SUMMARY:Festival Ballet Albuquerque: Sacred Journeys V
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Friday & Saturday\, 2:00 pm Sunday \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents Sacred Journeys V featuring Robert Mirabal. \nClassical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with Festival Ballet Albuquerque’s artistic director Patricia Dickinson Wells and with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto\, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent. Soto\, who is originally from Gallup and will also make guest appearances onstage\, now lives in Eagle Nest\, NM. \nAdditional choreographers for the production are native New Mexican Dominic Guerra\, and internationally known Vladimir Conde-Reche\, a native of São Paulo\, Brazil\, and Alex Ossadnik originally from East Germany. Additional guest artists include the Trujillo Family traditional Native American dancers. \n \nRobert Mirabal\, dedicated to keeping alive the centuries-old customs of Taos Pueblo\, is also a leading proponent of world music\, and has merged his Indigenous American sound with the music of Africa\, Asia\, and the Caribbean\, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies characterization. His 2002 breakthrough PBS special\, Music from a Painted Cave\, is unsurpassed in Native American theatrical expression. He performs live with his band\, Rare Tribal Mob. \nA former principal dancer with the New York Ballet\, Jock Soto was one of the last dancers to be personally selected by founder George Balanchine when he was barely 16. He danced featured roles in over 40 ballets\, of which more than 35 were created for him. The author of Every Step You Take and the subject of the documentary Water Flowing Together (the name of his Navajo clan)\, Soto teaches partnering and technique classes at the School of American Ballet\, where he has been a permanent member of the faculty since 1996. \nSacred Journeys V brings together the rich and diverse culture of our state\, while providing extraordinary role models for New Mexico’s youth. \nSACRED JOURNEYS V: The Live Performance Recording was honored to be screened in 2021 at the Red Nation International Film festival and the American Indian Film Festival. \n$16\, $25\, $35\, $45\, $55 w/ a $2 discount for seniors\, children 10 and younger and NHCC members

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: New Year’s with the Opera!
DESCRIPTION:2:30 pm \nOpera Southwest presents New Year’s with the Opera! Featuring Clay Hilley & Sara Duchovnay \nClose out 2024 and begin 2025 with featured performers tenor Clay Hilley and soprano Sara Duchovnay. Clay Hilley makes an exciting return to Opera Southwest after his stunning portrayal of Radamès in “Aida” back in 2015. Clay comes to us directly from the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has earned rave reviews from the New York Times and Financial Times\, and he continues to shine in some of opera’s most illustrious heroic roles. Sara Duchovnay has been hailed by The San Francisco Examiner as “clarion voiced” and OperaWire described her as “dynamic and expressive”\, further adding that she “sang with warmth and luster” and “moved with elan\, thus matching her vocal vibrancy”. Of her 2019 role debut as Nedda in Pagliacci with Opera Roanoke\, the Roanoke Times praised her “nuanced portrait of an unhappy woman” and “her high notes [which] rang out with ease at the swelling climaxes in both her first act aria and in her love duet with Silvio.”  \nAccompanying our singers are the Opera Southwest Orchestra\, the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus\, and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. With a variety of opera favorites and light classics\, there is something for everyone to ring in the New Year. \nRunning time: Approx 2 hours \n$35\, $47\, $60\, $72\, & $85 with discounts for students and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. Opera for All tickets are limited to 2 per ID and must be purchased at the NHCC box office by calling 505-724-4771 or in person. \nPurchase a VIP After Show Party ticket and join the Opera cast\, staff and crew for a reception after the performance. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing the Capulet’s ball. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet\, who is due to marry her father’s choice\, Count Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse\, the women arrange for the couple be married the following day by Friar Lorence. Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of his friend Mercutio and he kills Tybalt\, Juliet’s own cousin\, in revenge. Romeo is banished from Verona. The message fails to reach Romeo\, and believing Juliet dead\, he takes his life in her tomb. When Juliet wakes and realizes his mistake\, she follows him into death. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Rafaela Carrasco y compañía: Nocturna
DESCRIPTION:8:30 pm \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nNational Institute of Flamenco and the NHCC present Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Rafaela Carrasco y compañía: “Nocturna.” Nocturna is a flamenco performance that delves into the mysteries of the night\, exploring themes of insomnia\, dreams\, and the passage of time. Choreographed and directed by Rafaela Carrasco\, with dramaturgy by Álvaro Tato\, the show journeys through the emotional and psychological landscapes of sleepless nights. \nCombining dance\, music\, and poetry\, Nocturna evokes the contradictions of the night: tranquility and madness\, love and fear\, dream and nightmare. The production features a rich interplay of live flamenco singing\, piano\, and electronic music\, inspired by J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations\, silences\, and original compositions. \nThe dancers navigate moments of solitude and togetherness on stage\, reflecting the transformation and movement the night imposes on the human spirit. It is a poetic\, deeply evocative experience that strips the soul bare\, revealing the most intimate emotions hidden in darkness. \nNocturna is an ambitious work\, seamlessly blending tradition and modernity to reimagine flamenco’s emotional and artistic possibilities \n$59\, $73\, $89\, $103 & $119. *Price includes the NHCC’s $4 fee. \n\n*All NHCC performance/event ticket sales go through the National Hispanic Cultural Center Website.
