DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm Friday & Saturday\, 2:00 pm Sunday \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nFestival Ballet Albuquerque presents Sacred Journeys V featuring Robert Mirabal. \nClassical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in this reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance\, music\, and spoken word. Mirabal collaborates with Festival Ballet Albuquerque’s artistic director Patricia Dickinson Wells and with internationally renowned New York City Ballet dancer Jock Soto\, of Navajo and Puerto Rican descent. SUMMARY:Lensic 360: Los Lobos
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm (Door 6:30 pm) \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nLos Lobos at 50: It’s a matter of time. 50 years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work\, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running\, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. In between they’ve recorded 17 studio albums\, 7 live LPs\, 3 compilations\, 2 EPs\, 2 DVDs\, and contributed 40+ guest appearances on their friends’ recordings — all garnering 5 Grammys\, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction\, the ALMA Richie Valens Pioneer Award\, NEA and Hispanic Heritage Foundation Honors\, Congressional recognitions\, plus countless “Keys to the City” and “Los Lobos Day” celebrations. And those are just a few of the highlights. \nBeyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all\, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather\, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others\, working for peace and justice\, penning some of the most literate and important music of their time\, transforming the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope\, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. The young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul\, R&B\, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues\, jazz\, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos\, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots — nourished by Norteña and rancheras\, buoyed by bolero and cumbias\, soaring on the rhythms of son huasteco and son jarocho. Los Lobos have helped spread the rich diversity of cultures across every continent\, throughout the global community. Kids in Antwerp now know about Aztlán. Residents of Luxor and Ghana are crooning Lalo Guerrero. People from Laos and Bulgaria are belting “La Bamba” — all thanks to The Wolves as cultural ambassadors. Talk about a living legacy. Talk about a productive half century. And in the true rebel spirit\, they did it all on their own terms\, against formula. For the ages. To our delight. Quite simply\, they are one of the tightest\, one of the best\, one of the most prolific bands ever. And\, amazingly\, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it\, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo\, Louie Pérez\, Jr.\, Cesar Rosas\, Conrad Lozano\, Steve Berlin.” \n$64\, $74 and $89 *price includes a facility fee \nStarting on Monday\, May 1\, 2024 at 10:00 am (MTS) advance tickets will be available with a special PROMO CODE. You can enter your PROMO CODE at the top of this page in the top right corner. Tickets for the general public go on sale starting on Friday\, May 3\, 2024 at 10:00 am (MTS). \n*The event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm \nNational Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present Mercedes de Córdoba y Compañía in Sí\, Quiero \nConsidered one of the most powerful and authentic dancers of her generation\, Mercedes de Córdoba brings her celebratory personal work to the U.S. for the first time. Sí\, Quiero is a categorical answer that admits no doubt. An anachronistic oath\, and a forceful and necessary cry that vindicates commitment as a revolutionary act. This beautiful work reaffirms the act of wanting through an artistic discovery of what one is and what one feels. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque 37: Eduardo Guerrero: Bailar no es Solo Bailar
DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm \nNational Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present Eduardo Guerrero y Compañía in the U.S. premiere of Bailar no es Solo Bailar. \nThe incredible Cádiz-born Eduardo Guerrero brings Bailar no es Solo Bailar to the stage\, a work full of profound expression. Guerrero aims to dive into the basics in a humble\, simple way\, without distracting artifacts and observe what happens when we let the minimal invade us\, that innocent dance of the beginning returns to our body – what happens when we eliminate all the subterfuge to see how the body beats and honestly gives into itself to blur and melt. He returns to Flamenco as catharsis\, as a language to unburden the heart and let the soul free. To return to Flamenco as a collective communion and sacred meeting\, as a vehicle that brought us to the here and now and from which we will return to the before. \n$55\, $70\, $85\, $100 & $115\n* This price includes a $4/ticket NHCC fee

SUMMARY:Free Summer Series Film Screening: The First Rainbow Coalition (2019)
DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm: Food Trucks & Cash Bar\n7:00 pm: Screening\n8:00 pm: Director’s Talk & Q&A to immediately following screening. \nNHCC | Wells Fargo Auditorium \n \nJoin us for a panel discussion with Filmmaker Ray Santisteban and Black Panther activist Aaron Dixon. \nThe First Rainbow Coalition\, Directed & Produced by Ray Santisteban\, charts the history and legacy of a groundbreaking multi-ethnic coalition that rocked Chicago in the 1960s. Comprised of activists from the Black Panthers\, the Young Patriots (southern whites)\, and the Young Lords (a former Puerto Rican street gang)\, Chicago’s Rainbow Coalition (1969-1971) united poor Blacks\, Whites\, and Latinos to openly challenge police brutality and substandard housing in one of the most segregated cities in America. \nBridging past and present\, The First Rainbow Coalition examines the legacy of the Rainbow Coalition\, exploring how contemporary problems that displace the poor in urban areas\, such as gentrification and the relationship between the police and poor and minority communities\, are fundamentally linked to the defining issues around which the Rainbow Coalition was organized. A thought-provoking film that sparks new dialogue about the 1960s\, The First Rainbow Coalition provides an unparalleled platform for contemporary discussions on race and class in an increasingly divided United States. \nFree community event\, please let us know who will be attending below.

SUMMARY:Free Summer Series Film Screening: Street Heroines (2021)
DESCRIPTION:5:00 pm: Food Trucks & Cash Bar\n6:00 pm: Breaking Hearts\n7:00 pm: Screening\nDirector’s Talk & Q&A to follow immediately after screening. \nNHCC | Bank of America Theatre \n \nSTREET HEROINES  is an award-winning feature-length documentary celebrating the courage and creativity of women who despite their lack of recognition have been an integral part of the graffiti and street art movement since the beginning. With authentic vérité storytelling woven between an interview-driven narrative\, STREET HEROINES  juxtaposes the personal experiences of three emerging Latina artists from New York City\, Mexico City\, and São Paulo as they navigate a male-dominated subculture to establish artistic identities within chaotic urban landscapes. \nToofly\, born in Ecuador and raised in Queens\, NY\, is determined to use her art to help others and embarks on a journey that leads her back to Ecuador after establishing a unique friendship with the first female of graffiti\, Lady Pink. Fusca\, a talented painter who moved to Mexico City inspired by its embrace of muralism\, becomes dismayed by the machinations behind the urban art scene and is forced to reanalyze her passion. In the concrete jungle of São Paulo\, Brazil Magrela expresses her feelings on the complexities of being a woman through vibrant colors and radical imagery painted across city walls only to one day be confronted by the very authorities that make her feel unwanted in the public space. Combined with historical anecdotes from pioneering artists including Lady Pink\, Swoon\, Lady Aiko\, Nina Pandolfo and iconic graffiti photographer Martha Cooper\, among others\, Street Heroines is the first-of-its-kind documentary to capture the collective outcry of female street artists. \nFree community event\, please let us know how many will be attending below.
