SUMMARY:Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company: Xicano Power
DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm Friday\, 4:00 pm Saturday \nNational Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez\, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. The current concert season marks the performance’s first appearance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \n$48\, $58\, $68\, $78 & $88 w/ a $5 discount for Seniors\, Students w/ Id\, Children 12 yeas old and younger and NHCC Members \n \nThis powerful display of flamenco is framed around the poet Rudolfo “Corky” González’s seminal poem “Yo Soy Joaquín.” González wrote the poem in 1967 to express the struggle of a people and the need for a Chicano movement. Here\, the poem appears to express shared identities and deepen the company’s and audiences’ interpretation of these repertory pieces. In 2004\, just five years after Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company’s inception\, Israel Galván choreographed Xicano Power on the company. \nIn titling the work\, Galván chose a name representative of the people performing. By doing so\, Galván acknowledged the importance of the people doing the art. We have chosen Xicano Power for the title of this performance\, focusing again on the interpreters and the power that shapes who they are. Chicano identity and culture permeate the land and space that this company comes from. The choreographies presented in Xicano Power showcase flamenco’s incredible expressive range: explosive\, elegant\, raw\, delightful\, complex\, beautiful; each piece as unique as its creator. \nFor more information about our friends at the National Institute of Flamenco\, please\, click Here. \nXicano Power – Yjastros group (Photo credit: Rafael Manjavacas)

Música del Corazón explores foundational genres of the romancero and cancionero\, from Medieval ballads to Revolutionary corridos\, Baroque and contemporary fandangos. We remember the hybrid music of Indo-Hispano rituals and that of Sephardic\, Moorish\, and Christian spiritualities. We revel with the beloved musical “stepchildren” of New Mexico – Flamenco\, Mariachi\, Jarocho\, and Afro-Caribeño. We honor musical families and revivals facilitated by teachers and scholars and have invited musical groups of every size. It will be hard to sit still as we indulge ourselves\, as we stand up for dance\, the embodiment of music in all its forms. \nPresented by University of New Mexico John Donald Robb Musical Trust and National Hispanic Cultural Center \nPoster art: “La Fiesta de la Abundancia del Brillante” by Jim Vogel ©2023 used with permission of the artist \nThe UNM John Donald Robb Musical Trust supports the music and musical legacy of John Donald Robb\, furthers his inspiring commitment to education and advances the understanding of the music of the Southwest. \nrobbtrust.org • facebook.com/UNMRobbMusicalTrust • unmrobbtrust@unm.edu \n\nEmpty seats and tickets not picked up by 2:40 pm will be released to people waiting to attend. The stories of each of our honorees are testimonies to lives well lived and generosity of spirit. Their artistry and innovations continue to inspire and provide direction for so many. In that spirit\, the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame and the producers of have joined to present this event that benefits the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame Awards and the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame Museum. \nPerformances by Michael Anthony\, Doug Lawrence\, Chuscales and Sally Townes. \nCongratulations to the 2023 inductees: Eva Torrez\, Michael Anthony\, Doug Lawrence\, Jak Bailey\,\nJohn Denver\, Chuscales\, and Michael Brasher.
