Música del Corazón explores foundational genres of the romancero and cancionero\, from Medieval ballads to Revolutionary corridos\, Baroque and contemporary fandangos. SUMMARY:Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company: Xicano Power
DESCRIPTION:8:00 pm Friday\, 4:00 pm Saturday \nNational Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez\, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. The current concert season marks the performance’s first appearance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \n$48\, $58\, $68\, $78 & $88 w/ a $5 discount for Seniors\, Students w/ Id\, Children 12 yeas old and younger and NHCC Members \n \nThis powerful display of flamenco is framed around the poet Rudolfo “Corky” González’s seminal poem “Yo Soy Joaquín.” González wrote the poem in 1967 to express the struggle of a people and the need for a Chicano movement. Here\, the poem appears to express shared identities and deepen the company’s and audiences’ interpretation of these repertory pieces. In 2004\, just five years after Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company’s inception\, Israel Galván choreographed Xicano Power on the company. \nIn titling the work\, Galván chose a name representative of the people performing. By doing so\, Galván acknowledged the importance of the people doing the art. We have chosen Xicano Power for the title of this performance\, focusing again on the interpreters and the power that shapes who they are. Chicano identity and culture permeate the land and space that this company comes from. The choreographies presented in Xicano Power showcase flamenco’s incredible expressive range: explosive\, elegant\, raw\, delightful\, complex\, beautiful; each piece as unique as its creator. \nFor more information about our friends at the National Institute of Flamenco\, please\, click Here. \nXicano Power – Yjastros group (Photo credit: Rafael Manjavacas)

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Bluebeard’s Castle with Doctor Atomic
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 22\, 27 & 29\n2:00 pm Sundays\n7:30 pm Friday \nEnter Bluebeard’s Castle if you dare! \nJust in time for Halloween\, Opera Southwest presents a double bill of thrills and chills! First\, join us for Bartok’s chilling one-act opera\, Bluebeard’s Castle. Then\, dive into the psychological horror story of the Doctor Atomic Symphony\, based on the Doctor Atomic opera by John Adams. This symphony tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the first successful atom bomb. \n$22\, $42\, $63\, $85\, $105 with discounts for groups of 8 or more\, anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. \n \nFirst on the bill\, Bluebeard’s Castle\, the story of Judith\, the young new wife of the menacing Duke Bluebeard\, who unlocks the seven forbidden doors in her husband’s castle and is eventually confronted by the women he has already loved and murdered. \nThis production has us working with two senior set artists from Meow Wolf: Lance Ryan McGoldrick and David Cudney. In this symbolist opera\, each room is assigned a color. The two artists are working with the traditional themes while interpreting them using modern technology and their specialized skills. McGoldrick and Cudney have been collaborating for a decade and they’re bringing all their artistic experience to the scenic design of this production. They’re creating atmospheric effects\, sculptures\, and projections that will enhance the seven secret rooms as Judith insists on unlocking each door of her new husband’s castle. \nNext up\, the Doctor Atomic Symphony performed by the OSW opera orchestra with projections. In this atmospheric composition\, Adams presents highlights from the full opera\, with instrumental treatments of the story and themes. \n“With the incredible interest in Oppenheimer unleashed by this summer’s blockbuster movie\, Oppenheimer\, Opera Southwest decided to revisit the music of the popular new opera by John Adams\, Doctor Atomic\, by presenting the Doctor Atomic Symphony on the opening program of our 51st season\,” said Tony Zancanella\, OSW Executive Director.  “As a small & nimble company\, we are sometimes able to pivot programmatically to meet a broader cultural moment.” “There are all of these striking thematic and symbolic cross-connections between these works\, which delve deep into the psychology of their central subjects as they tackle dark and morally complex themes.” said Artistic Director Anthony Barrese. \nRun time: 2 hours 30 minutes\, including one intermission. \n*This event is a rental event\, not an NHCC production. SUMMARY:Fright Night Film Screening: Dracula
DESCRIPTION:10:30 pm \nRenfield\, a solicitor\, makes a journey into Transylvania via stagecoach. He mentions his destination\, Castle Dracula\, to the locals who react with alarm. They tell him Drácula is a vampire and when he doesn’t believe them\, one insists he wear a cross. When he arrives at the Castle\, the Count bids him welcome. After drinking drugged wine\, Renfield collapses\, still wearing the cross\, and is bitten. Aboard ship\, a now-enslaved Renfield laughs maniacally below as Drácula picks off the crew one by one. When the ship reaches England\, he is the only living person found. \nFree Community Event \nDirectors: George Melford | Adult Horror | 1931 (USA) | Run time: 104 min. | Not Rated: NR | Studio: Universal Pictures \n \nDrácula meets Dr. Seward and his family at the opera. Lucía is completely fascinated by him and that night becomes his victim. Professor Van Helsing is called in\, and he recognizes the danger for what it is. He also realizes that Dr. Seward’s patient Renfield is somehow tied up in events. But soon after meeting the Doctor’s new neighbor\, Van Helsing figures out that Drácula is a vampire—based on the fact that Drácula casts no reflection in the mirror. By now\, Seward’s daughter Eva is falling under his spell. To her horror\, she feels increasingly weak and also increasingly wild—at one point attacking her fiancé Juan. With Seward’s and Harker’s help\, Van Helsing seeks to trap Drácula\, who outwits them and escapes with Eva by seizing control of a nurse’s mind. They follow Renfield into Carfax Abbey—an act which ends with Drácula killing his slave by strangulation\, and then tossing him from a tall staircase. Deep in the catacombs under Carfax\, they find Drácula asleep and Eva still alive. Van Helsing drives a stake through the vampire’s heart\, and as Eva and Harker leave\, Van Helsing prays over Renfield’s body.

