SUMMARY:Virtual Día de los Muertos Concert: Las Flores del Valle of Albuquerque
DESCRIPTION:7 pm\nMuseum of International Folk Art Facebook page HERE \nEvery year the NHCC holds its annual Despedida (Farewell) to celebrate Día de los Muertos with music\, poetry\, and hands-on art at this time-honored community gathering. Unfortunately\, with the current health restrictions\, this year’s Despedida is another wonderful in-person event that has been canceled. We are going to miss our ofrendas around the NHCC campus\, as well as the music\, poetry\, traditional hot chocolate mexicano\, pan de muerto\, and the opportunity to share our heartfelt memories with you\, our familia. \nBut we can still celebrate\, and we hope you will join our friends at the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) for a virtual Día de los Muertos concert featuring our friends Carol and Leila—Las Flores del Valle of Albuquerque. \nFree community event \n \nCarol Vigil and Leila Flores-Dueñas comprise a New Mexico women’s dueto\, whose smooth harmonies are reminiscent of the many hermanas duos that became famous during the 1960s. These groups helped form the lasting harmony structures of today’s U.S./Mexico Borderlands music scene. Accompanied by multi-talented musician and cultural anthropologist David F. Garcia\, Las Flores del Valle aim to preserve and share the nuances of the many musical genres that are representative of their family histories. \nLas Flores del Valle have shared their talents at venues such as the Gene Autry Theater in Los Angeles and Universidad Pedadógica Nacional in México City\, as well as the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This has allowed them to showcase their forte of preserving cultural traditions and Southwest history through the arts. They are also known for their presentations on life along the U.S./Mexico border\, covering topics such as the role of corridos (stories told in song) in Mexican and Southwestern music\, soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution\, Día de los Muertos\, and women’s roles in Borderland music.

SUMMARY:Virtual: Inside Yjastros
DESCRIPTION:8 pm (MTS)\nVirtual performance with a digital viewing pass.\nGet pass HERE\nLink and password will be sent to you one hour before the premiere\, providing 48 hours of access. \nIn 1999\, Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company set forth on an artistic journey that would become America’s most distinctive flamenco project. With that in mind\, Yjastros Artistic Director Joaquin Encinias teamed up with Incredible Films to create Inside Yjastros\, a unique streaming project that blends the power and beauty of performance by Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company with documentary footage from the company’s 20th year. \nViewing passes are on sale October 16\, 2020 at 12 pm (MTS) \nStay tuned to the NIF website HERE\, and social media for more details!

SUMMARY:¡Música del Corazón!—Mariachis y Flamencos: New Mexico's Beloved Stepchildren
DESCRIPTION:3 pm \nFree community event on the NHCC YouTube Channel HERE \nOn the wings of melody\, rhythm\, and poetry\, ¡Música del Corazón! concerts\, featuring new groups and different traditions each year\, tell us as much about our past as about our future. The concerts honor the contributions of John Donald Robb\, Sr.\, former dean of UNM’s College of Fine Arts and a recognized music pioneer\, and are dedicated in memory of his son\, John Donald Robb\, Jr.\, a driving force in the development of the UNM John Donald Robb Musical Trust. \nThe seventh annual John D. Robb\, Jr. concert will be an online virtual presentation featuring Frank McCulloch\, solo voice and guitar; La Mariachi\, with Lorenzo Martínez\, Larry Martínez\, Miguel Ojeda\, Joseph Santiago\, and José Carrillo; and Flamenco artists Vicente Griego\, Eloy Gonzales\, and Javier Saume Mazzei. \n \nThere will also be a panel discussion led by UNM Distinguished Professor Emeritus Enrique Lamadrid with Marisol Encinias\, Executive Director of the National Institute of Flamenco\, and New Mexico State Historian Rob Martínez. \nEnjoy New Mexico’s talent presenting Mariachi and Flamenco with a Nuevomexicano twist\, and learn about how these forms have developed to become part of our rich and ever-growing cultural heritage. \nBy most historical accounts\, Mariachi and Flamenco first took root in the fertile musical landscape of New Mexico by the mid-twentieth century. Their intertwined music and dance have inspired the people and resonated deeply with us. What is it about Mariachis that inspires cultural pride and respect? Why do we identify with the defiance and cultural resilience of the Gitanos—the Spanish gypsies? After four generations\, both traditions have fully naturalized here. At this point\, we cannot imagine New Mexico without them. Mariachi has expanded beyond the regions of Jalisco and Michoacán to become a national treasure. The same is true of Flamenco as it spread from Andalucía to the north\, and then to the world as a symbol of Spain. ¡Que vivan!

