NHCC Children’s Bilingual Book Festival

History and Literary Arts Building

All events at the NHCC through April 30, 2020 have been cancelled / postponed. Please call the NHCC at 505-246-2261 for more information. 9 am to 5 pm The Children's Bilingual Book Festival takes place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in April of each year and features K-6 books in Spanish and English and Native Languages in English. There are author readings, a book fair, student storytelling, poetry performances, workshops for teachers and parents, and art and book-related activities for all ages, including teens. Art Project: Sombra

NHCC Campus 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM

  Today we are inspired by three artists,Cristina González, Jacob Sisneros and Paula Castillo. These artists have created large metal sculptures that create beautiful shadows and can be found on the NHCC campus. We hope their use of shapes and the sun inspire you to create your own sombra art! Premiere: K-12 Social Studies and Language Arts Educational Curriculum for “Mundos de Mestizaje”

5 pm Link Available HERE The History and Literary Arts program presents the premiere of a K-12 social studies and language arts educational curriculum inspired by "Mundos de Mestizaje," the buon fresco masterpiece on the NHCC campus by artist Frederico Vigil. By engaging with images and video of the fresco online, children and young adults, anywhere, are able to explore history, geography, civics, government, literature, and economics through lesson plans and activities. Herrera Internship Endowment

The Herrera Internship Endowment was created by Dr. Denise Herrera to honor her parents (Yolanda and Fred Herrera) and grandparents (Reyna and Mariano Herrera), who did not have the opportunity to pursue higher education. As a native New Mexican, Dr. Herrera has dedicated much of her academic and professional career to the advancement of underrepresented groups in higher education. As a participant in several diversity programs herself, Dr. Herrera has mentored students from elementary through postdoctoral levels. Día de los Muertos: Lesson Plans

Día de los Muertos is observed on November 1st and 2nd in many countries across Latin American. The celebration is the result of a blending of Catholic Spanish traditions with Indigenous customs and beliefs. It is believed that on Día de los Muertos the veil between the spirit world and real world is lifted long enough for the souls of the deceased to reunite with their families and friends.
