SUMMARY:Film: The Mamboniks
DESCRIPTION:2 pm \nLox and bagels meet salsa and congos in Peabody Award winner Lex Gillespie’s joyous and singular celebration of the Jewish love affair with Latin music and dance\, set in New York\, Havana\, Miami Beach\, and the Catskill Mountains. During the 1950s\, free-spirited\, mostly Jewish dancers from New York City fell head over heels for the mambo\, the hot dance from Cuba that became a worldwide sensation. Their love for Latin rhythms earned them a nickname: the “mamboniks.” Now retired\, yet still dancing in Florida\, a lovable\, somewhat zany collection of dancers from the ‘50s share a passion that age has not cooled. With colorful first-person accounts and an infectious Afro-Cuban soundtrack including Tito Puente\, Celia Cruz\, and “mambo king” Pérez Prado\, The Mamboniks explores a largely unexamined and exhilarating aspect of Jewish life and culture\, and a time when Jews\, Latinos\, and African-Americans met on the dance floor\, although America was racially segregated and anti-Semitism was commonplace. \n2018; Lex Gillespie; English; 89 minutes; not rated. \nFollowing the screening\, join us in the lobby outside the theatre to celebrate the film\, and the finale of the 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest\, with a “Cuban nosh” provided by La Fonda del Bosque and a cash bar provided by Pop Fizz. \nThe Jewish Community Center’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest features six recently released film premieres\, weaving a colorful tapestry of uniquely Jewish stories that come from around the world. The NHCC is partnering with the JCC on the screenings of Leona (July 20) and The Mamboniks (July 28). \nTickets are being sold by the Jewish Community Center; $10 in advance\, $12 at the door\, $55 for a full festival pass (6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest)

SUMMARY:Film: ¡Las Sandinistas!
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \n¡Las Sandinistas! documents a watershed moment in history\, when a group of Nicaraguan women shattered barriers to lead rebel troops in battle and reshape their country with landmark social reforms during the 1979 Sandinista Revolution and the ensuing U.S.-backed Contra War\, only to face renewed marginalization by their male peers once the wars ended. The film centers on the personal stories of Dora María Téllez\, the young medical student who became a key Sandinista general\, and four of her revolutionary allies. Now\, amid staggering levels of gender violence in Nicaragua\, these same women brave the streets once again to lead popular movements for equality and democracy. Presented in partnership with New Mexico PBS as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Jenny Murray. \n2018; Jenny Murray; English and Spanish with English subtitles; 60 minutes; not rated. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Edmar Castañeda
DESCRIPTION:6 pm \nDomingos en Arte\, the summer music and dance series presented by MelazaMusic and the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, enters its fourth season\, with concerts scheduled through August. We have invited a wide range of Latin artists for family-friendly summer Sundays that feature live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine in the NHCC’s enchanting Fountain Courtyard. \nOn July 21\, a partnership with Outpost Productions and the New Mexico Jazz Festival brings Colombian-born harp virtuoso Edmar Castañeda to the courtyard stage. Castañeda has forged a unique musical path\, bringing a wholly original voice to jazz and other genres\, and taking the world by storm with his virtuosity and command of his instrument. A consummate collaborator\, he has formed partnerships with Gonzalo Rubalcaba\, Wynton Marsalis\, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, among others\, and has performed at venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival\, and the 10th Annual World Harp Congress. “If you aren’t watching Castañeda in action\, you might think you’re listening to an ensemble rather than a solo player…. SUMMARY:Film: Leona
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nA universal tale of star-crossed lovers is given a uniquely Mexican twist in writer-director Isaac Cherem’s debut film. Ariela\, an independently-minded young artist living with her Syrian-Jewish family in a cloistered Jewish neighborhood in Mexico City\, finds herself torn between her family and a forbidden romance with a non-Jewish writer\, who shows her a world of possibilities beyond her sheltered life. As their feelings deepen\, Ariela must negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure\, religious values and traditions\, and her own burgeoning sentiment\, finding that there are no easy choices to be made. Bridging the divide between generations and cultures\, the film blends romantic comedy with an incisive feminist journey of discovery and self-determination. \n2018; Isaac Cherem; Spanish with English subtitles; 95 minutes; not rated (mature content advisory). \nThe Jewish Community Center’s 6th Annual ABQ Jewish Film Fest features six recently released film premieres\, weaving a colorful tapestry of uniquely Jewish stories that come from around the world. SUMMARY:Film: Con el viento/Facing the Wind
