SUMMARY:Chispa: Pimentel Concert Series\, Ronstadt Generations y Los Tucsonenses
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nRepresenting five generations in North America\, Ronstadt Generations continues the family’s musical traditions with Michael J. Ronstadt (younger brother of Linda) and his sons\, Michael G. and Petie D. In 2012 three veteran musicians—Alex Flores\, Sam Eagon\, and Aaron Emery—came on board to form the six-piece ensemble Ronstadt Generations y Los Tucsonenses (the Tucsonians). Playing tenor saxophone\, bass\, and drums\, respectively\, Alex\, Sam\, and Aaron add a colorful dimension to an already powerful presentation that respects tradition while exploring innovation. The ensemble’s albums include Prelude (2012) and Epilogue (2014). Presented in partnership with Pimentel Music\, this is the eighth concert in the Pimentel Music Series. It will be followed by an after-party at Hotel Albuquerque.\n$35

SUMMARY:Panquetzaliztli: An Aztec Celebration of the Season
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm—Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nKalpulli Ehecatl/Ehecatl Aztec Dancers and Friends present Panquetzaliztli\, a theatrical performance in three acts. The presentation\, an Aztec celebration of the season\, draws upon Mesoamerican creation myths and the history behind traditional holiday customs and includes a lyrically performed version of the Panquetzaliztli (Alzamiento de los Estandartes\, or Raising of the Banners) celebration\, a retelling of the history of Yankwik Tletl (Fuego Nuevo\, or the New Fire Ritual\, performed during Panquetzaliztli every 52 years)\, and\, as a closing act\, the Serpent of Fire Dance. \nPanquetzaliztli\, from December 16 to January 2\, is the fifteenth Zempoalilwitl\, or twenty-day period\, in the Mexika (Aztec) calendar. The seasonal festival goes by the same name\, and is celebrated ten days into the twenty-day period. It celebrates the winter solstice and the birth of the new Sun as Witzilopochtli (Hummingbird on the Left)\, one of the principal energies honored by the Mexika. \nThe festival of Panquetzaliztli is celebrated with dance\, music\, and a foot race. An effigy of Witzilopochtli is constructed from amaranth flour and agave nectar\, and consumed after the race as an integral part of the festivities. Tamales are also made and eaten\, and mock battles in honor of the season are waged between students of rival telpochkallis (schools). During the entire twenty days\, gratitude is shown towards all trees and plants for providing fruits\, grains\, herbs\, firewood\, etc.\, and they are adorned with decorations in the form of painted banners fabricated from strips of papel de amate (bark paper). \nKalpulli Ehecatl has been active in New Mexico for almost forty years\, educating the public about indigenous Mexika traditions while entertaining with warrior-style Mexika\, or Aztec\, dance.\n$12 w/ $2 discount for students/seniors/NHCC members

SUMMARY:Chispa: From Havana to Lima
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFrom the Caribbean to South America\, folkloric music is rich in history and tradition that derives from the impact and presence of African rhythms. The first half of this concert focuses on salsa and Afro-Cuban inspired Latin Jazz\, and features internationally acclaimed jazz musicians Bobby Shew and Doug Lawrence along with master Cuban musician César Bauvallet. Dancing\, as well as listening\, is encouraged! \nThe second half of the concert will feature\, for the first time in New Mexico\, Salsa Criolla. The interpretation of this new musical art form will feature brilliant vocalist Jackie Zamora from Lima\, Peru\, along with César Bauvallet. Joining them will be traditional Peruvian cajón player Christian Orellana\, guitarist Mathias Rodriguez\, bassist Andy Zadrozny\, flutist Doug Lawrence\, trumpeter Paul Gonzales\, and percussionists Victor Rodriguez\, Ricky Carrido\, and Tomás White. This set will also feature a medley of boleros\, Peruvian valses\, and a traditional landó performed by Ms. Zamora and Mr. Bauvallet.\n$22\, $27
