SUMMARY:La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) \nLa Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness\, understanding\, and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music\, band member make-up\, and instruments. Mariachi groups\, like orchestras\, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments\, such as the guitarrón\, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre\, including son\, huapango\, and ranchera. \nThere will also be a demonstration of the beautiful teaching exchange between “master instructor” and student in violin\, guitar\, and voice. This exercise demonstrates the great gift of the MSA Workshop offered through Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, because it is very rare in any musical genre that iconic master musicians interact with and teach youthful students. It would be the equivalent\, in rock and roll\, of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards teaching voice and guitar to an everyday music student. \nFor more information\, please check out the Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque website: www.mariachispectacular.com.\nFree community event

SUMMARY:AMP Concerts Presents Over the Rhine (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nAfter more than 20 years of making music\, it’s obvious that Ohio duo Over The Rhine is in it for the long haul. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist\, named to Paste magazine’s list of 100 Best Living Songwriters\, began performing together in 1990 in local Cincinnati clubs and gathering places. Their first show drew about 20 people\, most of them friends. But even from this somewhat humble beginning\, audiences knew that they had stumbled onto something special.  Treating their listeners like family\, Karin and Linford kept them close with simple candle-lit stages and playful handwritten newsletters\, but it was the band’s songs above all that continued to draw in more and more committed fans.  Karin’s voice\, full of longing and love\, seeming to pierce the soul\, has become the unmistakable focal point of Over The Rhine’s richly spiritual music.\n$27 \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. SUMMARY:Festival Chispa Presents: Daymé Arocena
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nRaised in Havana\, award-winning Afro-Cuban singer-songwriter Daymé Arocena has quickly become the voice for a new generation of talented Cuban millennials who are reimagining their African roots through a lens that filters jazz\, Cuban neo-soul\, funk\, and hip hop. Still in her mid-20s\, she has been described as “Cuba’s finest young female singer” (The Guardian). She began performing semi-professionally at the age of eight\, and became the lead singer for the band Los Primos at fourteen. Considered a musical prodigy\, she is also a trained composer\, arranger\, choir director\, and band leader. \nHer devotion to Afro-Cuban culture and to the Afro-Cuban Santería faith\, with its traditional chants and repertoire\, combined with an ability to absorb music of any kind\, have made Arocena one of the most exciting\, charismatic artists on the contemporary music scene. Her work encompasses the classic rhythms and diverse musical make-up of the country she grew up in\, while reaching outward to the world she has encountered in her recent travels. \nDaymé Arocena has been compared to both Celia Cruz and Aretha Franklin\, and her debut album\, Nueva Era\, made National Public Radio’s list of 50 favorite albums of 2015. Her latest release\, Cubafonía\, is already garnering rave reviews around the world. \nFestival Chispa Presents\, a partnership with Avokado Artists\, is a series that showcases some of the finest and most innovative groups\, both legendary and up-and-coming\, that the Latino world has to offer. Fusing various musical genres\, cultures\, and traditions\, this dynamic series breaks down musical boundaries and leaves the audience wanting more!\n$22\, $27

