DESCRIPTION:February 2\, 7 & 9\, 2020\n2 pm—Sundays\n7:30 pm—Friday \nOpera Southwest presents Daniel Catán’s Il Postino\, a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles\, and presented in two acts with one intermission. \nPresented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Il Postino is based on the novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skármeta\, as well as the film by Michael Radford. When exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda arrives on a tiny Italian island\, he receives so much fan mail that Mario is hired as his personal postman. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student\, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda\, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working class villagers. Il Postino will be presented by Opera Southwest in the Journal Theater at the NHCC on February 2\, 7 and 9\, 2020. \nOn January 21\, join poet Valerie Martinez for an in-depth discussion of the story of Il Postino and how it developed on its journey from the printed page to the big screen to the opera stage. Daniel Catán’s opera was inspired by the novel Ardiente Paciencia (Burning Patience)\, by Antonio Skarmeta\, and the Academy Award-nominated film adaptation\, Il Postino\, directed by Michael Radford.  Register here. \nValerie Martínez is the Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Valerie spent 23 years as a professor of literature at the college and university level\, and was Santa Fe’s second Poet Laureate. Meet artist Joe Stephenson who has a long history at the NHCC as a set and art museum exhibit designer. Stephenson has worked worldwide creating murals and public art. \nMuseum Scavenger Hunt & Bingo (Art Museum) \nEnjoy a self-guided tour in the museum and use one or more of the provided worksheets to enhance your experience. This activity is fun for all ages\, and encourages slow looking! \nPlay with Clay (Visual Arts Building) \nAll three museum exhibits contain ceramic pieces of art. Can you find them? Search the museum for inspiration and afterwards try your hand at creating a small sculpture or pot out of air dry clay that is yours to keep! \nThis Color is Bugging Me! (Visual Arts Building) \nCreate a small painting in this mini version of our Cochineal workshop. Participants will use ground up beetles and a variety of liquids to create paint that will be used on water color paper. Your creation is yours to keep! \nTeeny Piñata (Visual Arts Building) \nCan you make a Piñata that can fit in the palm of your hand? Inspired by one of NHCC’s most popular past exhibits\, “The Piñata Exhibit: Sure to be a Smash Hit!” and the work of the Little Piñata Maker\, participants will make a tiny piñata out of card stock and tissue paper that can be used to wear or hang in your car\, the artist’s original inspiration. \nTour the Albuquerque Journal Theater (Performing Arts Building) \nJoin this tour for an exciting glance at what takes place behing the scenes! Tours take place at 3:15 & 4:15. \nCarnival Mask Making (Wells Fargo Auditorium\, Performing Arts Building) \nCelebrate Carnaval in an interactive workshop with Sarah Dewey and Dahveed Torres.
