SUMMARY:Shoes for the Santo Niño
DESCRIPTION:Friday at 7 pm\nSaturday at 2 pm \nShoes for the Santo Niño is the story of Julianita\, the youngest of eleven children\, who slips out of her home one evening to take a pair of “practical” shoes that she has made to the Santo Niño de Atocha. When she enters the church\, the Santo Niño and the saints come to life\, and Julianita is whisked off into an evening of mystery\, magic\, and miracles. \nThis joyous piece by the Santa Fe Opera depicts the important role of the Santo Niño de Atocha as part of the traditional cultural fabric of northern New Mexico in both Hispanic and Native American families. The tale of Julianita and the Santo Niño\, passed down from generation to generation\, is adapted from the charming children’s story by Peggy Pond Church. The Santo Niño is known as an advocate for healing\, primarily of children\, and many believe that he wears the shoes left by pilgrims who visit his shrines to walk abroad and heal sick children while they sleep. \nPhoto by Brandon Soder.\n$7 for everyone

SUMMARY:Festival Chispa Presents: Inti-Illimani
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \n6:30-7:00 pm: Join Inti-Illimani before the concert begins in the Bank of America Theatre for a community dialogue! Come meet the band and here them talk about their music. \nFounded in 1967 by students at Santiago’s Universidad Técnica del Estado\, Inti-Illimani has performed worldwide for hundreds of thousands of fans\, collaborated with legendary artists\, earned awards and honors for activism as well as musicianship\, and produced one of Latin America’s richest discographies. On tour during the 1973 military coup in Chile\, they remained in Italy in de facto exile until 1988\, touring Chile days after they were no longer banned from the country and returning permanently in 1990. The time in Europe added elements of other musical genres to their music\, creating a fusion of folk/Latin/contemporary classical/avant-garde/world music played on over 30 instruments. They have lectured extensively on Latin American folk/indigenous music\, culture\, and social change\, and founded and teach at an arts-centric school in one of Santiago’s poorest neighborhoods. Still including one of the original founders\, the group celebrates 50 years of performing music grounded in their beloved Chile\, yet continuing to reach across time\, space\, and nations. More than a musical ensemble\, they have become a cultural location\, expressing the essence of the Latin American ethnomusical experience. Their current tour also promotes an album recorded in homage to the legendary Violeta Parra for her centenary. \nFestival Chispa Presents\, a partnership with Avokado Artists\, is a series that showcases some of the finest and most innovative groups\, both legendary and up-and-coming\, that the Latino world has to offer. Fusing various musical genres\, cultures\, and traditions\, this dynamic series breaks down musical boundaries and leaves the audience wanting more!\n$22\, $27 w/ $2 off for Students & Seniors\, $3 off for NHCC Members

Latino Film Festival\nInstituto Cervantes is proud to present ¡Cine Magnífico! to the New Mexico community once again. \nThis festival has become an important event in our community – it marks a transition time between summer and autumn\, when families are returning to the routine of the school year. These films provide inspiration as the aroma of roasting green chile lofts into the late summer air. They remind us to savor the most subtle\, elegant\, and profound aspects of our daily lives here in our beautiful New Mexico communities\, and to enjoy our time at the cinema. \nOpening night has evolved into a lively community event on South 4th Street & Bridge Street in the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with its iconic vaulted ceilings and stunning architecture. Families\, academics\, students\, filmmakers\, artists\, community leaders\, and so many others mingle before the theatre opens\, with beverages and food from our community’s finest restaurants and cameras flashing. It has truly evolved into a beautiful event. \nThis year\, our team has selected a lineup of films which perfectly illustrate enriching points of view about emerging issues and topics that shape the current Hispanic-Latino cultures and landscapes\, both here in New Mexico and beyond. This year’s screenings will take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, UNM\, and the Guild Cinema. Central themes include immigration and children’s film\, as well as New Mexico filmmaking. This year’s festival features films from Spain\, Cuba\, Argentina\, Honduras\, Chile\, Mexico\, Venezuela\, Brazil\, and the United States. \n¡Cine Magnífico!’s vision is to present the newest films by and about Latinos to promote our culture through film and enrich our local art community. We showcase a diverse set of films\, from award-winning to local and up-and-coming filmmakers. We also offer year-round film programming. \nThank you for supporting ¡Cine Magnífico! Enjoy the shows! \nFor more information please go to the ¡Cine Magnífico! website HERE or call the Instituto Cervantes at 505-724-4777
