SUMMARY:La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm \nLa Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness\, understanding and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music\, band member make-up\, and instruments. Mariachi groups\, like orchestras\, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments\, such as the guitarrón\, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre\, including son\, huapango\, and ranchera. \nThere will also be a demonstration of the beautiful teaching exchange between “master instructor” and student in violin\, guitar\, and voice. This exercise demonstrates the great gift of the workshop offered through Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, because it is very rare in any musical genre that iconic master musicians interact with and teach youthful students. It would be the equivalent\, in rock and roll\, of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards teaching voice and guitar to an everyday music student.\nFree Community Event

SUMMARY:AMP Concerts Presents Over the Rhine (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLinford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist\, named to Paste magazine’s list of 100 Best Living Songwriters\, began performing together in 1990 in local Cincinnati clubs and gathering places. Treating their listeners like family\, Karin and Linford kept them close with simple candle-lit stages and playful handwritten newsletters\, but it was the band’s songs above all that continued to draw in more and more committed fans.  Karin’s voice\, full of longing and love\, seeming to pierce the soul\, has become the unmistakable focal point of Over the Rhine’s richly spiritual music.\n$27

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte\, featuring Jesús Díaz y Su QBA
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nThe NHCC’s new summer music and dance series in the Center’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard presents this season’s last concert\, in partnership with Melaza Music. Spend a final evening with us enjoying live music\, drinks\, and the delicious Latin cuisine of Nob Hill’s Guava Tree Cafe. We have invited some of our musician friends\, from the local community and outside\, for lively summer get-togethers right next to the beautiful Rio Grande Bosque. \nCuban-born percussionist\, arranger\, vocalist\, and educator Jesús Díaz\, a resident of the Bay Area since 1980\, is now one of the most in-demand performers and studio musicians worldwide. A key member of many of the region’s leading Latin ensembles\, he has performed with artists including Stevie Wonder\, Carlos Santana\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Tito Puente\, and Celia Cruz. His 10-piece orchestra Jesús Díaz y Su QBA\, founded in 1998\, has a repertoire of original compositions based on traditional Afro-Cuban music with influences of funk and jazz—the new Cuban dance music known as timba. \nJoining Díaz as a special guest will be Grammy award-winner and four-time Grammy nominee Raul Pineda\, named one of the best and most innovative Latin drummers in the world today. His unique style of playing—a blend of Afro-Cuban and contemporary jazz influences applied to the modern drum set—has made him one of Cuba’s most influential drummers in his generation.\n$17; free for 12 and younger

Playing tenor saxophone\, bass\, and drums\, respectively\, Alex\, Sam\, and Aaron add a colorful dimension to an already powerful presentation that respects tradition while exploring innovation. The ensemble’s albums include Prelude (2012) and Epilogue (2014). Presented in partnership with Pimentel Music\, this is the eighth concert in the Pimentel Music Series. It will be followed by an after-party at Hotel Albuquerque.\n$35

SUMMARY:Panquetzaliztli: An Aztec Celebration of the Season
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm—Saturday\n 2 pm—Sunday \nKalpulli Ehecatl/Ehecatl Aztec Dancers and Friends present Panquetzaliztli\, a theatrical performance in three acts. The presentation\, an Aztec celebration of the season\, draws upon Mesoamerican creation myths and the history behind traditional holiday customs and includes a lyrically performed version of the Panquetzaliztli (Alzamiento de los Estandartes\, or Raising of the Banners) celebration\, a retelling of the history of Yankwik Tletl (Fuego Nuevo\, or the New Fire Ritual\, performed during Panquetzaliztli every 52 years)\, and\, as a closing act\, the Serpent of Fire Dance. \nPanquetzaliztli\, from December 16 to January 2\, is the fifteenth Zempoalilwitl\, or twenty-day period\, in the Mexika (Aztec) calendar. The seasonal festival goes by the same name\, and is celebrated ten days into the twenty-day period. It celebrates the winter solstice and the birth of the new Sun as Witzilopochtli (Hummingbird on the Left)\, one of the principal energies honored by the Mexika. \nThe festival of Panquetzaliztli is celebrated with dance\, music\, and a foot race. An effigy of Witzilopochtli is constructed from amaranth flour and agave nectar\, and consumed after the race as an integral part of the festivities. Tamales are also made and eaten\, and mock battles in honor of the season are waged between students of rival telpochkallis (schools). During the entire twenty days\, gratitude is shown towards all trees and plants for providing fruits\, grains\, herbs\, firewood\, etc.\, and they are adorned with decorations in the form of painted banners fabricated from strips of papel de amate (bark paper). \nKalpulli Ehecatl has been active in New Mexico for almost forty years\, educating the public about indigenous Mexika traditions while entertaining with warrior-style Mexika\, or Aztec\, dance.\n$12 w/ $2 discount for students/seniors/NHCC members
