniques that animation provides\, and we will also have the opportunity to enjoy several short films by young creators from Basque Country. \nProgram\nJuly 4: Azaletik azalera (2021)\, by Mel Arranz\nJuly 7: La mesa\, (2018) by Adrian Garcia Gomez\nJuly 11: Beti Bezperako Koplak (2016)\, by varios cineastas\nJuly 14: Thara (2018)\, by Paco Ramírez y Tanya O’Carroll\nJuly 18: Dejarse crecer el cuerpo (2018)\, by Andrea Gudiño\nJuly 21: Ezohikoak (2022)\, by Alejandra Bueno\nJuly 25: Garelako (2015)\, by Usue Egia\nJuly 28: Makun (‘No llores’) (2015)\, by Emilio Martí

DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nWith a captivating work drawing on a black and white photographic image\, director Adrian Garcia Gomez delves into memory to orient his imagination regarding identity and the past in the environment of the western and Mexican cinema of the 1940’s and 50’s. This short film follows its predecessor Mikveh (2016)\, and shares that film’s sensitive attunement regarding its formality and concerns\, which the Californian creator will continue in his subsequent work\, using a much more complex visual composition. \nFree Community Event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Dejarse crecer el cuerpo
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nAs part of her thesis project\, filmmaker Andrea Gudiño proposed this animated documentary that brings us closer to the issue of sexual binarism. The possibility of using the experiences and personal testimonies of real people who do not appear in the image but are generated from an original use of materials and cinematographic techniques\, achieves an enormous visual and didactic impact\, one of the most effective resources in an animated documentary like this one. The short film is an interesting approach to different ways of conceiving identity\, the relationship with one’s own body and love. SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Ezohikoak
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nThrough a work with archival photographs\, the animator Alejandra Bueno creates a reinterpretation of the presence of women in Basque culture\, which combines the manipulation and intervention of these images with the oral enumeration of the functions traditionally attributed to women. The result is a provocative display of how to assume and reverse the elements of tradition and its representation to show its fissures and to open those meanings that are no longer viable or sustainable. In the process\, we will witness new representations of gender and sexual orientations that further dynamite the critical discourse. \nFree Community Event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. SUMMARY:Cervantes Film Series: Garelako
DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST (available for 48 hours)\nInstituto Cervantes Vimeo Channel Here \nCervantes Film Series: Zinegoak 20th anniversary. LGTBIQ+ Animation \nWith a song by Eneko Sagardoy as a thematic and narrative pillar\, the writer and animator Usue Egia proposes a journey through various characters and stories that illustrate a call for freedom to everyone to define themselves and feel as they wish. \nGarelako\, by Eneko Sagardoy: “The gray sky will not suffocate us. We will flee to the sun. They want to put straw hearts on us. Let us feel what we prefer. If the bird’s wings are for walking\, if the whale is denied the sea\, we will see nothing but fiction. If above all words is the lie\, we will go forward\, whether you like it or not. If someone is free\, it is because we are all free. We will truly live with you or without you. You will realize it sooner or later. We are not monsters; we do not eat anyone. The sun warms us\, and the rain wets us. Now you have realized: we are flesh and blood\, like you. Marichico or Marichica\, they call us. Stop talking banally. Learn one thing well and keep it in your head\, that the only Mari is the one of Anboto”. \nFree community event \n \nThe Cervantes Institute maintains its program dedicated to LGTBIQ+ identities by collaborating with institutions and monographic festivals to make their film series more visible. SUMMARY:Afro Mundo: Maestra
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm: Social Justice Film Screening\, Panel Discussion to immediately follow. \nIn 1961\, over 250\,000 Cubans joined their country’s National Literacy Campaign and taught more than 707\,000 other Cubans to read and write. Almost half of these volunteer teachers were under eighteen years old\, and more than half were women. \nFree Community Event \n \nNarrated by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker\, MAESTRA explores the experiences of nine of the women who\, as young girls\, helped eradicate Cuban illiteracy within one year. Interweaving interviews\, archival footage\, and campaign photos\, this lively documentary includes one of the first Cubans of her generation to call herself a feminist and one of the first openly proud members of Cuba’s LGBTQI community. With wit and spirit\, all recall negotiating for autonomy and independence in a culture still bound by patriarchal structures. MAESTRA highlights the will and courage that made the monumental endeavor possible and the pivotal role of women’s and youth empowerment in building a new society.

SUMMARY:Fright Night Film Screening: Dracula
DESCRIPTION:10:30 pm \nRenfield\, a solicitor\, makes a journey into Transylvania via stagecoach. He mentions his destination\, Castle Dracula\, to the locals who react with alarm. They tell him Drácula is a vampire and when he doesn’t believe them\, one insists he wear a cross. When he arrives at the Castle\, the Count bids him welcome. After drinking drugged wine\, Renfield collapses\, still wearing the cross\, and is bitten. Aboard ship\, a now-enslaved Renfield laughs maniacally below as Drácula picks off the crew one by one. When the ship reaches England\, he is the only living person found. \nFree Community Event \nDirectors: George Melford | Adult Horror | 1931 (USA) | Run time: 104 min. | Not Rated: NR | Studio: Universal Pictures \n \nDrácula meets Dr. Seward and his family at the opera. Lucía is completely fascinated by him and that night becomes his victim. Professor Van Helsing is called in\, and he recognizes the danger for what it is. He also realizes that Dr. Seward’s patient Renfield is somehow tied up in events. But soon after meeting the Doctor’s new neighbor\, Van Helsing figures out that Drácula is a vampire—based on the fact that Drácula casts no reflection in the mirror. By now\, Seward’s daughter Eva is falling under his spell. To her horror\, she feels increasingly weak and also increasingly wild—at one point attacking her fiancé Juan. With Seward’s and Harker’s help\, Van Helsing seeks to trap Drácula\, who outwits them and escapes with Eva by seizing control of a nurse’s mind. They follow Renfield into Carfax Abbey—an act which ends with Drácula killing his slave by strangulation\, and then tossing him from a tall staircase. Deep in the catacombs under Carfax\, they find Drácula asleep and Eva still alive. Van Helsing drives a stake through the vampire’s heart\, and as Eva and Harker leave\, Van Helsing prays over Renfield’s body.

SUMMARY:Film: Americonned Documentary: New Mexico Premier
DESCRIPTION:5:00 pm \nGolden Goose Kitchen presents Americonned. The super-rich determines virtually every aspect of the lives of the other 90% of Americans. This film examines the hidden struggles of American families\, the calculated political maneuvers of the elite\, and the long overdue uprising of American workers. With affection for the middle-class and the outrageous attempt to color them as lazy\, the film explores the question: How do we make sure workers are paid what they are worth\, instead of believing they are only worth what they are paid? \nThere will be a panel discussion following the screening. \n$25 w/ $5 discount for students and seniors \n*This event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images\, and description for the event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue. By serving as a venue and posting the event on its website\, the NHCC is not endorsing any views expressed in the title or description of the event\, nor is it endorsing the content of the event.
