DESCRIPTION:5 pm to 7 pm \nDía de Muertos is an annual traditional holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and many Hispanic communities. Join the NHCC and experienced\, knowledgeable local artists to learn about the meaning of this celebration\, the traditional arts and crafts associated with the celebration and development of ofrendas that honor families and individuals. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center will hold its annual Despedida to celebrate Día de los Muertos with music\, poetry and hands-on art making at this time-honored community gathering. This is a great event for all ages. DESCRIPTION:12:15 pm—Pre-concert lecture\n 1 pm—Concert \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before performance\nNew Mexico folk traditions\, old and new\, take center stage during an afternoon of captivating music as the University of New Mexico’s Robb Musical Trust and the National Hispanic Cultural Center present their annual celebration of traditional Nuevo Mexicano music\, ¡Música del Corazón! \nOn the wings of melody\, rhythm\, and poetry\, ¡Música del Corazón! concerts\, featuring new groups and different traditions each year\, tell us as much about our past as about our future. The concerts honor the contributions of John Donald Robb\, Sr.\, former dean of UNM’s College of Fine Arts and a recognized music pioneer\, and are dedicated in memory of his son\, John Donald Robb\, Jr.\, a driving force in the development of the Robb Musical Trust. The 2017 concert is also dedicated to Priscilla Robb McDonnell\, sister of John D. Robb\, Jr. It is preceded by an informative pre-concert lecture by concert curator Enrique Lamadrid. \nThis year’s concert commemorates Nuevo Mexicano roots in the musical contexts of Mexico and Spain\, in keeping with the vision of the Robb Musical Trust. SUMMARY:¡Salud y Sabor! Mundo Latino: Chef Showdown
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm to 7:30 pm \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC\, is a free evening of food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nDon’t miss this special Salud y Sabor where three local chefs will face off in a skills test that will leave only one winner. Chef Marie Yniguez of Bocadillos\, Chef Tony Saccoccia of Indigo Crow and Chef Daniel Camera from Poki Poki Cevicheria will be judged by Chef Marc Quiñones. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes\, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners\, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nBorn in Santiago in 1985\, the grandson of Jewish refugees fleeing persecution in Europe\, Nano Stern represents a new generation inspired by the nueva canción movement. A guitar virtuoso with a powerful singing voice\, he combines traditional Chilean\, Latin American\, and European folk music with jazz improvisation and rock influence\, as well as his early classical training and the inspiration of musical icons such as Violeta Parra and Inti-Illimani. Outspoken and passionate as well as experimental\, Stern delivers powerful universal messages with a deep sense of social justice. With numerous international festival appearances and ten albums to his credit\, he has a devoted following stretching through Latin America and into Europe and Australia. \nOf the Chilean musical activists like Inti-Illimani who continued to lead the nueva canción movement during the years of the Pinochet dictatorship\, Stern says\, “I am extremely respectful of the tradition.
