SUMMARY:AfroMundo Festival: Together We Heal: A Community Healing Circle
DESCRIPTION:2:00 – 4:00 pm \nNHCC | Salon Ortega \nSacred Spring Reiki Collective will lead a healing circle for community members and organizers at the 2025 AfroMundo Festival: Troubled Territories—The Will to Heal.  This session will bring people together to heal in community; reminding us that we are all connected and are stronger and wiser together. We don’t have to face our fears or problems alone.  Communally\, we can overcome great challenges. Together We Heal will help to calm the mind through the practice of intentional breathing\, gentle movement\, and reiki energy healing so that we can tap into the deep well of ancestral wisdom we each carry within and thus access our inner resources and gifts. \nReiki practitioners and community healers will join efforts to create a sanctuary of safety and calmness in which participants can take a break to relax and renew. We will open the circle with a gently guided QiGong/Yoga flow to get into our bodies\, followed by Reiki Practitioners moving around the circle sharing reiki energy through their hands\, which are placed gently on your head\, shoulders and heart area to help you attain a deep state of relaxation. During the reiki healing we will offer a guided meditation and sound bath. We will close the circle with time to reflect and share your experience. The total time in the healing circle is 120 minutes. \n* The format of this session is inspired by Freedom to Heal\, a healing program that many groups of people have experienced throughout the years and in different community settings. In this group different healing modalities are used to create a community space of safety and healing. Participants in these circles report having received great benefits by healing together with other community members. \nFree community event. Limited availability

SUMMARY:Student Matinee: Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words (Not Public)
DESCRIPTION:10:00 am \nThe Center invites middle and high school students to attend a special free matinee performance of Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words! NHCC requires one chaperone or school staff member for every 15 students at school performances. Limited bus funding for free performances and behind the scenes experiences available — please contact alejandrina.padilla@dca.nm.gov for availability and information. \n*** THIS IS NOT A PUBLIC PERFORMANCE*** \nAbout the show: NHCC and our friends and partners at the Vortex Theatre invite you to experience a captivating original play adapted from Margarita Engle’s award-winning young adult novel in verse. Set in 1870s Cuba\, this powerful story delves into the complexities of racial\, ethnic\, linguistic\, and national identities. Through dynamic elements of dance\, puppetry\, and music\, the play explores the historical forces—diaspora\, colonialism\, immigration\, and the transatlantic slave trade—that have shaped Hispanic/Latine identity.

DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm MST\nAll the films can be seen in the link below:\nhttps://vimeo.com/showcase/la-mirada-tabu \nÁlvaro G. Company and Meka Ribera humorously present us with a moral dilemma in which parents confront their love for their daughter and the novel options of bioethics. It is one of the most transgressive works that have come to the festival La Mirada Tabú\, not only because of its subject matter\, but also because it gives voice to thoughts that many parents have had at some point and would never confess. \nSynopsis: When they are born they are beautiful\, almost perfect. But they grow up so fast… I wish there was a way to enjoy that unrepeatable age forever. Petit Toujour combines the latest advances in gene therapy and selective hormone blockade to extend your time with the most beautiful thing you have in the world\, your baby. This is a very black comedy that places a serial killer at the center of a narrative with social undertones that breaks the fourth wall and invites us to ask ourselves about our own taboos. \nSynopsis: Monica is a normal woman with a normal life in a normal place in any of these modern times. However\, one day\, because of an unimportant detail that could have been solved as any other previous disagreement\, she kills her husband. DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm Fridays & Saturdays\n1:00 pm Sundays\n*Thursday\, April 3rd at 7:30 pm is a special preview/community night \nNHCC | Wells Fargo Auditorium \nThe NHCC and our friends and partners at the Vortex Theatre invite you to experience a captivating original play adapted from Margarita Engle’s award-winning young adult novel in verse\, Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words. \nSet in 1870s Cuba\, this powerful story delves into the complexities of racial\, ethnic\, linguistic\, and national identities. Through dynamic elements of dance\, puppetry\, and music\, the play explores the historical forces—diaspora\, colonialism\, immigration\, and the transatlantic slave trade—that have shaped Hispanic/Latine identity. \nLocal playwright Patricia Crespín brings the story to life\, centering the historical figure Antonio Chuffat\, a young man of Chinese\, African\, and Cuban descent. Featuring Clay Hilley & Sara Duchovnay \nClose out 2024 and begin 2025 with featured performers tenor Clay Hilley and soprano Sara Duchovnay. Clay Hilley makes an exciting return to Opera Southwest after his stunning portrayal of Radamès in “Aida” back in 2015. Of her 2019 role debut as Nedda in Pagliacci with Opera Roanoke\, the Roanoke Times praised her “nuanced portrait of an unhappy woman” and “her high notes [which] rang out with ease at the swelling climaxes in both her first act aria and in her love duet with Silvio.”  \nAccompanying our singers are the Opera Southwest Orchestra\, the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus\, and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony.