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nCon el viento honors the filmmaker’s grandparents’ village\, and the disappearance of its culture with their passing\, while examining the issue of uprooting in all its complexity. After 20 years away in Buenos Aires\, Mónica\, a dancer and choreographer\, receives a call that her father is dying and must return to the remote village in Burgos\, Spain\, where she was born. When she arrives\, her father has already passed away and her mother asks her to stay and help her sell the family home. SUMMARY:Film: Embrace of the Serpent/El abrazo de la serpiente
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nFilmed almost entirely in black and white in the Amazon jungle\, Embrace of the Serpent focuses on the relationship between an Amazonian shaman and two Western scientists over the course of 40 years\, and was inspired by the travel journals\, written decades apart\, of two explorers who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of a sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic plant. In respecting spirituality of place and rules of nature handed down through centuries\, it attains\, in addition to its extraordinary visual beauty\, what has been described as “mystical higher ground.” The third film by director Ciro Guerra\, Embrace of the Serpent is the first Colombian film ever to be nominated for an Academy Award\, for Best Foreign Language Film. SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Manuel Liñán\, ¡VIVA!
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Manuel Liñán in ¡VIVA!\, a song to the freedom of movement\, where the feminine essence is embraced through the masculine body\, where gender roles\, in a codified world like that of flamenco\, are broken with joy and enjoyment\, creating new terrains that\, although unexplored\, are not distant…. \n!VIVA! celebrates movement through the character of the female dancer. In a celebratory key\, Liñán proposes the plurality of the dance\, the different forms\, and the singularity of each form. And he does it with six bailaores-bailarines\, who are in charge of exploring and diving into this fascinating universe of the feminine\, seen from the masculine\, thus exposing these two identities which are both part of our own nature. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Alburquerque: Compañía Olga Pericet\, La Espina
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Alburquerque presents Compañía Olga Pericet in La Espina que Quiso Ser Flor o La Flor que Soñó la Bailaora. From award-winning dancer Olga Pericet\, Espina encompasses a personal journey through dance that comes from memory\, wounds\, past kisses\, and time\, where the real and the oneiric melt in a single space-time: the interior. Espina’s language delves into the roots of the unknown; sows new things; creates a universe where feminine and masculine\, humorous and dramatic fit in equal parts; and encounters human lights and shadows. A gallery of dramatic games where the woman always appears powerful\, a miscellany of sculpted images\, where space is traversed\, between beauty and ugliness\, joy and bitterness\, seclusion and sensuality\, youth and decrepitude\, all framed in a future of rhythms that move in a palo flamenco and its opposite. \n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85 \nThank you to our Performing Arts Season Sponsors Heritage Hotels and Resorts\, the Albuquerque Journal and Southwest Airlines!

SUMMARY:Film: Zoot Suit
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nIn Zoot Suit\, Luis Valdez weaves a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the subsequent\, racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles.  The trial followed the death of José Díaz\, found unconscious near the “Sleepy Lagoon” reservoir in 1942\, and resulted in the conviction\, despite insufficient evidence\, of several young Latinos charged with complicity in his murder. The fears and hostilities aroused by its coverage pitted servicemen stationed in Southern California\, along with white civilians\, against Mexican American and other minority youths. The white antagonists attacked and stripped teenagers and youths who wore zoot suits\, with their long jackets and pegged pants\, ostensibly because they considered the outfits\, which utilized a considerable amount of fabric\, unpatriotic during a time when rationing of fabric was required for the war effort.  Set in the barrios of Los Angeles\, the film features music by Daniel Valdez and Lalo Guerrero\, the “father of Chicano music.” El Pachuco\, an idealized Zoot Suiter\, serves as narrator as well as the conscience of Henry Reyna\, a character inspired by real-life defendant Hank Leyvas. The convictions obtained as a result of the murder trial were reversed on appeal in 1944. Presented as part of the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series. \n1981; Luis Valdez; English; 103 minutes; rated R. \nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show
