SUMMARY:Film: The Search for General Tso
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nAugust screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series conclude Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. This six-week series is a project of City Lore\, a cultural center for the arts and humanities based in New York City. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of NEH’s Community Conversations initiative\, and features documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions designed to encourage an informed discussion of immigration issues against the backdrop of our immigration history. \nThe National Hispanic Cultural Center is one of 24 organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Becoming American project. The scholar/moderator for the screenings and discussions at the Center is Dr. Gabriel Sanchez\, Professor of Political Science at the University of New Mexico. The theme for Unit Six\, presented on August 23\, is “Immigration and Popular Culture.” \nAs much an immigration history as a culinary detective story\, this ebullient documentary uses the ubiquitous Americanized dish\, General Tso’s Chicken\, as a lens onto a larger story of immigration\, adaptation\, and innovation to American popular culture. Early on\, the film poses the question\, “If Chinese Americans comprise only 1% of the U.S. population\, why are there Chinese restaurants in almost every city across America?” The filmmakers seek the answer in a journey through the Chinese American experience from the Gold Rush and the building of the railroads to the age of Panda Express. On-air historians\, chefs\, writers\, and enthusiasts provide accounts of the history of Chinese migration to America; the discriminatory 1880s Chinese Exclusion Act that forced emigrants out of the labor market and into small business ownership; the modification of “exotic” Chinese cuisine for American tastes; and the role of Chinese American community organizations in the dissemination of restaurants to the far corners of the nation to avoid competition and discrimination on the West Coast.\n2014; Ian Cheney; English; 57 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

They have twice been featured on NPR’s Alt Latino\, twice been named winners in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition\, been awarded 11 NM Music Awards and have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music. This 9-piece Latin music powerhouse seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with elements of Rock\, Salsa\, Jazz and Cumbia\, creating an original sound that is unmistakably Nosotros. But M.E. Their American-born and acculturated daughters have other ideas altogether. The conflict between the first generation’s values — attachment to their homeland\, discipline and strong work ethic\, clarity of goals and emphasis on family – and the independent outlook of their three girls form the moving and often humorous dramatic spine of the film.\n2001; Aaron Matthews; English; 62 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Domingos en Arte: Changüi Majadero
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nPlus: Inside Songwriting workshop with Changüí Majadero at 3:00 pm. More information here.  \nPlaying Cuban roots music out of East Los Angeles\, Changüí Majadero is a blazing five-piece band that has honed a deeply informed and highly personal take on changüí\, a surging Afro-Cuban musical tradition that took shape in the late 19th century on the eastern side of the island around Guantanamo. It’s one of the foundational styles that gave birth to son\, salsa and timba\, and in the hands of Changüí Majadero the music feels as fresh and intoxicating as a stiff shot of rum. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Gabriel García\, an expert on Cuban tres guitar\, the band brings Cuba’s country blues to new ears. \n  \nDomingos en Arte\, a summer music and dance series presented by Melaza Music\, AMP Concerts\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center is a family-friendly summer event on Sundays in NHCC’s charming Fountain Courtyard that features live music\, drinks\, and delicious Latin cuisine. \nAdvance $13\, Day of Show $18 \n     Thank you to our Domingos en Arte media sponsor Telemundo 2 Kasa! \n \n\nDomingos en Arte is part of New Mexico Culture Squared (NMC2)\, a NM Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) project to build and manage partnerships between DCA institutions and cultural organizations that will enhance the impact\, effectiveness\, attendance\, and visitor experience of exhibits and programs of DCA entities. SUMMARY:Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto and Baracutanga
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLos Gaiteros de San Jacinto\, a traditional folkloric cumbia group from Colombia’s Caribbean region\, has been active since 1940. Their music preserves the traditional rhythms and sounds that are the product of a mixture of Indigenous\, Spanish\, and Afro-Colombian heritage. Dating back at least to the time of Bolivar\, gaitero music is played on two flutes (gaitas) and a maraca\, both of Indigenous origin\, and drums of African origin\, through the descendants of the many African slaves who passed through the country’s Caribbean coast. The group’s founder\, Antonio “Toño” Fernández\, is credited with paving the way for modern cumbia’s enormous popularity throughout the Americas by being the first to successfully put words to gaitero music. The group is currently headed by four of the original members\, who perform with a new generation of gaiteros. Thanks in large part to them\, gaitero music has become one of the most influential traditional styles in Colombian popular music today. \nBaracutanga\, a New Mexico-based seven-piece band representing four different countries (Bolivia\, Ecuador\, Peru\, and the U.S.)\, prides itself on arranging traditional South American rhythms in new and interesting ways\, such as mixing huayño and cumbia with Middle Eastern darbuka\, or Afro-Cuban batá and Afro-Peruvian festejo with Andean zampoñas\, among other combinations. This kind of experimentation\, blending ancestral traditions with a modern sensibility\, results in an exciting\, distinctive Latin flavor that is all its own. Lyrically and musically\, Baracutanga proposes to build bridges between the south and north\, finding common ground in creating songs that cross linguistic and cultural barriers and promoting cultural experiences that empower Latinos with a message of self-affirmation. Baracutanga will be celebrating the release of their latest single and video “Cuida Tus Espaldas.\n$22\, $27 w/ $2 off for NHCC Members

