SUMMARY:OSW: NM Symphonic Chorus: Brahms – Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 15\, 2026\n2:00 pm \nOpera Southwest Presents: The New Mexico Symphonic Chorus \nBrahms – Requiem \nEin deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem)\nPresented in Spanish translation \nBrahms did not set a Latin mass. He called his great work “Ein deutsches Requiem—A German Requiem” – but wrote to a colleague that he would have preferred to call it “A Human Requiem.” \nHis intention was clear: this is music for the living\, not the dead. Not bound to any single dogma\, Brahms bypassed conventional liturgy to weave together scripture that speaks to sorrow\, love\, and release. Just three years after its premiere\, the work was performed in English with the composer’s support. \nIn that spirit of openness and consolation\, we present the Requiem in Spanish. \nFor more information on the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus and Opera Southwest please click HERE. \n$22\, $37\, $52\, $69 & $89 w/ discounts for anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. SUMMARY:OSW: NM Symphonic Chorus: Mozart – C Minor Mass K 427
DESCRIPTION:2:00 pm \nOpera Southwest Presents: The New Mexico Symphonic Chorus \nMozart – Mass in C Minor\, K. 427\nSymphony No. 40 in G Minor\, K. 550 \nTwo pillars of Mozart’s mature style: one sacred\, one symphonic. \nModeled on the grandeur of Bach’s Mass in B Minor and the Salzburg ceremonial tradition\, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor blends contrapuntal rigor with operatic brilliance. Though unfinished\, it stands among the most exalted sacred works of the Classical era. Paired with the storm-lit urgency of the G Minor Symphony\, this program reveals the expressive breadth of Mozart’s late style. SUMMARY:NHCC Fall Film Series: Plaza Catedral
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nThe NHCC Fall Film Series features Hispanic filmmakers that preserve our stories\, promote our experiences and advance the vast cultural identity of our gente. This film series continues with Plaza Catedral (2021) on Thursday\, Nov. 13. \nAlicia had a “perfect life” and lost it. Her six year old son died in an accident she feels she could have avoided. Her grief is plagued by guilt\, which has made her disassociate from society\, from married life\, and from herself. She now lives in the old quarter of Panamá\, a rich colonial enclave surrounded by Panamá’s poorest neighborhoods. There she meets Chief\, a street-smart 13 year old who takes care of cars in front of her apartment and insists on getting paid for his job. Alicia keeps a safe distance from him\, until one night Chief arrives at Alicia’s apartment bleeding from a gunshot wound\, and begs her for help. Reluctantly\, Alicia lets him in. What she could not imagine is that by opening the door to Chief\, she would open the door to an unforeseen emotional bond. Caring for Chief makes her feel connected to life again\, and it hurts. \nFree Community Event. Please register using the link below.

SUMMARY:Cine Magnifico: Una Sombra Oscilante
DESCRIPTION:4:15 pm \nInstituto Cervantes presents Cine Magnifico 2025\nUna Sombra Oscilante\nby Celeste Rojas Múgica \n \nHe develops and imagines a world inside a darkroom. His daughter weaves a dialogue inside it: about latent\, invented images. About the ways of resisting and navigating the darkness. \n“Una sombra oscilante” (An Oscillating Shadow) explores how the intimate and political weight of images can open spaces to reflect upon them as acts of resistance\, either because they are made despite the horror of their context or because they offer an imaginary vanishing point that might just set us free. \n2024 // 77 min. // Chile\, Argentina\, France // Documentary // Spanish with English subtitles \nView the Una Sombra Oscilante official trailer here:\n \nFree community event

SUMMARY:Opera Southwest: Dolores
DESCRIPTION:October 26\, 29\, 31 & November 2\, 2025\n2:00 pm Sundays\, 7:30 pm Wednesday & Friday \nNHCC | Albuquerque Journal Theatre \nMusic / Nicolás Lell Benavides\nLibretto / Marella Martin Koch \n1968. The Delano grape strike is dragging into its third year. Farmworkers in California are building solidarity that transcends race and\nlanguage. Bobby Kennedy is running for president. Tricky Dick is on the radio promising discipline. Dolores Huerta is holding the movement together with one hand. With the other\, she dials home\, again\, to say goodnight to children she hasn’t seen in weeks. \nShe’s not a symbol. Not yet.\nShe’s just doing the work. \nDolores is an opera that floats between the real and the imagined\, memory and nightmare. Composer Nicolás Lell Benavides and librettist Marella Martin Koch stitch history into something fragile and feverish. There are sacred chants\, electric guitar pulsations\, bossa nova hallucinations. \nLabor icon Dolores Huerta helped build a union out of dust and righteous anger. She walked the fields\, held the line\, made the calls. With César Chávez and Larry Itliong\, she shaped a movement that reached the ears of presidents but never lost sight of the people bent over the vines. The work didn’t stop. It never does. That’s the cost of believing another world is possible. \n¡SÍ SE PUEDE! \nCommissioned and Co-produced by Opera Southwest\, West Edge Opera and San Diego Opera\, presented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nPiano tuning and preparation are provided by Albuquerque Piano Services: albuquerque-piano-tuning.com\nRunning Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes including one intermission \nSUNG IN ENGLISH\n-English translations are projected above the stage for all operas- \n45 Minutes before curtain\, Opera Southwest offers our “Opera Insights” pre-opera talks. These take place in either Bank of America\nTheatre or Wells Fargo Auditorium\, accessible from the shared lobby with the Albuquerque Journal Theatre. \nFor more information on Opera Southwest please click HERE. \nEnhance your weeknight opera-going experience with Taste of Opera – a pre-show dinner and relaxed conversation with Opera Southwest artistic staff members on Wednesday\, October 29\, 2025. SUMMARY:NHCC Fall Film Series: I Dream in Another Language
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nThe NHCC Fall Film Series features Hispanic filmmakers that preserve our stories\, promote our experiences and advance the vast cultural identity of our gente. This film series continues with I Dream in Another Language (2017) on Thursday\, Oct. 9. \nA millenary language agonizes: Its last two speakers\, Evaristo and Isauro (70’s) had a quarrel 50 years ago and haven’t spoken to each other since. Martin\, a linguist\, will undertake the challenge of bringing the two old friends back together and convince them to talk again in order for him to be able to obtain a record of the language. Yet\, hidden in the past\, in the core of the jungle\, lies a secret hidden in the language that makes it difficult to believe that the heart of Zikril will beat again. (IMDB). \n“Poetic Mexican film raises philosophical questions about what is lost when a language and by extension\, our elders’ memory is allowed to fade away unpreserved.” (Variety) \nFree Community Event.