SUMMARY:Los Pleneros de la 21
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLos Pleneros de la 21 (“LP21”)\, an Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena ensemble featuring musicians\, dancers\, and artisans\, returns to New Mexico for a four-day National Performance Network (NPN) residency\, Redobles de Cultura Boricua\, which will include workshops and other activities as well as the group’s concert at the NHCC.  LP21’s complex\, multi-part vocal harmonies\, set to the rhythms of hand-held plena drums and barrel-shaped bomba drums\, resurrect the African-rooted bomba and plena musical styles of Puerto Rico. SUMMARY:Festival Chispa Presents: Inti-Illimani
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \n6:30-7:00 pm: Join Inti-Illimani before the concert begins in the Bank of America Theatre for a community dialogue! Come meet the band and here them talk about their music. \nFounded in 1967 by students at Santiago’s Universidad Técnica del Estado\, Inti-Illimani has performed worldwide for hundreds of thousands of fans\, collaborated with legendary artists\, earned awards and honors for activism as well as musicianship\, and produced one of Latin America’s richest discographies. On tour during the 1973 military coup in Chile\, they remained in Italy in de facto exile until 1988\, touring Chile days after they were no longer banned from the country and returning permanently in 1990. The time in Europe added elements of other musical genres to their music\, creating a fusion of folk/Latin/contemporary classical/avant-garde/world music played on over 30 instruments. They have lectured extensively on Latin American folk/indigenous music\, culture\, and social change\, and founded and teach at an arts-centric school in one of Santiago’s poorest neighborhoods. Still including one of the original founders\, the group celebrates 50 years of performing music grounded in their beloved Chile\, yet continuing to reach across time\, space\, and nations. More than a musical ensemble\, they have become a cultural location\, expressing the essence of the Latin American ethnomusical experience. Their current tour also promotes an album recorded in homage to the legendary Violeta Parra for her centenary. \nFestival Chispa Presents\, a partnership with Avokado Artists\, is a series that showcases some of the finest and most innovative groups\, both legendary and up-and-coming\, that the Latino world has to offer. Fusing various musical genres\, cultures\, and traditions\, this dynamic series breaks down musical boundaries and leaves the audience wanting more!\n$22\, $27 w/ $2 off for Students & Seniors\, $3 off for NHCC Members

SUMMARY:Shoes for the Santo Niño
DESCRIPTION:Friday at 7 pm\nSaturday at 2 pm \nShoes for the Santo Niño is the story of Julianita\, the youngest of eleven children\, who slips out of her home one evening to take a pair of “practical” shoes that she has made to the Santo Niño de Atocha. When she enters the church\, the Santo Niño and the saints come to life\, and Julianita is whisked off into an evening of mystery\, magic\, and miracles. \nThis joyous piece by the Santa Fe Opera depicts the important role of the Santo Niño de Atocha as part of the traditional cultural fabric of northern New Mexico in both Hispanic and Native American families. The tale of Julianita and the Santo Niño\, passed down from generation to generation\, is adapted from the charming children’s story by Peggy Pond Church. The Santo Niño is known as an advocate for healing\, primarily of children\, and many believe that he wears the shoes left by pilgrims who visit his shrines to walk abroad and heal sick children while they sleep. \nPhoto by Brandon Soder.\n$7 for everyone

SUMMARY:Chispa: NM Jazz Latino Orchestra\, From the Beginning
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nThe first half of the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra’s latest offering\, From the Beginning\, celebrates the music written by and associated with the great Dizzy Gillespie. The featured artist\, Bobby Shew on trumpet\, is an international jazz star and a personal friend of Mr. Gillespie. Joining Mr. Shew is tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence\, who toured with Mr. Gillespie and his band in the 1980s; master Cuban musician César Bauvallet\, who performed with Mr. Gillespie when he travelled to Havana on the 1970s\, leads the rhythm section on congas. \nThe second half of the show features a tribute to the great Chabuca Granda\, widely considered Peru’s most legendary singer. NMJLO performs Ms. Granda’s music in the “Salsa Criolla” style\, in which salsa and jazz musicians present a blend of salsa repertoire with Afro‐Peruvian festejo backgrounds\, synchronizing these two popular musical styles with traditional instrumentation to provide a blend of ancestral and contemporary tones. This year NMJLO is proud to present\, directly from Lima\, Peru\, Tito Manrique. Mr. Manrique is a Salsa Criolla guitarist\, composer\, and arranger who enjoys immense popularity throughout South America\, and who will bring with him brand new arrangements of music associated with Ms. Granda. Joining Mr. Manrique are brilliant vocalist Jackie Zamora (also from Lima) and César Bauvallet on trombone.\n$27\, $32 w/ $3 off for NHCC Members \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!
