Aliento: Carnaval 2017, School Day Event

10 am The NHCC’s annual celebration of Carnaval is a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance, engaging music, and beautiful costumes, featuring the band PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble and showcasing the Carnaval celebrations of Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil and New Orleans. 10 am Casa Flamenca and the NHCC present a school day event for Jesús Muñoz Flamenco in Red Note--original music and works by a cast of international dancers and musicians that explores dynamic, visionary movements in dance, music, and visual art inspired by cante flamenco. Red Note will take you on a journey through southern Spain--where soul meets dance--and through the evolution of flamenco's dance and music. This is a free event with registration. Film: Joan Baez 75th Birthday Celebration

7 pm Folk icon Joan Baez celebrated her 75th birthday in 2016, honoring her legendary 50-plus years in music with a career-spanning live performance at New York’s historic Beacon Theatre. Baez performed with fellow artists and friends including David Bromberg, David Crosby, Damien Rice, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Mavis Staples, Indigo Girls, Richard Thompson, Judy Collins, Nano Stern, and Paul Simon. 8 pm Casa Flamenca and the NHCC present Jesús Muñoz Flamenco in Red Note—borrowed from the tastefully symbolic "Blue Note Jazz Club" and exploring dynamic, visionary movements in dance, music, and visual art inspired by cante flamenco. Like jazz, flamenco has its roots in raw, intimate improvisation upon standard structures; it improvises through interpretations of the structures of cante jondo, or deep song. Film: Las constituyentes

7 pm A documentary about the 27 women who served in the Spanish legislature in 1977, promoting political change during Spain’s transition to democracy following the end of the Franco regime. Through their personal experiences, the film traces the history of women’s political involvement in Spain up to the present day, and includes a debate between these pioneering women, the “mothers of the constitution,” and women currently serving in the Spanish parliament. Festival Chispa: Latin Diva Series, Perla Batalla

7:30 pm Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Perla Batalla consistently earns critical acclaim for her extraordinary voice and culture-merging compositions. Formerly a Leonard Cohen back-up singer, the Los Angeles born vocalist launched her solo career with Cohen’s encouragement. Since then she’s recorded seven albums, been featured in films and television, and taken her unique sound on tour in some of the most prestigious venues around the world. The L.A.
