Light hors d’oeuvres and one drink will be included Cash Bar Available. \nCecilia López\, a talented Mexican-American opera soprano known as “The Daughter of Idaho\,” was born in Rupert\, Idaho but currently lives in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. Ms. López’s musical career began when she was a little child and began singing mariachi songs that her mother had taught her. She received the coveted Idaho State Concurrent Resolution honoring her life as an Idahoan and her achievements in the operatic world. \n$75.00 for Non-members\, $50.00 for NHCC Foundation Members \n \nIn addition to being named one of opera’s “25 Rising Stars” by Opera News\, she has been designated one of “Idaho’s Top 10 Most Influential Women of the Century” by USA Today. Her “alluring voice and incredible range” (Washington Post) are frequently praised for the singing actress. \nMs. López has displayed remarkable perseverance and adaptation in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic’s hurdles. She has taken part in virtual and live recitals with prominent opera companies during the 2020–2021 season\, including Opera Idaho\, Opera Las Vegas\, Austin Opera\, Opera Southwest\, Chatter ABQ\, and Madison Opera. Notably\, she performed with the Pacific Symphony for the first time\, mesmerizing audiences as Violetta in their 90-minute La traviata rendition.\n​\nMs. López was named Opera Idaho’s first Artistic Advisor in January 2021. DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation is hosting a Tequila Tasting Event on June 29th\, 2023 at 6:00 pm at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Torreón. This includes tastings of five different tequilas\, led by Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits Director of Mixology Michael Trujillo and a five-course food pairing by Chef Marcus Montoya. The funds raised from this event will be used to support the presentation of the Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition at the NHCC Art Museum. \n$150 \n \nThe Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape\, culture\, and traditions that gave birth to tequila\, Mexico’s national drink. In this series\, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that founded the industry\, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle. Objects and paintings related to the theme of agave will be on display from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum Permanent Collection as well as loans from various institutions and artist Hailey Marmolejo.

SUMMARY:Hispanic Culture Day
DESCRIPTION:10 am \nHispanic Culture Day\, co-hosted by Senator Peter Wirth and the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) Foundation\, will begin with a joint session of the New Mexico State Senate and the New Mexico House of Representatives in the House Chambers. It will be followed by a ticketed luncheon at Hotel Eldorado honoring Rep. Monica Youngblood and Sen. Jacob R. Candelaria for their tremendous advocacy for and in support of Hispanic cultures and communities. \nThe keynote speaker for the Hispanic Culture Day Joint Session is Dr. Arturo Madrid\, the T. Frank and Norine R. Murchison Distinguished Professor of the Humanities\, Emeritus at Trinity University. Dr. Madrid will give a talk titled\, “No llegamos ayer: art\, culture\, and memory in New Mexico.” The event also will include Afro-Latino music and dance by Frank Leto and his musical group PANdemonium and Pilar Leto and her dance group Odara Dance Ensemble. \nThe luncheon is presented by Molina Healthcare and the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation\, and will include remarks from Sen. Wirth\, Rep. Youngblood and Sen. Candelaria\, as well as the NHCC’s Executive Director Rebecca Avitia and NHCC Foundation’s Director Anna Sanchez.  The luncheon will also include entertainment from Ehactl Aztec Dancers and musical group Luz de Luna. \nDr. Madrid is a native of New Mexico and a graduate of the University of New Mexico (1960)\, and a professor emeritus with Trinity University. In addition to serving as the founding president of the Tomás Rivera Center\, the nation’s first institute for policy studies on Latino issues\, Dr. Madrid has also held academic and administrative appointments at Dartmouth College\, The University of California\, San Diego\, and the University of Minnesota and has served as Director of the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) and the Minority Institutions Science Improvement Program (MISIP) in the U.S. Department of Education and National Director of the Ford Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship Program for Mexican Americans\, Native Americans and Puerto Ricans. \nFor more information on luncheon tickets or sponsorship\, contact Anna Sanchez at asanchez@nhccfoundation.org or 505-383-4782.