SUMMARY:Virtual Screening & Discussion: Con Alma
DESCRIPTION:7 pm (MST)\nThis event can be viewed AMP Concerts website HERE \nCon Alma: Exploring the Creative Process with Paola Prestini & Magos Herrera \nScreening of videos from the Con Alma project\, including a world premiere video\, La Creación de las Aves (The Creation of the Birds)\, followed by a live on-line discussion and open Q&A session with Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera\, moderated by Cristina Baccin from KUNM’s Raices program. The discussion will be hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center via Zoom\, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque and UNM’s Latin America and Iberian Institute. Prestini and Herrera will discuss the creative process\, the social engagement\, and the creation of the virtual event. \nDonations will be accepted on the AMP Concerts webpage \n \nCon Alma is an album and live digital experience of original works by composer Paola Prestini and vocalist and composer Magos Herrera\, along with some classics from the Mexican and jazz songbook\, created and recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic\, that explores the question of how we can find communion in a time of isolation. The album grew out of the personal and collective experience of this moment of deep division—be it spiritual\, ideological\, political or geographical—and seeks to use music to create a shared sense of the experiences that we are all going through together\, alone. \n“Con Alma is a sonic painting representing a 15-year friendship through a collaborative process of writing\, telling the story of shared ambitions and triumphs\, love\, trials\, hope\, and losses\,” Herrera and Prestini wrote in a joint statement about the project. “The artists we worked with form our international musical family\, and it’s a joy to be able to connect through this album\, leaving an artifact of this time\, and our response to the pandemic: alone\, but together.” \nBorn in Mexico City and now based out of New York City\, Magos Herrera presented a concert\, blending classical jazz styling with Latin melodies\, at the NHCC in 2012 as part of the Center’s signature Latin Diva Series. \nAdditional information on this project is available at https://www.conalmaproject.com. DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom with suggested donation. Click here to donate. You may also email marmijo@nhccfoundation.org to register for any of these events. We will send you the link to the performance. \nNicolás Valdez will present an hour-long workshop and discussion live from his home\, revolving around specific themes drawn from pre-recorded interviews and historical documentary footage that he has compiled. This workshop will explore the complexity of conjunto music’s origins and evolution and its long-term impacts on the Mexican-American community\, delving into topics including conjunto’s campesino origins\, its stylistic evolutions\, women and the recording industry\, and pachucos and the nightlife\, and including ethnographic interviews with prominent figures in the conjunto music scene. The crux of the conversation will be the way in which the evolution of conjunto music parallels that of the Mexican-American identity. \n \n“The focus of this work\, for me\, has always been to highlight the many contributions of the Mexican-American community to the cultural fabric of this country\,” says Valdez\, “and to show audiences how conjunto music\, an original and uniquely American form of musical expression\, became the soundtrack for the 20th century Mexican-American working-class experience.” \nIn Conjunto Blues\, playwright\, actor\, and musician Nicolás Valdez explores the social and historical conditions that led to the development of conjunto music as an expression of cultural resistance and liberation. SUMMARY:AARP Brain Health Webinar: Conjunto Blues
