SUMMARY:Camina el Autor: The Iconography of Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala\, Peruvian/Quechuan Chronicler
DESCRIPTION:Camina el Autor showcases the extraordinary work of Guaman Poma; explores the history of the indigenous people of Peru\, Andean civilization\, and Spanish conquest; and broadens our understanding of Peruvian culture and history.The digital images and accompanying texts have been provided to the NHCC by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, with assistance from the Consulate General of Peru in Denver. The NHCC has curated these (398 fullpage drawings) to present a vibrant and informative exhibit that encourages learning\, discovery\, and contemplation. SUMMARY:Breathe\, Barelas\, Breathe: A Staged Reading of a Trilogy of One-Act Plays
DESCRIPTION:7 pm\nOrpheum Arts Space\n500 2nd St\, SW\, Albuquerque\, NM 87102 \nThis will be a staged reading of the entire trilogy (90 minutes). Arrive early to see a photo exhibit about Barelas. Followed by refreshments. \nThis trilogy of one-act plays is written by Barelas resident playwrights Raúl Garza\, Leonard Madrid and Mónica Sánchez\, and inspired by the history\, dreams and musings of one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. This trilogy has been developed with the support of Artful Life’s El Puente/Barelas project and in partnership with the NHCC and Homewise. \nTwo additional readings of the plays are below: \nPAST\nSunday\, July 28\, 6 pm at B. Ruppe Drugstore parking lot\n807 4th St SW\, Albuquerque\, NM 87102\nFree food and drink followed by a reading of excerpts from the trilogy. \nWednesday\, July 31\, 7 pm at the NHCC Wells Fargo Auditorium\n1701 4th St\, SW\, Albuquerque\, NM 87102\nStaged reading of the entire trilogy (90 minutes) followed by refreshments. \nThe playwrights:  \nRaúl Garza is a Barelas-inspired playwright who tells stories that resound with culture\, identify\, and sense of place. His full-length play\, Fantasmaville\, received the National Latino Playwriting Award. When not writing\, Raúl explores kundalini yoga\, devours pop culture\, and travel beyond his means. www.theraulito.com. \nLeonard Madrid works as a designer\, actor\, playwright\, and educator in Albuquerque. His plays\, Tecolotito\, Perla\, and Aurora\, have received a Kennedy Center’s Award for Latino Playwrights. Once a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, fun art and movement activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, cultural exchange\, and live entertainment.  Join us for free samples of local produce and special recipes.