SUMMARY:Remember the Time
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nMusic has always been an integral part of the history of Barelas\, and many of New Mexico’s well-known musicians have come from this community. In 2012\, the NHCC partnered with the Barelas Coffee House to present the Rock ‘n’ Soul Show and Revue\, then in its seventh year.  This event\, showcasing great rock\, soul\, R&B and New Mexico rancherita tunes from the 1960s through the 1980s\, recreated the touring shows performed in legendary Albuquerque venues during those years and provided a forum for the reunion of some of the city’s finest musicians from that era. In 2014 the Barelas Coffee House presented Oh What A Night\, and in 2015 Cruizin’ Central\, to sold-out houses; these were unique opportunities for family and friends to come together and listen\, sing along\, and dance to music from the 1950s through the 1980s. In 2016 and 2017\, the first and second Remember the Time dance concerts brought back memories of happy times at venues such as the Civic Auditorium\, Leo’s La Roc\, and the Far West. This year’s concert\, focusing on more recent decades\, once again celebrates life\, love\, and music at its best with great Albuquerque musicians who have been entertaining New Mexico audiences over the years.  Featured bands are Picoso\, Fat City\, and Soul Divine\, three dynamic local dance bands with dedicated fan bases. \nOpened in 1978 as a precursor to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood\, the Barelas Coffee House is itself an iconic Albuquerque venue and a popular local meeting place as well as a tourist attraction.  The NHCC is once again entering into a presenting partnership with the Barelas Coffee House\, through owner Michael Anthony Gonzales\, for the 3rd annual Remember the Time dance concert.\n$27 w/ $2 off for NHCC members

SUMMARY:Film: New York: A Documentary Film and The Jewish Americans
DESCRIPTION:7 pm \nJune screenings in the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series initiate Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on our Immigration Experience. The theme for Unit One\, presented on June 14\, is “The Century of Immigration.” \nEpisode 4\, “The Power and the People\,” of New York: A Documentary Film examines the great wave of immigration that began in the late 19th century\, tripled New York’s population\, and transformed the city and the nation. On camera\, renowned historians like David McCullough and writers like Pete Hamill describe the new tide of humanity from southern and eastern Europe—Italians\, Poles\, Turks\, Hungarians\, Ukrainians\, Greeks—their reasons for migrating\, their passage through Ellis Island\, their life on the Lower East Side\, and their role in transforming America into an industrial nation.\n2004; directed by Ric Burns; 30 minutes; English; not rated. \nEpisode 2\, “A World of Their Own\,” from the award-winning series The Jewish Americans explores in depth the story of one of the groups that made up the great wave of immigration described above. Fleeing poverty and oppression in Eastern Europe\, over two million Jews flooded into America\, drawn by the promise of religious freedom and economic opportunity. Many migrated across the U.S.\, but the majority created a new life in Manhattan’s slums. Struggling to adapt their traditions to their new life\, they were aided by new ethnic institutions such as The Forward\, a newspaper which devoted columns to teaching newcomers American mores\, in often unintentionally humorous ways.\n2008; directed by David Grubin; English; 30 minutes; not rated.\nFree ticketed event; tickets available one hour before show

SUMMARY:Festival Flamenco Internacional: Compañía Isabel Bayón Dju Dju
DESCRIPTION:8 pm \nFestival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque 31 presents Compañía Isabel Bayón’s Dju Dju\, an Israel Galván creation for Isabel Bayón. \nIn an extraordinary collaboration\, avant-garde choreographer and dancer Israel Galván directs classical dancer Isabel Bayón as she reinvents herself\, exploring the demons and superstitions of the flamenco world along with her husband\, guitarist Jesús Torres\, and dancers Alicia Márquez and Nieves Casablanca. “Torres recites a litany of her superstitions; Bayón crosses herself\, or shoos off bad spirits even as she’s willfully stomping on glass. The music veers from eerie lullabies to full church-organ portentousness…. Dju Dju works ultimately because it draws on qualities close to flamenco’s heart: wayward rhythms\, unresolved dissonances\, irrational passions\, the summoning of hidden forces.” (Sanjoy Roy\, The Guardian) \nBorn in Seville\, Isabel Bayón has performed at numerous national and international festivals\, and formed her own company in 2001\, creating a series of award-winning shows. She is also a choreographer for the Spanish National Ballet and the Andalusian Dance Company\, among others\, and a teacher at the María de Ávila Higher Dance Conservatory in Madrid. She received the National Dance Award in 2013.\n$40\, $50\, $70\, $85
