SUMMARY:Reflexiones y Realidades: Artist Reflections & Dialogue on the Border
DESCRIPTION:7:00 – 8:30 pm \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \nJoin us for the Albuquerque premiere of Savior\, a short film directed\, edited\, and filmed in Albuquerque by filmmaker Ray Santisteban. The film features Albuquerque poet Marcial Delgado\, who has been invited to create a dialogue between the community of poets in Albuquerque writing on immigration and Dr. Laura Belmonte\, an Associate Professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at UNM and author of the book Borderland Brutalities: Violence in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands in Literature\, Culture\, and Art. \nFilm Screening\, Poetry\, and Conversations featuring Ray Santisteban\, Marcial Delgado\, Laura E. Belmonte\, Levi Romero\, Demetria Martinez\, Kristin Patton\, Savannah Rodriguez\, Scarlett Cortez\, Zahra Marwan\, Maragret Randall\, & Michelle Otero. \nFree community event. \n \nThis event will create a space for poets and filmmakers to discuss their artistic practices\, exploring how these mediums can raise awareness about social issues affecting our Hispanic community in Albuquerque and what this means for a sanctuary city. Given the current political climate and the looming presidential policies for the next four years\, there are significant concerns regarding immigration policy and reform\, which must take priority as the future of undocumented individuals in our communities hangs in the balance. By facilitating these discussions and embracing freedom of expression\, we aim to cultivate an environment where people can confront the realities of undocumented individuals and their humanity as they face threats. \nScreening: Savior | Director: Ray Santisteban | Writer: Marciel Delgado | Producer: Ray Santisteban | Talent: Marciel Delgado | Year Released: 2024 | Country: USA | Length: 1:23

SUMMARY:NHCC Book Club (Postponed)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has been postponed at the request of the author. A new date and time will be announced soon. We apologize for any inconvenience. \nThe NHCC invites lovers of literature\, folks who love to read\, and those who enjoy talking about the history and vast the array of identities that contribute to Latinidad/Hispanidad to join us! We will meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the Center’s HLA Conference Room. \nThis month\, we will be reading Nuclear Nuevo México: Colonialism and the Effects of the Nuclear Industrial Complex on Nuevomexicanos by Myrriah Gomez. This book tells the story of the Manhattan Project\, and its displacement of Nuevomexicanas/os and Tewa people. Contrary to previous works that suppress Nuevomexicana/o presence throughout U.S. nuclear history\, Nuclear Nuevo México focuses on recovering the voices and stories that have been lost or ignored in the telling of this history. There will be a Q&A with the author after a brief book talk. \nFree community event. Please let us know who will be attending by registering below.

SUMMARY:The Atrisco Companies: Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque
DESCRIPTION:On view in the History & Literary Arts Building \nThe Atrisco Companies is a family of social enterprises comprising seven nonprofit and community-focused organizations. The organization’s mission is to make exceptional community services accessible to New Mexicans\, empowering them to pursue richer and more meaningful experiences for their families. Among these organizations is Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, one of the seven nonprofits overseen by Atrisco Companies.  \nFor over 30 years\, Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque has been a premier conference and concert series in the country. Music enthusiasts and tourists alike consider Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque a “must-visit” destination\, standing out among peer programs in cities like San Antonio\, Tucson\, Los Angeles\, and Chicago.  \nThe success of Mariachi Spectacular has been hard-earned through decades of dedication. The organization continuously strives to enhance its program with unique elements that set it apart from the competition. One such innovation\, introduced over 20 years ago\, is the Mariachi Hall of Fame—a brilliant addition that has made us the proud hosts of the only Hall of Fame dedicated to the mariachi genre in the world. Right here in Albuquerque.  \nOver the past three decades\, Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque has inducted more than 30 mariachi musicians\, arrangers\, and contributors into our International Mariachi Hall of Fame. Each inductee is honored with a portrait\, celebrating their significant contributions to the mariachi tradition. We are honored to have in our Hall of Fame Mariachi trailblazers such as José “Pepe” Martinez\, Miguel Martinez\, and Rebecca Gonzales\, the first female Mariachi to in history to join a prestigious Mariachi show group\, Los Camperos.    \nMariachi Spectacular’s vision is to one day establish a permanent space where these Hall of Fame portraits can be displayed\, allowing us to share the rich history of these mariachi icons with our community\, nation\, and thus the world.  \nMariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque is deeply grateful for the partnership and support of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in displaying these portraits\, helping us bring the story of mariachi to life for all to see.
