Chispa: Latin Diva Series, Vanessa Zamora

7:30 pm Born in Tijuana, Baja California to parents who were both pianists, acoustic folk-pop singer/songwriter Vanessa Zamora became interested in the performing arts as a child. She began piano lessons at the age of eight, and continued a year later with guitar and drums. While a student at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, she began uploading videos covering favorite songs by various artists on YouTube and social networking sites. 7:30 pm A star in contemporary world music, jazz, flamenco, and fusion, Buika is one of the most sought-after performers on the world stage today.  Born to African parents in Mallorca, Spain, she is often compared to Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas, and Cesaria Evora.  Her recordings have received multiple awards, including several Latin Grammys, and her 2013 release, La noche más larga, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. 23rd Annual César Chávez Day

10:30 am - Marcha 12 pm – Fiesta Join the 23rd annual César Chávez Day celebration, with a march beginning at 10:30 am and ending at noon at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor.  Following the march, the family fiesta at the Center includes poetry, dancing, community awards and exhibits, children’s activities, food, a keynote speech by Carlos Marentes, and live music by Las Cafeteras. Pre-show reading—6 pm Performance—7 pm Commemorate the 400th anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’ death with a special flamenco recital, performed by singer and composer Fernando Barros Lirola and his company. The performance will combine music and dance in an exploration of Cervantes’ major work, Don Quixote, and a tribute to the flamenco tradition, one of the most revered in Spanish culture.
