Like jazz\, flamenco has its roots in raw\, intimate improvisation upon standard structures; it improvises through interpretations of the structures of cante jondo\, or deep song. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT! \n8 pm \nPussy Riot is a Russian all-female protest art collective based in Moscow. Founded in March 2011\, it had a variable membership of approximately 11 women. Additionally\, the 2017 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, New Mexico\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of\nceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. Huerta’s appearance at this event coincides with Bernalillo County’s renaming of Gateway Park in the South Valley as Dolores Huerta Gateway Park\, and follows on the heels of the world premiere of the movie Dolores\, a documentary on Huerta’s life\, at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. \nShuttle service and ribbon cutting \nBefore the march begins\, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and a keynote address by Dolores Huerta at the park beginning at  9:30 am. Parking is limited at the park so shuttles will pick up participants at the NHCC education building from 8:30-9:30 am. The elegant bearing\, prodigious voice\, and fierce spirit that brought the audience to its feet that night is also abundantly evident on Giddens’ critically acclaimed solo debut\, the Grammy-nominated album Tomorrow Is My Turn\, which masterfully blends American musical genres like gospel\, jazz\, blues\, and country\, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess.\n$27\, $32\, $37 \n \nGiddens’ follow-up album\, Freedom Highway\, was released in February 2017. In this contemporary and very theatrical production\, Flores manipulates space and experiments with time—slowing it down\, speeding it up\, and changing its direction to open up a temporary timeline from another world and trap people and objects in an alternative dimension. \nFlores’ first large-scale choreographic work\, DeFlamencas\, explored the female universe; his second creation\, Tránsito\, reflected his interest in looking within. Subsequently\, he examined men’s actions and relationships in Laberíntica. With this new work\, he expands his artistic focus and direction as well as the dynamics of his choreography. The creative process in Entrar al Juego\, activated by intergenerational concerns\, begins by bringing together artists of various ages and origins\, with differing techniques and experiences. Breaking with traditional conceptions of hierarchy and methodology\, Flores involves the artists in a collective composition\, where the actions of each are essential to the development of the others\, as all discover their own strategies to move\, to be still\, and to continue with the work\, both individually and as a group. DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nAcoustic trio Lone Piñon\, from Santa Fe\, celebrates the diversity of their region’s cultural roots. Reviving and updating the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico\, they bring their consummate musicianship to northern New Mexican polka and chotis\, Mexican huapango and son calentano\, and classic borderlands conjunto. They are joined by veteran Albuquerque musicians Chuy Martínez\, a guitarist\, singer-songwriter\, folklorist\, and community cultural worker\, and Otilio Ruiz\, a virtuoso harpist\, music teacher\, and director of La Rondalla de Albuquerque. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the NHCC’s Fountain Courtyard\, enters its second season beginning in June. Their debut album Pilón was acclaimed for “…its solid arrangements and lively original songs [that] have impressed old-school salseros and young music fans alike.” Their sophomore album\, Bambulaye\, was recorded live to vintage analog tape\, giving it a raw\, warm sound similar to that of the Latin legends who have inspired the group.\n$17; free for 12 and younger \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Chispa\, a celebration of New Latin music in partnership with Avokado Artists\, presents Latin Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno and the incredible L.A.-based Latin alternative band Las Cafeteras. \nBorn and raised in Guatemala\, singer/songwriter Gaby Moreno was captivated in her youth by the sounds of the blues\, soul\, and jazz\, and now calls Los Angeles home. Mixing English and Spanish vocals in elegant harmonies\, she was awarded the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2013. Her albums include Still the Unknown (2008)\, Illustrated Songs (2011)\, Postales (2012)\, Posada (2014). and Ilusión (2016)\, nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. She sings the theme song for Disney’s animated television series Elena of Avalor\, and is featured on the soundtrack for the 2017 film How to Be a Latin Lover\, starring Selma Hayek\, Eugenio Derbez\, and Rob Lowe. Ilusión goes back to Moreno’s beginnings\, capturing the pure spirit of an aspiring immigrant artist who made her way in a new country with just her guitar\, her extraordinary voice\, and the songs she was eager to share. The bilingual refrain of the track “Fronteras” (“Borders”) embodies the essence of the album and the artist’s confident state of mind when she created it: “Y río y bailo. Está en mis venas. Y libre sueño. This is where I belong.” (“And I laugh and dance. It’s in my blood. And I dream free. This is where I belong.”) \nLas Cafeteras fuse the Afro-Caribbean roots and vibrant energy of traditional son jarocho with an edgy East Los Angeles alternative sound and a community-based political message\, creating a new urban folk sound in both English and Spanish. The product and reflection of a diverse\, hard-working\, politically active neighborhood\, they use their music to tell stories about the streets where they were raised\, the communities they live in today and their dreams for the world they hope to see in the future. Their eclectic instrumentation includes jarana\, requinto\, quijada (a donkey’s jawbone)\, marimbol (a West African bass instrument)\, cajón\, tarima (the wooden platform traditionally used to dance zapateado)\, and Native American drum and flute. Their second studio album\, Tastes Like L.A.\, features songs of activism and celebration and includes an updated version of their song “If I Was President.” Blending Mexican folk traditions with hip hop flavors and political discourse\, this bilingual song serves as a perfect summation of what the band is about. DESCRIPTION:10:30 am to 12 pm \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to offer free children’s programming during the summer. During June\, July\, and the first Saturday in August\, families will be able to come to the Center on Saturday mornings for hands-on art activities\, bilingual sing-alongs\, outdoor activities in the Bosque and to explore the science of cooking on a rotating basis. \nOn the second Saturday of each month\, Cantando la Cultura will provide participants with the opportunity to learn and sing along with traditional songs reflecting Hispanic heritage\, taught by local musicians. SUMMARY:La Pasión de Mariachi:  Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) \nLa Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness\, understanding\, and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music\, band member make-up\, and instruments. Mariachi groups\, like orchestras\, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments\, such as the guitarrón\, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre\, including son\, huapango\, and ranchera. \nThere will also be a demonstration of the beautiful teaching exchange between “master instructor” and student in violin\, guitar\, and voice. This exercise demonstrates the great gift of the MSA Workshop offered through Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, because it is very rare in any musical genre that iconic master musicians interact with and teach youthful students. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) \nA special mid-week performance in the series features TradiSón\, the house band at La Bodeguita del Medio restaurant in Havana\, famous for a storied clientele including Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Neruda. The band\, as its name suggests\, specializes in the son\, a musical form that combines Afro-Cuban rhythms and Spanish melody\, while performing other lively Cuban musical genres such as guaracha\, guajira\, and bolero. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the NHCC’s Fountain Courtyard\, enters its second season beginning in June. We have invited some of our musician friends\, from the local community and outside\, for lively community get-togethers right next to the beautiful Rio Grande Bosque.
