K-12 Educator’s Workshop: Día de los Muertos: Papel Picado, Shrines, and Sugar Skulls
Domenici Education Building 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM5 pm to 8 pm Join the UNM Latin American & Iberian Institute and the National Hispanic Cultural Center for a free professional development workshop for K-12 educators focused on Día de los Muertos. Led by artist and educator Arturo Olivas, participants will learn the history behind papel picado, shrines, and sugar skulls, before delving into hands-on instruction in all three elements. Domenici Education Building 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM10:30 am to 12:30 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center is pleased to offer children’s programming on the first Saturday morning of every month. This is a fun and engaging docent and artist-led family program. Families (limited to 25 participants) get a 30-minute museum tour focused on an art form, source inspiration, artist or type of material. Following the tour, the whole family can create their own artwork in the Pete V. Domenici Education Building Messy Classroom. A great morning of art-making for children of all ages and (more...)

NHCC-BOD-January-2020-MeetingBy Rudolfo Anaya 10 am Rudolfo Anaya, acknowledged as the foremost author of New Mexican Hispanic culture and folkways and acclaimed as the founder of modern Chicano literature, has written over 40 books and plays; this is his first play. His exploration of the Mesoamerican legend of La Llorona, the “Wailing Woman,” gives both historic and human depth to the well-known myth. Presented in partnership with Teatro Nuevo México. Awards Ceremony: Cervantes Drawing Contest for Students
Domenici Education Building 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM3 pm to 4 pm Instituto Cervantes, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and the Education Office-Embassy of Spain present the awards for a student drawing contest to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. Students in three age categories, ages 6-8, 9-11, and 12-15 were invited to submit original drawings depicting any subject matter relating to either Don Quixote or Miguel de Cervantes.
