SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Bluebeard’s Castle with Doctor Atomic
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 22\, 27 & 29\n2:00 pm Sundays\n7:30 pm Friday \nEnter Bluebeard’s Castle if you dare! \nJust in time for Halloween\, Opera Southwest presents a double bill of thrills and chills! First\, join us for Bartok’s chilling one-act opera\, Bluebeard’s Castle. Then\, dive into the psychological horror story of the Doctor Atomic Symphony\, based on the Doctor Atomic opera by John Adams. This symphony tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the first successful atom bomb. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nFirst on the bill\, Bluebeard’s Castle\, the story of Judith\, the young new wife of the menacing Duke Bluebeard\, who unlocks the seven forbidden doors in her husband’s castle and is eventually confronted by the women he has already loved and murdered. \nThis production has us working with two senior set artists from Meow Wolf: Lance Ryan McGoldrick and David Cudney. In this symbolist opera\, each room is assigned a color. The two artists are working with the traditional themes while interpreting them using modern technology and their specialized skills. McGoldrick and Cudney have been collaborating for a decade and they’re bringing all their artistic experience to the scenic design of this production. They’re creating atmospheric effects\, sculptures\, and projections that will enhance the seven secret rooms as Judith insists on unlocking each door of her new husband’s castle. \nNext up\, the Doctor Atomic Symphony performed by the OSW opera orchestra with projections. In this atmospheric composition\, Adams presents highlights from the full opera\, with instrumental treatments of the story and themes. \n“With the incredible interest in Oppenheimer unleashed by this summer’s blockbuster movie\, Oppenheimer\, Opera Southwest decided to revisit the music of the popular new opera by John Adams\, Doctor Atomic\, by presenting the Doctor Atomic Symphony on the opening program of our 51st season\,” said Tony Zancanella\, OSW Executive Director.  “As a small & nimble company\, we are sometimes able to pivot programmatically to meet a broader cultural moment.” “There are all of these striking thematic and symbolic cross-connections between these works\, which delve deep into the psychology of their central subjects as they tackle dark and morally complex themes.” said Artistic Director Anthony Barrese. \nRun time: 2 hours 30 minutes\, including one intermission. \n*This event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images\, and description for the event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue. SUMMARY:Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company: Xicano Power
DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm Friday\, 4:00 pm Saturday \nNational Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez\, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. The current concert season marks the performance’s first appearance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \n$48\, $58\, $68\, $78 & $88 w/ a $5 discount for Seniors\, Students w/ Id\, Children 12 yeas old and younger and NHCC Members \n \nThis powerful display of flamenco is framed around the poet Rudolfo “Corky” González’s seminal poem “Yo Soy Joaquín.” González wrote the poem in 1967 to express the struggle of a people and the need for a Chicano movement. Here\, the poem appears to express shared identities and deepen the company’s and audiences’ interpretation of these repertory pieces. In 2004\, just five years after Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company’s inception\, Israel Galván choreographed Xicano Power on the company. \nIn titling the work\, Galván chose a name representative of the people performing. By doing so\, Galván acknowledged the importance of the people doing the art. We have chosen Xicano Power for the title of this performance\, focusing again on the interpreters and the power that shapes who they are. Chicano identity and culture permeate the land and space that this company comes from. The choreographies presented in Xicano Power showcase flamenco’s incredible expressive range: explosive\, elegant\, raw\, delightful\, complex\, beautiful; each piece as unique as its creator. \nFor more information about our friends at the National Institute of Flamenco\, please\, click Here. \nXicano Power – Yjastros group (Photo credit: Rafael Manjavacas)

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Beyond Carmen
