DESCRIPTION:6 pm (MTS) \nLive via Zoom \n10 registered writers reading from our Querenica Writing Workshop will be working through out January 2020 creating poetry\, fiction and nonfiction inspired by the theme of “querencia” and the anthology\, Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland\, edited by Levi Romero\, Vanessa Fonseca-Chavez and Spencer Herrera (UNM Press 2020). The workshop will culminate in a public reading on February 20\, 2021. \nFree event with registration \n \nNew Mexico cultural envoy Juan Estevan Arellano\, to whom this work is dedicated\, writes that querencia “is that which gives us a sense of place\, that which anchors us to the land\, that which makes us a unique people\, for it implies a deeply rooted knowledge of place\, and for that reason we respect it as our home.” \nThis sentiment is echoed in the foreword by Rudolfo Anaya\, in which he writes that “querencia is love of home\, love of place.” This collection of both deeply personal reflections and carefully researched studies explores the New Mexico homeland through the experiences and perspectives of Chicanx and indigenous/Genízaro writers and scholars from across the state. The importance of querencia for each contributor is apparent in their work and their ongoing studies\, which have roots in the culture\, history\, literature\, and popular media of New Mexico. Be inspired and enlightened by these essays and discover the history and belonging that is querencia.

SUMMARY:Tertulia Histórica Albuquerque: Where Blood was Spilled: The U.S.—Mexican War of 1846
DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom \nRegister in advance HERE \nThe war between the U.S.A. and Mexico in 1846 was a world event that shaped the destiny of both nations. New Mexico was impacted directly\, as it went from being part of the new nation of Mexico to being a U.S. territory\, and ultimately\, a U.S. state. In this presentation\, State Historian Rob Martinez will discuss the causes of the conflict and examine the fallout from those events\, as well as the impact on New Mexico history specifically. \nFree\, Registration Required \n \nState Historian Rob Martínez is a native New Mexican from Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on New Mexico history. Rob was a research assistant at the Vargas Project\, learning research skills and paleography\, abilities that would serve him well as a historian. Before becoming state historian in 2019\, he was deputy state historian for six years at the New Mexico State Records Center and Archives. \nAlbuquerque is presented by the National Hispanic Cultural Center in collaboration with the Office of the New Mexico State Historian.
