Domingos en Arte: Baracutanga

6 pm The award-winning New Mexico-based band Baracutanga explores and mixes the many danceable rhythms of South America. The eight-piece group, representing four different countries, arranges these rhythms in countless combinations, resulting in an exciting, iconic flavor that is all its own. Domingos en Arte, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music, AMP Concerts, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the NHCC’s Fountain Courtyard, enters its second season beginning in June. Film: Mondays in the Sun

7 pm Mondays in the Sun (Los lunes al sol) follows five unemployed shipworkers in the Spanish port city of Vigo. Down on their luck, they pass their time at La Naval, a bar that one of them opened after the shipyard closed, and face their futures in makeshift ways—encouraging each other to search for work, love, and the strength of hope for better days.  Santa, the unofficial leader and troublemaker of the group, dreams of one day going to Australia. Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Marco Flores, Entrar al Juego

8 pm Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque presents Compañía Marco Flores in Entrar al Juego. In this contemporary and very theatrical production, Flores manipulates space and experiments with time—slowing it down, speeding it up, and changing its direction to open up a temporary timeline from another world and trap people and objects in an alternative dimension. Flores’ first large-scale choreographic work, DeFlamencas, explored the female universe; his second creation, Tránsito, reflected his interest in looking within. From his beginnings as a dancer in other companies through the founding and maturation of his own company, Jesús Carmona has always aspired to have his creations serve as a showcase for Spanish culture. Festival Flamenco Internacional: New Mexico True Closing Celebration

4 pm to 7 pm Join us for the New Mexico True Closing Celebration for Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 2017. The closing celebration for the festival’s 30th year, sponsored by the National Institute of Flamenco, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New Mexico Tourism Department, will feature an exciting and diverse showcase of national and international flamenco student groups. 10 pm to 1 am Join us for Festival Flamenco: The After Party to close out Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque’s 30th year! After our final show, we will be having a party on the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Plaza Mayor, featuring the band Son Como Son. Domingos en Arte: Lone Piñon, Otilio Ruiz and Chuy Martinez

6 pm Acoustic trio Lone Piñon, from Santa Fe, celebrates the diversity of their region’s cultural roots. Reviving and updating the Chicano string band style that once flourished in New Mexico, they bring their consummate musicianship to northern New Mexican polka and chotis, Mexican huapango and son calentano, and classic borderlands conjunto. They are joined by veteran Albuquerque musicians Chuy Martínez, a guitarist, singer-songwriter, folklorist, and community cultural worker, and Otilio Ruiz, a virtuoso harpist, music teacher, and director of La Rondalla de Albuquerque.
