SUMMARY:Los Pleneros de la 21
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nLos Pleneros de la 21 (“LP21”)\, an Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena ensemble featuring musicians\, dancers\, and artisans\, returns to New Mexico for a four-day National Performance Network (NPN) residency\, Redobles de Cultura Boricua\, which will include workshops and other activities as well as the group’s concert at the NHCC.  LP21’s complex\, multi-part vocal harmonies\, set to the rhythms of hand-held plena drums and barrel-shaped bomba drums\, resurrect the African-rooted bomba and plena musical styles of Puerto Rico. Billboard praised the band for its “exhilaratingly deep Latino explorations of Afro-Caribbean grooves\,” and the New York Times wrote\, “the melodies are gorgeous and the tunes perfectly arranged\, precise rhythms making way for singing or a drum section.” LP21 is also a non-profit community-based organization\, founded in 1983 by National Heritage Fellow Juan Gutiérrez and located in the heart of El Barrio (NYC’s Spanish Harlem); the group’s mission is to “unite community building and cultural equity through music.” Members make traditional music programming accessible to the public\, expose inner city youth and others to the cultural heritage of Puerto Rico while encouraging their active participation in these traditions\, and perform a repertoire of work embedded in the rich tradition of Puerto Rican folk music for audiences everywhere. Presented in partnership with Outpost Productions.\n$35\, $32 w/ $3 discount for students & seniors and $5 discount for Outpost & NHCC members

SUMMARY:¡Cine Magnífico! Albuquerque's Latino Film Festival 2017
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 5th annual\n ¡Cine Magnífico! Latino Film Festival\nInstituto Cervantes is proud to present ¡Cine Magnífico! to the New Mexico community once again. \nThis festival has become an important event in our community – it marks a transition time between summer and autumn\, when families are returning to the routine of the school year. These films provide inspiration as the aroma of roasting green chile lofts into the late summer air. They remind us to savor the most subtle\, elegant\, and profound aspects of our daily lives here in our beautiful New Mexico communities\, and to enjoy our time at the cinema. \nOpening night has evolved into a lively community event on South 4th Street & Bridge Street in the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center\, with its iconic vaulted ceilings and stunning architecture. Families\, academics\, students\, filmmakers\, artists\, community leaders\, and so many others mingle before the theatre opens\, with beverages and food from our community’s finest restaurants and cameras flashing. It has truly evolved into a beautiful event. \nThis year\, our team has selected a lineup of films which perfectly illustrate enriching points of view about emerging issues and topics that shape the current Hispanic-Latino cultures and landscapes\, both here in New Mexico and beyond. This year’s screenings will take place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, UNM\, and the Guild Cinema. Central themes include immigration and children’s film\, as well as New Mexico filmmaking. This year’s festival features films from Spain\, Cuba\, Argentina\, Honduras\, Chile\, Mexico\, Venezuela\, Brazil\, and the United States. \n¡Cine Magnífico!’s vision is to present the newest films by and about Latinos to promote our culture through film and enrich our local art community. We showcase a diverse set of films\, from award-winning to local and up-and-coming filmmakers. We also offer year-round film programming. \nThank you for supporting ¡Cine Magnífico! Enjoy the shows! \nFor more information please go to the ¡Cine Magnífico! website HERE or call the Instituto Cervantes at 505-724-4777

Her work encompasses the classic rhythms and diverse musical make-up of the country she grew up in\, while reaching outward to the world she has encountered in her recent travels. \nDaymé Arocena has been compared to both Celia Cruz and Aretha Franklin\, and her debut album\, Nueva Era\, made National Public Radio’s list of 50 favorite albums of 2015. Her latest release\, Cubafonía\, is already garnering rave reviews around the world. \nFestival Chispa Presents\, a partnership with Avokado Artists\, is a series that showcases some of the finest and most innovative groups\, both legendary and up-and-coming\, that the Latino world has to offer. SUMMARY:AMP Concerts Presents Over the Rhine (Rental)
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm \nAfter more than 20 years of making music\, it’s obvious that Ohio duo Over The Rhine is in it for the long haul. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist\, named to Paste magazine’s list of 100 Best Living Songwriters\, began performing together in 1990 in local Cincinnati clubs and gathering places. Their first show drew about 20 people\, most of them friends. But even from this somewhat humble beginning\, audiences knew that they had stumbled onto something special.  Treating their listeners like family\, Karin and Linford kept them close with simple candle-lit stages and playful handwritten newsletters\, but it was the band’s songs above all that continued to draw in more and more committed fans.  Karin’s voice\, full of longing and love\, seeming to pierce the soul\, has become the unmistakable focal point of Over The Rhine’s richly spiritual music.\n$27 \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event. SUMMARY:La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence
DESCRIPTION:6 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) \nLa Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness\, understanding\, and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music\, band member make-up\, and instruments. Mariachi groups\, like orchestras\, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments\, such as the guitarrón\, are unique to this form of music. Performances will demonstrate various styles within the genre\, including son\, huapango\, and ranchera. \nThere will also be a demonstration of the beautiful teaching exchange between “master instructor” and student in violin\, guitar\, and voice. This exercise demonstrates the great gift of the MSA Workshop offered through Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque\, because it is very rare in any musical genre that iconic master musicians interact with and teach youthful students. It would be the equivalent\, in rock and roll\, of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards teaching voice and guitar to an everyday music student. \nFor more information\, please check out the Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque website: www.mariachispectacular.com.\nFree community event