SUMMARY:Teatro Paraguas: United in Blood: The Revolutionary Music and Poetry of Chile
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm Friday & Saturday\n3:00 pm Sunday \nTeatro Paraguas and the NHCC present United in Blood: The Revolutionary Music and Poetry of Chile. United in Blood is a fully staged performance celebrating the artistic\, social\, and political vision of four of Chile’s most beloved musicians and poets: Pablo Neruda\, Victor Jara\, Violeta Parra\, and Gabriela Mistral. Though not all four knew each other\, several of them did\, and they are all intimately connected through their shared passions\, political sensibilities\, and deep concern for humanity. \nSongs and poems will be performed in the original Spanish\, with English translations either performed or projected above the stage. \n$27 w/ discounts for students\, seniors and NHCC members \n \nGabriela Mistral\, who in 1945 became the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature\, had a personal and lifelong influence on Pablo Neruda\, who won the Nobel Prize himself in 1971 and is widely considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Violeta Parra\, an amazingly versatile musician and visual artist\, reinvented Chilean folk music in the 1950s and 60s and\, similar to Mistral with Neruda\, had a profound influence on Victor Jara. Jara became known internationally in the 60s and 70s as a folk singer and songwriter and\, together with his friend Neruda\, was one of the main Chilean artist-activists associated with the election in 1970 of the socialist president Salvador Allende. \nIn addition to celebrating these artists\, United in Blood specifically commemorates the 50th anniversary of the September 11th\, 1973\, coup d’etat that ended Allende’s short presidency and resulted in Augusto Pinochet’s nearly 20-year military dictatorship\, as well as the deaths of thousands of dissidents\, Victor Jara and Pablo Neruda among them. \nThrough song\, poetry\, dance\, and instrumental music (including charango\, guitar and flute)\, the production explores roots\, love and loss\, the essential role of art and free expression in society and takes an impassioned stance against fascism and indifference in our time\, honoring Jara’s example that we must never stop working for our “right to live in peace.” \nThe ensemble includes Cristina Vigil\, Jeni Tincher\, Jojo Sena de Tarnoff\, Miranda Arteaga\, Monica Arteaga\, Paola Vengoechea Martini\, Roxanne Tapia\, Argos MacCallum\, Jonathan Harrell\, James Stake\, and Mario Reynolds on Charango (traditional Andean stringed instrument).

SUMMARY:Paul Mitchell Systems Presents: The Kingston Trio LIVE!
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nFans of legendary folk icons The Kingston Trio can rediscover their timeless music all over again! They’ll perform such timeless classics “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?” and “Tom Dooley.” \n$52\, $62 & $72 \nApproximate time of event: 120-140 mins with intermission. \n \n\nThe event is a rental event not an NHCC production. SUMMARY:National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation: Día de Salud y Matanza
DESCRIPTION:9:00 am \nDía de Salud\, while focusing on overall health and well-being\, also aims to celebrate and incorporate the influence of Hispanic culture and traditions. The event recognizes the unique health challenges and perspectives within the Hispanic community and seeks to provide culturally relevant information and resources. By infusing Hispanic influence into Día de Salud\, the health fair can effectively reach and resonate with the Hispanic community\, promoting a sense of cultural pride\, awareness\, and empowerment around health and well-being. \nFree Community Event\, no registration required. \n\nAdditionally\, we will be hosting a career expedition for students and those who aspire to pursue careers in the health professions. This unique opportunity allows individuals to learn about various professions\, explore pathways into their chosen fields and gain valuable insight into the realities and challenges of healthcare education and careers. They will have access to engaging panels\, workshops\, and one-on-one conversations with healthcare professionals\, education advisors\, and leaders in the industry. \nWe are excited to announce that alongside our health fair and career expedition\, we will be hosting a traditional matanza at the NHCC. The matanza is not only a celebration of Hispanic culture but also an opportunity to showcase how we can incorporate healthy eating habits into our rich culinary traditions. We will have matanza demonstrations\, where attendees can witness the traditional preparation techniques and learn about the nutritional aspects of the process. This experience will provide valuable insight into how we can maintain the authenticity of our cultural practices while making mindful choices that promote well-being. Join us for an engaging and enlightening event that combines the joy of tradition with the benefits of healthy eating.
