SUMMARY:Chispa:  From Havana to Lima
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFrom the Caribbean to South America\, folkloric music is rich in history and tradition that derives from the impact and presence of African rhythms. For decades\, these rhythms have left an indelible imprint on music around the world. When American jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie first started incorporating these Afro-Latino rhythms in the 1940s\, a new musical art form was born\, Latin Jazz. The first half of this concert focuses on salsa and Afro-Cuban inspired Latin Jazz\, and features internationally acclaimed jazz musicians Bobby Shew and Doug Lawrence along with master Cuban musician César Bauvallet. Accompanied by an all-star nine-piece band\, these great musicians will play the music and arrangements of Tito Puente\, Mario Bauza\, Mongo Santamaría\, Chucho Valdes\, Poncho Sanchez\, and César Bauvallet. Dancing\, as well as listening\, is encouraged! \nThe second half of the concert will feature\, for the first time in New Mexico\, Salsa Criolla. This brand-new concept\, beginning to travel the world\, involves salsa and jazz musicians presenting a blend of salsa repertoire with Afro‐Peruvian festejo backgrounds\, synchronizing these two popular musical styles with traditional instrumentation to provide a blend of ancestral and contemporary tones. The interpretation of this new musical art form will feature brilliant vocalist Jackie Zamora from Lima\, Peru\, along with César Bauvallet. Joining them will be traditional Peruvian cajón player Christian Orellana\, guitarist Mathias Rodriguez\, bassist Andy Zadrozny\, flutist Doug Lawrence\, trumpeter Paul Gonzales\, and percussionists Victor Rodriguez\, Ricky Carrido\, and Tomás White. This set will also feature a medley of boleros\, Peruvian valses\, and a traditional landó performed by Ms. Zamora and Mr. Bauvallet.\n$22\, $27

An eclectic artist\, he plays bluegrass\, blues\, folk\, jazz\, country and western\, and rock and roll equally well. He is known for his quirky\, humorous lyrics and his ability to play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time. \nBromberg has played with many famous musicians\, including Jerry Jeff Walker\, Willie Nelson\, Jorma Kaukonen\, Jerry Garcia\, Rusty Evans (The Deep)\, and Bob Dylan. He co-wrote the song “The Holdup” with former Beatle George Harrison\, who played on Bromberg’s self-titled 1972 album. Additionally\, the 2017 César Chávez and Dolores Huerta ¡Sí Se Puede! awards will be presented to people who have served the community in the spirit of the United Farm Workers leaders. \nDolores Huerta\, a native of Dawson\, New Mexico\, was co-founder\, with César Chávez\, of the United Farm Workers Union. In 2012\, Huerta was recognized for her decades of\nceaseless civil rights and labor organizing when Barack Obama granted her the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award\, the greatest civilian honor in the United States. Huerta’s appearance at this event coincides with Bernalillo County’s renaming of Gateway Park in the South Valley as Dolores Huerta Gateway Park\, and follows on the heels of the world premiere of the movie Dolores\, a documentary on Huerta’s life\, at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. \nShuttle service and ribbon cutting \nBefore the march begins\, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and a keynote address by Dolores Huerta at the park beginning at  9:30 am. Parking is limited at the park so shuttles will pick up participants at the NHCC education building from 8:30-9:30 am. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nSinger-songwriter Rhiannon Giddens is the co-founder of the Grammy award-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops\, in which she also plays banjo and fiddle. She began gaining recognition as a solo artist when she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett–produced Another Day\, Another Time concert at New York City’s Town Hall in 2013. The elegant bearing\, prodigious voice\, and fierce spirit that brought the audience to its feet that night is also abundantly evident on Giddens’ critically acclaimed solo debut\, the Grammy-nominated album Tomorrow Is My Turn\, which masterfully blends American musical genres like gospel\, jazz\, blues\, and country\, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess.\n$27\, $32\, $37 \n \nGiddens’ follow-up album\, Freedom Highway\, was released in February 2017. It includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote\, along with a traditional song and two civil rights era songs\, “Birmingham Sunday\,” and the Staple Singers’ well-known “Freedom Highway\,” from which the album takes its name. \nGiddens’ recent televised performances include The Late Show\, Austin City Limits\, Later…with Jools Holland\, and both CBS Saturday and Sunday Morning\, among numerous other notable media appearances. DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Marco Flores in Entrar al Juego. In this contemporary and very theatrical production\, Flores manipulates space and experiments with time—slowing it down\, speeding it up\, and changing its direction to open up a temporary timeline from another world and trap people and objects in an alternative dimension. \nFlores’ first large-scale choreographic work\, DeFlamencas\, explored the female universe; his second creation\, Tránsito\, reflected his interest in looking within. Subsequently\, he examined men’s actions and relationships in Laberíntica. With this new work\, he expands his artistic focus and direction as well as the dynamics of his choreography. The creative process in Entrar al Juego\, activated by intergenerational concerns\, begins by bringing together artists of various ages and origins\, with differing techniques and experiences. Breaking with traditional conceptions of hierarchy and methodology\, Flores involves the artists in a collective composition\, where the actions of each are essential to the development of the others\, as all discover their own strategies to move\, to be still\, and to continue with the work\, both individually and as a group. Along with stage director and choreographer Juan Carlos Lérida\, he proposes to the participants in Entrar al Juego that they dance in a timeless place\, and the audience witnesses how people transform when confronted with the need to continue\, to resolve the unknown nature of that place.\n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85
