This is a great opportunity for friends to hang out\, a unique date night option\, or a place to come solo and connect with fellow art enthusiasts. \nOn March 5\, Micaela Seidel will join us for a collage workshop! \n \nDuring this workshop\, you will enter a whirlwind of shape and color. You will play with positive and negative shapes to construct simple but amazing still life collages and surreal self-portraits. Micaela will introduce you to one of her favorite pastimes; the “glue-draw-glue” technique and we will go beyond ready-made collage papers and make some of our own.  Come away with new approaches as well as something intriguing to hang on the wall. \n“We are inundated with images. Find the ones that resonate with you and infuse them with new life by making them your own. Collage invites you to alter what you see\, rearrange it\, add to it. Your creations are your children. Dress them up\, love them.” –Micaela Seidel on her art-making process. \nOptional supplies to bring with you:  Images that you have collected that you don’t mind cutting\, gluing or drawing on. Scissors and or knives that make cutting easier for you. Collage/art supplies that you wish to use or share.  We will have watercolor paper\, collage materials\, drawing materials\, paint\, and glue. \nPlease pre-register HERE (so we know how many materials to prepare). SUMMARY:27th Annual César Chávez Day Fiesta
DESCRIPTION:All events at the NHCC through April 9\, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed.\nPlease call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. \nMarch—10:30 am\nFiesta—12 noon-3 pm \nJoin us in honoring the life and legacy of César Chávez at the 27th annual César Chávez Day Fiesta\, with a march—La Marcha de Justicia– beginning at 10:30 am at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ending at noon on the Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march\, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry\, dancing\, community exhibits\, children’s activities and games\, food\, and live music by Ivón Ulibarrí’s Café Mocha and the All Star Band. This event also honors the 2020 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! Awardees—people who have served our community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nFree public event \n \nWe are proud once again to welcome Dolores Huerta\, celebrating her 90th birthday this year\, to deliver our keynote speech. A native of Dawson\, NM\, Huerta was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, she was recognized for her decades of ceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. This year’s César Chávez Day festivities will include the dedication of Avenida Dolores Huerta\, a portion of Albuquerque’s Bridge Boulevard that has been renamed in her honor. Avenida Dolores Huerta\, running from the city/county boundary at the Rio Grande to the east and Isleta Boulevard to the west\, will connect to Avenida César Chávez\, making it the nation’s first intersection of streets bearing the names of these two civil rights leaders who worked side-by-side for so many years.

The festival combines workshops\, lectures\, panel discussions\, storytelling performances\, and musical performances connected to the oral tradition and storytelling. It was created with two essential purposes: the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling and the establishment of a collaborative relationship among artists from New Mexico\, other parts of the United States\, Spain\, and Latin America to create new works together and contribute to the advancement of the genre. \n \nNew Mexico\, where Native American cultures\, Latin American oral tradition\, and cultural traditions such as flamenco converge\, is an ideal place for a festival focused on the oral tradition\, and Instituto Cervantes is positioned to encourage this union of cultures and promote an exchange between artists of diverse origins. Over three days\, Festival Oralidad offers academic and theoretical debate\, shares the secrets of storytellers with children\, and brings together some of the most significant musicians and storytellers in the U.S. While travel restrictions this year have limited participation to artists residing in-country\, future festivals will include colleagues from Latin America and Spain. \nAuthor\, storyteller and teacher Michelle Adam’s interactive recital is especially designed for children from six to twelve years old\, to explore the power of stories and develop their creativity and taste for storytelling. Adam’s published works include the novel Niña Duende\, set in Málaga\, Spain\, and the bilingual children’s story “Adventures with Duende in the Ocean\,” about a goblin who leads a child to the ocean. \nEmmy Tither\, an educator and researcher raised in Lima\, Peru and Washington\, DC\, is the K-12 Educational Program Coordinator for the University of New Mexico’s Latin American and Iberian Institute. \nBorn in Montevideo\, Uruguay\, educator Matilde Machiavello was trained in English language instruction and neurolinguistic programming in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. She is also a team coach\, Brain Gym 101 facilitator\, and storyteller\, with more than 20 years of experience working with individuals and teams to enhance talent and creativity. As a storyteller\, she believes in the “magical power of stories” in shaping a new and ideal reality\, and enjoys sharing stories in both Spanish and English and combining the different strategies in which she has been trained. \nSantiago Vaquera-Vásquez is a Chicano storyteller\, academic\, and former associate professor at the University of New Mexico. He has taught classes on Mexican American border culture\, Chicano culture\, and creative writing\, in colleges in the U.S.\, Latin America\, and Europe. His books include Algún día te cuento las cosas\, Luego el silencio\, En el Lost ‘n’ Found\, and his most recent work\, Nocturno de Frontera; his stories have been published in anthologies and literary magazines in Spain\, Italy\, Mexico\, and the United States. \nGrammy-nominated singer-songwriter Perla Batalla earns critical acclaim for her distinctive voice\, emotional honesty\, and culture-merging compositions. She was born in Los Angeles to a family immersed in music. Her dad\, a Mexican mariachi and D.J.\, and her Argentine mom ran the family record shop\, Discoteca Batalla\, where Perla was exposed to an education of non-stop music that cut across genres and languages. \nAfter singing with and recording with numerous groups and artists\, including Leonard Cohen\, Perla launched her solo career with Cohen’s encouragement. Since then\, she has recorded seven albums\, been featured in film and on television\, staged two one-woman shows\, and performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues. \nHer original Frida Kahlo musical was chosen by the Ojai Playwrights Festival and subsequently produced at the San Diego Repertory Theater to critical praise. Perla’s personal homage to her mentor\, Cohen\, continues to play to sold-out audiences throughout Europe and North America. \nPerla’s mission of exposing youth to the beauty of music and the Spanish language is ongoing in her outreach to some of the poorest communities in the U.S. She has been honored with two U.N. awards: the Earth Charter Award for extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice and he Environmental Peacebuilding Award\, for advancing social justice through music. She is also the recipient of New Mexico’s Premio Fronterizo Award for healing work in the world. \nThis concert will require either a proof of vaccination completed at least 14 days prior to the event or a negative COVID test administered by a health care professional within 72 hours of the event.
