SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Lone Piñon and Lenore Armijo
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLone Piñon is an acoustic conjunto from Northern New Mexico whose music celebrates the diversity and integrity of their region’s cultural roots. Using violins\, accordion\, quinta huapangera\, bajo sexto\, guitarrón\, tololoche and vocals in Spanish\, English\, Nahuatl\, and P’urépecha\, the group has revived and updated the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico\, bringing a devoted musicianship to Northern New Mexican polkas and chotes\, virtuosic Mexican huapango and son calentano\, and classic borderlands conjunto. \nGrowing up in New Mexico\, Lenore Armijo was exposed to a unique blend of music including jazz\, ranchera and classical. Her own style has propelled her career onto various stages around New Mexico\, and more recently in films such as “Descansos” and “Letters to Our Daughters.” Her recent appearances on stage include the live New Mexico Tour of “Bless Me Ultima\,” written by Rudolfo Anaya\, and “Living Purgatory\,” written by Patricia Crespin. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. The NHCC’s newest on-campus restaurant—La Fonda del Bosque—will be offering unique themed dinners before each concert and providing a cash bar and tapas throughout the night. \n$11 in Advance\, $14 Day of Show \n  Thank you to our Domingos en Arte media sponsor Telemundo! \n \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. SUMMARY:Remember the Time
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nMusic has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas\, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012\, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue\, then in its seventh year.  This event\, showcasing great rock\, soul\, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s\, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion of some of the city’s finest musicians from that era. In 2014 the Barelas Coffee House presented Oh What A Night\, and in 2015 Cruizin’ Central\, to sold-out houses; these were unique opportunities for family and friends to come together and listen\, sing along\, and dance to music from the 1950s through the 1980s. In 2016 and 2017\, the first and second Remember the Time dance concerts brought back memories of happy times at venues such as the Civic Auditorium\, Leo’s La Roc\, and the Far West. This year’s concert\, focusing on more recent decades\, once again celebrates life\, love\, and music at its best with great Albuquerque musicians who have been entertaining New Mexico audiences over the years.  Featured bands are Picoso\, Fat City\, and Soul Divine\, three dynamic local dance bands with dedicated fan bases. \nOpened in 1978 as a precursor to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood\, the Barelas Coffee House is itself an iconic Albuquerque venue and a popular local meeting place as well as a tourist attraction.  The NHCC is once again entering into a presenting partnership with the Barelas Coffee House\, through owner Michael Anthony Gonzales\, for the 3rd annual Remember the Time dance concert.\n$27 w/ $2 off for NHCC members

SUMMARY:Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and Baracutanga
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLos Gaiteros de San Jacinto\, a traditional folkloric cumbia group from Colombia’s Caribbean region\, has been active since 1940. Their music preserves the traditional rhythms and sounds that are the product of a mixture of Indigenous\, Spanish\, and Afro-Colombian heritage. Dating back at least to the time of Bolivar\, gaitero music is played on two flutes (gaitas) and a maraca\, both of Indigenous origin\, and drums of African origin\, through the descendants of the many African slaves who passed through the country’s Caribbean coast. The group’s founder\, Antonio “Toño” Fernández\, is credited with paving the way for modern cumbia’s enormous popularity throughout the Americas by being the first to successfully put words to gaitero music. The group is currently headed by four of the original members\, who perform with a new generation of gaiteros. Thanks in large part to them\, gaitero music has become one of the most influential traditional styles in Colombian popular music today. \nBaracutanga\, a New Mexico-based seven-piece band representing four different countries (Bolivia\, Ecuador\, Peru\, and the U.S.)\, prides itself on arranging traditional South American rhythms in new and interesting ways\, such as mixing huayño and cumbia with Middle Eastern darbuka\, or Afro-Cuban batá and Afro-Peruvian festejo with Andean zampoñas\, among other combinations. This kind of experimentation\, blending ancestral traditions with a modern sensibility\, results in an exciting\, distinctive Latin flavor that is all its own. Lyrically and musically\, Baracutanga proposes to build bridges between the south and north\, finding common ground in creating songs that cross linguistic and cultural barriers and promoting cultural experiences that empower Latinos with a message of self-affirmation. Baracutanga will be celebrating the release of their latest single and video “Cuida Tus Espaldas.\n$22\, $27 w/ $2 off for NHCC Members

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: La Chamba
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nWith roots in East and South Central Los Angeles\, La Chamba is driven by electric guitar that fuses ‘60’s psychedelic-inspired surf-pop from Peru with Afro-Latin rhythms. “Chamba\,” literally meaning “work\,” is a word used throughout the barrios of Latin America to describe one’s hustle. The band’s sound pays homage to the melodies and grooves of Peruvian Chicha music popular among the working classes of Lima and the Amazon. La Chamba encourages folks to let loose and release their grind on the dance floor—their audience is as much a part of the performance as they are. \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Patio Courtyard that features live music by a wide range of Latino artists\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. DESCRIPTION:3 pm \nJoin Changüí Majadero (before their performance for Domingos en Arte) in the History and Literary Arts Building to learn about how the band imagines\, writes and puts music to lyrics. \nNew York Music Daily describes the band’s lyrics to Un Burro y un Elefante as a “wry\, spot-on critique of American politics” and to Pa Cuba Me Voy as a “fearless political shout-out to the island.”  Where does songwriting start?  How does it make its way to music and song? \nInside Songwriting with Changüí Majadero is a free event but spaces are limited. Reserve your spot by July 25: https://nhccnm.wufoo.com/forms/m14m7ux1qi8wa7/. \n

SUMMARY:ABQ Latin Dance Fest Lecture Series: Cuban Music: Beyond Buena Vista Social Club
DESCRIPTION:6: 30 pm \nPRESENTER: Daybert Linares Díaz \nSYNOPSIS: In 1999\, the release of a documentary “Buena Vista Social Club\,” which depicted the process of recording the album of the same title two years prior\, became a worldwide phenomenon. After decades of partial musical obscurity due to the U.S. embargo on the island\, the international audience was once again regaled with the sounds of a pre-1959\, pre-communist Cuba. For many U.S. people\, Buena Vista Social Club signified a return to those times\, a memory of a “lost” island and rhythms—both also lost in time. \nBuena Vista Social Club’s international success and critical acclaim\, however\, bypassed entire generations of Cuban music. Indeed\, the album focused mainly on rhythms that had been produced between the 1930s and 50s. But what happened between 1959\, the year Fidel Castro took power\, and the advent of the second millennium? What music were Cuban musicians producing during this time? What new rhythms were developed? How did the music of Cuba evolve during all these years? And more importantly\, was Buena Vista Social Club an accurate representation of the contemporary music in Cuba at the time that it was released? This presentation is an invitation to explore these questions\, to listen to music\, and to learn what Cuba has produced\, musically speaking\, beyond Buena Vista Social Club.