DESCRIPTION:2 pm (MST) \nLive via Zoom with suggested donation. Click here to donate. You may also email marmijo@nhccfoundation.org to register for any of these events. We will send you the link to the performance. \nConjunto Blues\, performance sponsor\, AARP will offer a live webinar on brain health and the arts\, including the intrinsic connection between music and memory\, the lasting effects of music on the brain\, and tools to assist in boosting brain health and wellness. \n \nIn Conjunto Blues\, playwright\, actor\, and musician Nicolás Valdez explores the social and historical conditions that led to the development of conjunto music as an expression of cultural resistance and liberation. Centering on Valdez’ personal experience growing up in the conjunto music scene\, the work is loosely based on his relationship with his grandfather\, also an aficionado of the music. Audiences are taken through a shifting landscape of memory and reflection that is highlighted throughout by traditional music performed live by Valdez and accompanied by musicians Luis Gonzalez on bajo sexto (12-string Mexican guitar)\, Sarah Rocha on tololoche (upright bass)\, and Joaquin Abrego on batería (drums). With a cast of colorfully poignant characters\, Conjunto Blues is a deeply personal performance for viewers of all ages and backgrounds\, and one that is sure to entertain as well as educate. \nThe world premiere of Conjunto Blues took place in Denver in 2013 with the support of Su Teatro\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the National Performance Network.  The work has also been performed at venues including Tucson’s Fox Theater and San Antonio’s Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC)\, and as part of the Los Angeles Theater Company’s Encuentro de las Américas. Conjunto Blues was adapted for online viewing in November of 2020 through collaborations with the GCAC and Teatro Vivo of Austin\, Texas. \nThis performance\, the Albuquerque premiere of Valdez’ critically acclaimed work\, is made possible through the generous sponsorship of AARP.  Access to the artist’s live workshop on May 1 and to an AARP webinar on May 2\, both described below\, is free to members of the NHCC Foundation and AARP members\, as well as to donors contributing $50 or more.

SUMMARY:Emporium & JAW Present Tommy Emmanuel
DESCRIPTION:8 pm (doors open at 7 pm) \n$43\, no discounts \n“Songs are our teachers. They show us the depth of the human race and its unrelenting desire to create.”—Tommy Emmanuel \nAny time you talk to any of Tommy Emmanuel’s fans\, whether musicians or audience members\, invariably they will speak of not one but two qualities that define his greatness. The first\, predictably\, is his extraordinary guitar playing.  Tommy is considered by those in the know to be among this planet’s greatest guitarists\, and his playing is simply miraculous\, as it would take three musicians\, or more\, to do what he does solo. Who else\, for example\, when playing “Day Tripper\,” can lay down the rhythm part\, dig into the riff\, and sing the melody all at once with just one acoustic guitar? \n \nWhich brings us to the other aspect of his music that is always mentioned\, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing: the joy. Yes\, joy. Because it’s one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile for the ages\, that evidence of authentic\, unbridled delight\, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does. “The joy\,” he says\, “is there always because I’m chasing it through music. Seeing the surprise in people’s eyes is worth living and working for… I can’t help but play to the people with all my heart\, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I’ve worked all my life for. And here it is!” \nAlthough his musical expression is instrumental\, he comes to the guitar much more like a vocalist\, positively singing melodies through the strings. He inhabits the tunes he performs\, delivering every nuance and turn of phrase. His own songs are also illuminated always with lyrical melodies that go right to the heart\, such as his beautiful ode to his daughter\, “Angelina\,” or his great “story without words\,” “Lewis & Clark.” That they resonate so deeply without words makes sense\, as words only go so far. But music\, coming from a genuine and joyful source\, can go so much farther. Now with The Best of Tommysongs\, he brings us a complete collection of his own songs\, all richly melodic and rendered with joy in real time. \n“When I was a kid\, I wanted to be in show business. Now\, I just want to be in the happiness business. I make music\, and you get happy. That’s a good job.”—Tommy Emmanuel
