SUMMARY:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era
DESCRIPTION:Incubation: Art Created in the COVID-19 Era\, is an online exhibit of artwork created by Albuquerque High School students under the direction of four teachers. The work was created at the end of the spring semester\, after schools closed across New Mexico in response to the COVID-19 crisis. \n \nPrior to school closures and the closure of the NHCC campus\, the AHS students and teachers were scheduled to hang an exhibit in the Pete Domenici Education Building on the NHCC. The students were working on completely different projects at that time and what you see here reflects their transition into online art instruction and the students’ reflections on this dramatic and sudden shift. Many artworks were submitted for this online exhibit and what is presented here is just a small sampling of the creativity that has taken place since March.\, \nDuring this time\, the teachers focused intently on how to continue supporting their students through these new challenges. There were many emotions about how the school year ended so abruptly and about the continued need for social distancing. Yet\, something magical also happened. The students created so much artwork in their homes that it needed to be shared and shown to others. The artwork demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity that is inspiring. There was so much artwork\, that we were only able to show a portion of it. \nIMPORTANT message to all the students!  All of the art created\, whether shown here or not\, is amazing! Please\, don’t stop creating. You are teaching the rest of the world about resilience and resourcefulness. \nTo all the teachers\, thank you! You all have been challenged in many ways. Your dedication to your students is evident in the honesty of your statements and the varied projects shown. You have not only taught craftsmanship but life skills. Through the lengthy and complicated process of transitioning to an online exhibit\, it is evident that your capacity for care and hard work is unwavering. Again\, thank you. \nPlease click HERE and leave a comment for Teachers\, Artists or NHCC staff\, about this exhibit.

SUMMARY:Herrera Internship Endowment
DESCRIPTION:The Herrera Internship Endowment was created by Dr. Denise Herrera to honor her parents (Yolanda and Fred Herrera) and grandparents (Reyna and Mariano Herrera)\, who did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education. As a native New Mexican\, Dr. Herrera has dedicated much of her academic and professional career to the advancement of underrepresented groups in higher education. As a participant in several diversity programs herself\, Dr. Herrera has mentored students from elementary through postdoctoral levels. This internship is intended to honor that tradition of “lifting others while we climb” and paying it forward. The Herrera Internship provides scholarships to Hispanic female students who complete an internship with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. \nWe are currently accepting applications for the Herrera Internship! The internship will begin in January 2021. Application deadline is October 31\, 2020. \nClick HERE for additional eligibility information and application instructions. Contact annette.lujan@state.nm.us or 505-225-6656 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos: Lesson Plans
DESCRIPTION:Día de los Muertos is observed on November 1st and 2nd in many countries across Latin American. The celebration is the result of a blending of Catholic Spanish traditions with Indigenous customs and beliefs. It is believed that on Día de los Muertos the veil between the spirit world and real world is lifted long enough for the souls of the deceased to reunite with their families and friends. Those who celebrate Día de los Muertos welcome home the spirits of lost loved ones with music\, food\, offerings\, and other colorful visuals traditions that vary from country to country and region to region. \nIn honor of Día de los Muertos\, we have developed a series of lesson plans that celebrate several of the visual traditions unique to this colorful Latin American holiday. Join us in making a tapete de arena like the ones found in Oaxaca\, México\, in crafting a barrilete inspired by the giant kites that soar over the cities of Santiago Sacatepéquez and Sumpango\, Guatemala\, or in designing a myth-based costume worthy of La Calabiuza in Tonacatapeque\, El Salvador. Although celebrated at the same time of year\, Día de los Muertos is not Latin American Halloween; it is a time for remembering lost loved ones and for honoring Latin American history and culture. \n \nClick thumbnail for the La Calabiuza lesson plan: \n \nClick thumbnail for the Barrilete lesson plan: \n \nClick thumbnail for the Tapete lesson plan:
