SUMMARY:4th Annual South American Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nThe 4th Annual South American Folk Festival seeks to unite Albuquerque’s South American community in a day of cultural experience and connection through music\, dance\, and food. In addition to food vendors from participating countries\, the festival will feature traditional dancers from Colombia\, Peru\, Venezuela\, Chile\, Brazil\, Argentina\, and Ecuador. \nHighlights of the event include local band Baracutanga performing a traditional batucada and performances by Argentine Tango instructors Eva Garlez and Pablo Rodriguez\, Peruvian dance/choreographers Fiorella Vera Adrianzen and Yessenia Lentz\, and the Odara Dance Ensemble. The featured band will be Houston-based Bamuayā\, led by Venezuelan percussionist Reinaldo Araujo. A Latin fusion group with musicians from all over Latin America as well as the United States\, Bamuayā will be releasing their latest CD in Albuquerque. \nAnd\, proudly representing the Colombian culture\, this event will again welcome Raices Colombianas who\, for the past four years have delighted us with their traditional dances\, folkloric costumes\, and energetic choreographies. They will be presenting two songs\, both of which have folkloric rhythms with roots in the African cultures that integrated with the native Colombian culture.  These dances reflect the themes of courtship and slavery\, but\, at the same time\, tell the stories of ordinary activities like fishing and agriculture. The costumes have a Spanish influence.  Men’s costumes in general are white and in light materials with hats and scarves. The women use wide skirts called polleras.  In addition\, women wear big floral arrangements in their hair to complete the costume.  Instruments commonly heard in this music include drums\, flutes\, marimbas\, and maracas. \n$14 in advance\, $16 day of show w/ $2 discount for NHCC members; free for children age 12 and younger

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Changüi Majadero
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nPlus: Inside Songwriting workshop with Changüí Majadero at 3:00 pm. More information here.  \nPlaying Cuban roots music out of East Los Angeles\, Changüí Majadero is a blazing five-piece band that has honed a deeply informed and highly personal take on changüí\, a surging Afro-Cuban musical tradition that took shape in the late 19th century on the eastern side of the island around Guantanamo. It’s one of the foundational styles that gave birth to son\, salsa and timba\, and in the hands of Changüí Majadero the music feels as fresh and intoxicating as a stiff shot of rum. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Gabriel García\, an expert on Cuban tres guitar\, the band brings Cuba’s country blues to new ears. \n  \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. \nAdvance $13\, Day of Show $18 \n     Thank you to our Domingos en Arte media sponsor Telemundo 2 Kasa! \n \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities.
