    6 pm Acoustic trio Lone Piñon, from Santa Fe, celebrates the diversity of their region’s cultural roots. Reviving and updating the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico, they bring their consummate musicianship to northern New Mexican polka and chotis, Mexican huapango and son calentano, and classic borderlands conjunto.     8 pm Festival Chispa, a celebration of New Latin music in partnership with Avokado Artists, presents Latin Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno and the incredible L.A.-based Latin alternative band Las Cafeteras. Born and raised in Guatemala, singer/songwriter Gaby Moreno was captivated in her youth by the sounds of the blues, soul, and jazz, and now calls Los Angeles home.   • Domingos en Arte: Los Texmaniacs & Mariachi Flor de Toloache

  • Jugamos Juntos: Cantando la Cultura

    10:30 am to 12 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to offer free children’s programming during the summer. During June, July, and the first Saturday in August, families will be able to come to the Center on Saturday mornings for hands-on art activities, bilingual sing-alongs, outdoor activities in the Bosque and to explore the science of cooking on a rotating basis.   • La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence

    6 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) La Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music, band member make-up, and instruments. Mariachi groups, like orchestras, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments, such as the guitarrón, are unique to this form of music.     7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) A special mid-week performance in the series features TradiSón, the house band at La Bodeguita del Medio restaurant in Havana, famous for a storied clientele including Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Neruda. The band, as its name suggests, specializes in the son, a musical form that combines Afro-Cuban rhythms and Spanish melody, while performing other lively Cuban musical genres such as guaracha, guajira, and bolero.   • AMP Concerts Presents John Gorka (Rental)

    7:30 pm A singer/songwriter famed for his stunningly soulful baritone, John Gorka is one of the leading lights of the new folk movement. In 1987, Gorka cut his debut album, I Know, for the Red House label, winning acclaim for his songs’ subtle wit and acute observations. In the 1990s, he released several albums on the Windham Hill label. Since returning to Red House in 1998, Gorka has released several well-regarded albums, including The Company You Keep and So Dark You See, as well as Red Horse. (more...)
