SUMMARY:Día de los Muertos: Community Ofrenda Exhibit 2019
DESCRIPTION:Each year the National Hispanic Cultural Center works with schools and community organizations to host an exhibit of ofrendas (altars) in celebration of Día de los Muertos. \nThe ofrendas will be placed throughout the Domenici Education Building and the Roy E. Disney Performing Arts Center. There is also a community ofrenda that you are welcome to contribute items in remembrance of your loved ones.  Keep in mind we are not responsible for any items that are lost or stolen. Please do not bring irreplaceable photographs or items.  We encourage photo copies. \nThis year we are working with 516 arts and are asking for a select number of submissions to be dedicated to the “Species in Peril” along the Rio Grande. \nWe can provide you with a list of plants and animals that are extinct or facing extinction along the Rio Grande.  For information on the exhibit at 516 Arts and programming https://www.516arts.org/ \nhttps://www.516arts.org/exhibitions/species-in-peril-along-the-rio-grande-contemporary-artists-respond \nFor more information about the call for entries to create an ofrenda for the exhibit\, click HERE.

Tour the ofrendas around the NHCC campus and enjoy music\, poetry\, traditional hot chocolate mexicano\, pan de muerto\, and the sharing of heartfelt memories. \nDía de Muertos is an annual traditional holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and many Hispanic communities. SUMMARY:Salud y Sabor celebrates Mexico and Día de los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:11:30 am – 2 pm \nFree Family Fun \nSalud y Sabor\, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network\, Street Food Institute\, and the NHCC is a free event with food\, art\, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition\, cooking\, healthy lifestyles\, and culture. \nOnce a month\, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh\, locally grown ingredients\, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults\, health screenings\, and live entertainment. An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes\, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners\, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music. SUMMARY:Diwali: The Festival of Lights
DESCRIPTION:5:30 pm – 7:30 pm \nDiwali is one of the biggest Hindu festivals\, celebrated in India with great enthusiasm and happiness for five continuous days. The third day is celebrated as the main Diwali festival\, or “Festival of Lights\,” and different varieties of colorful fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day\, people light diyas (lamps) and candles all around their houses. They perform Laxmi Puja in the evening and seek divine blessings from the Goddess of Wealth. The festival of Diwali is never complete without the exchange of gifts\, as people present Diwali gifts to all near and dear ones. \n$10 \n \nTickets are available at the INDIA Association of New Mexico or by calling 505-306-9624. \n\nThe title\, content\, photos/images and description for this event were provided to the NHCC by the organization renting the NHCC venue for the event.
