SUMMARY:¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour: Valentines with Nick Abdalla
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nOn the first Thursday of the month\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center invites adults for artistic fun. Snacks and refreshments\, as well as beer and wine are for sale from Pop Fizz to fuel your creative juices. This month\, artist Nick Abdalla will guide a project inspired by love! Nick and his wife have been exchanging found-object sculptural Valentines for over 30 years and their creative expressions of amor will serve as inspiration for this month’s Happy Arte Hour. \nPlease pre-register using the link below (so we know how many materials to prepare)\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/yALP5QDJlO1F5oJx1 \nFor more information please call or email Elena Baca at 505-246-2261 or ElenaD.Baca@state.nm.us\nFree\, $5 donations are encouraged to support the artists & purchase supplies \n \nAbout Nick Abdalla and his work: \nNick collects objects such as beads\, twine\, cardboard and rattan furniture parts. With a little sculpting putty and paint\, he builds large scale creations that seem to take on a magical life of their own. Each sculpture taunts the imagination with agile forms that appear to be something different from every angle. Abdalla describes his process as one of feeling rather than thinking and notes the importance of listening to his work. \nNick’s Artist Statement: \n“’All who wander are not lost.’ ‘I’m not lost\, I’m just exploring.’ ‘Wherever you go\, there you are.’ As simplistic as these slogans seem\, they speak to my present approach to making things. The process has become important\, or perhaps\, the most important factor in my work. It is what I discover\, what I find\, what I feel that makes me do this. I begin by knowing nothing about what the piece will become.” \nYou can see Nick’s work in person at the NHCC Art Museum. \n

SUMMARY:¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour with Artist Rachel Muldez
This month\, artist Rachel Muldez will be guiding a project inspired by her work in the NHCC Art Museum exhibition\, Fantasía Fantástica: Imaginative Spaces and Other-Worldly Collage! \nPlease pre-register using the link below (so we know how many materials to prepare)\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/yALP5QDJlO1F5oJx1 \nFor more information please call or email Elena Baca at 505-246-2261 or ElenaD.Baca@state.nm.us\nFree\, $5 donations are encouraged to support the artists & purchase supplies \n \nAbout Rachel Muldez and her work: \nRachel describes her current work as “nature collage.” Muldez collects materials from the natural world and reframes them either within larger installation patterns that sprawl across a gallery floor or in much smaller compositions that seem as though they could be a little niche for some small creature. Muldez notes\, “The materials and objects that I make are always a visual reference to the larger ideas of existence as a continuum and the current expansion of our known universe.” \nArtist Statement: \n“The objects I collect end up in piles in my studio and await re-examination. It is not uncommon for me to observe and admire an object for years before I am aware of its full aesthetic potential. The sculptures that come out of this process resonate with evolving understanding of our world and the study of other worlds\, galaxies\, and nebulas.” \nYou can see Rachel’s work in the NHCC Art Museum.

SUMMARY:¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte!: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:2 pm to 4 pm \nJoin us for the opening reception of ¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte! which celebrates the NHCC Art Museum’s growing permanent collection with a revitalized vibe and a brand new selection of works. This exhibition was a collaborative project as the entire NHCC Visual Arts staff and interns combed through the collection and worked together to decide which pieces should welcome in 2017. This sampling explores the contributions of these artists and how each work can serve as a reminder of the heart that thrives in strong and resilient communities. \nThe collection contains over 2\,500 artworks by Hispanic\, Chicana/o\, and Latina/o\, artists from around the globe most of which have been generously donated to the museum by artists and collectors. It reflects the diversity of Latina/o art and expression in all of its vibrancy\, creativity\, pointed humor and social consciousness. The National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum exists to support and engage the work of these artists and share their creations and their stories with the broader community.\nFree community event