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Audrey Babcock and Andrés Vadin\n3:00 pm \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \nOpera Southwest and the National Hispanic Cultural Center present an homage to Bizet’s Carmen. Mezzo-soprano Audrey Babcock weaves legends of the Old World into a 21st-century musical tapestry that spans generations and genres—from classical to flamenco to tango\, medieval to modern. Featuring guitarist Andrés Vadin. \n$35 with discounts for students and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \n“Carmen. There is no more iconic woman in Operatic history. She is so singled out that her image has become mainstream and is synonymous with the Femme Fatale. There is no image\, no legend\, no creature\, more riddled with weaponized femininity then my beloved\, Carmencita. Carmen’s origin story is rich—it has been written that the author of the original novella\, Prosper Mérimée\, derived his inspiration for this illusory gypsy from a real-life Sephardic Jew. Though Jews were exotic at the time\, Gypsies had a more solid reputation for nefariousness and made a more daring choice for his Parisian newspaper-reading audience. With ‘Beyond Carmen’ we will explore her Sephardic roots\, singing in Ladino or “Judeo Spanish”\, similar to ancient Castilian Spanish. We will play with the rhythms\, textures\, and accents of the marginalized people of the diaspora\, and most of all we will sing and cry out for the misunderstood experience of being fiercely female in a time that saw a woman’s strength as something dangerous\, dark\, and destined for annihilation.” – Audrey Babcock \n$35 with discounts for students and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \nFor more information about Opera Southwest\, please\, visit their website here: www.operasouthwest.org

SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Billy the Kid & Other Tall Tales
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Friday\n2:00 pm & 7:00 pm Saturday \nBilly the Kid\, Blue Jean Blues\, Southwest FolkTails\, & Giselle\nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents an original production of Billy the Kid\, a ballet telling the story of Billy from childhood until his death at age 22\, true to historical accuracy as anyone knows. The ballet has an ensemble of cowboys\, townspeople\, dance hall girls\, and the important people in Billy’s life\, including his beloved Mother\, John Tunstall\, J.J. Dolan\, love interest Maria\, and of course\, Sheriff Pat Garrett. \n \nThe evening begins with the music of the Mystic Vic Blues Band playing live onstage with the FBA professional dancers in Blue Jean Blues choreographed by Patricia Dickinson Wells. A new children’s ballet\, Southwest FolkTails is based on families of New Mexican “critters” sporting tails with character costumes expertly designed and constructed by master craftsman\, Joe Moncada. Imagine hummingbirds\, quails\, coyotes\, snakes\, and roosters! \nThe evening ends with the classical 18th century ballet\, Giselle (in One Act) complete with village scenes\, beautiful costumes\, and scenery. The epic ballet premiered in 1841\, but most of the versions today are based on the revivals by choreographer Marius Petipa in the early 20th century.  Set to music by composer Adolphe Adam\, the epic story follows the tragically short life of Giselle through love\, heartache\, death\, and the after-death where she is summoned from her grave by the vengeful\, deadly sisterhood of the Willis who are unmarried women who died after being betrayed by their lover. Giselle’s great love for her betrayer\, Albrecht\, saves him from sure death by the Willis\, and thus saves herself from becoming one of them. \nCome ½ hour early before showtime and enjoy a pre-concert performance by Mystic Vic Blues Band! \n$14\, $20\, $29\, $39 & $49 w/ a $2 discount for seniors and children 10 years old and younger \nRun Time: 2 hours \n*The event is a rental event not an NHCC production. The title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Carmen – en español!
DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm Saturday & Sunday\n7:30 pm Wednesday & Friday  \nMusic / Georges Bizet\nLibretto / Henri Meilhac & Ludovic Halévy\, Spanish translation by Eduardo De Bray \nHead to the National Hispanic Cultural Center for one of the most popular operas of our time! \nOpera Southwest and the NHCC present Carmen – en español! “Habanera” and “Toreador” are well-known arias that linger in your mind long after the performance is over. The controversial themes of rebellion\, immorality\, and the tragic death of the main character shocked French audiences when it was initially performed. The opera’s popularity and the main character’s notoriety left lasting impressions on audiences for decades. \nThe tale revolves around a passionate love triangle between Carmen\, a seductive cigarette girl\, Don Jose\, a solider\, and Escamillo\, a handsome bullfighter. Despite Don Jose’s efforts to resist her charms\, he succumbs to Carmen’s enchantment\, resulting in his downfall and Carmen’s demise. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nThe presentation of Carmen will be in Spanish. The translation\, by Eduardo de Bray\, dates back to 1904 and comes from a Barcelona zarzuela company. \nRunning time: 2 hours 30 minutes\, including one intermission.
