The foods of Afro peoples continue to incorporate ingredients of ancestral dishes and to preserve African ways of preparing ingredients native to the Americas. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. Each gathering in this series will focus of a different cultural aspect of the question: “Who or what is Latinidad?” Voces de Latinidad aims to feature unique voices from our community culminating in a short documentary and digital archive celebrating the rich diversity of our lived experiences. \nRecently featured in a New York Times article\, this first gathering will be led by UNM Professor of Spanish as a Heritage Language\, Damián Vergara Wilson\, PhD. \nFree community event. Register and save your spot below. \n \nOn May 18\, we invite all Hispanic\, Latina/o/x/e\, Chicano/a/x/e\, Burqueño/a/e\, Mestiza/o/e members of Barelas\, Atrisco\, the South Valley\, and surrounding neighborhoods to come and share how you identify culturally and how language shapes your reality and lived experiences.  Maybe you grew up speaking Spanish and keep it in your family or community\, or maybe you feel cut off from it. Either way\, we’d love for you to share your stories for an evening of discussion\, story-telling\, food-sharing\, and all around diversión! Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm \nSalon Ortega \nJoin us for an artist talk with Joel Salcido from Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave).  Joel will do a reading from his book\, The Spirit of Tequila and guests from the audience will have an opportunity for a Q&A followed by a book signing. \nThe Aliento a Tequila y el Arte de Agave (or The Spirit of Tequila and the Art of Agave) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape\, culture\, and traditions that gave birth to tequila\, Mexico’s national drink. In this series\, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that literally founded the industry\, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle.  Objects and paintings related to the theme of agave will be on display from the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum Permanent Collection and loans from various institutions and artist Hailey Marmolejo. \n

This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4\,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America. \nThe digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. Please register below or call the NHCC Welcome Center at 505-724-4771 for assistance. \nThis program is generously supported by AARP New Mexico.\nCarmen Calatayud is a poet and nonfiction writer whose work has appeared in print and online. She is a Larry Neal Poetry Award winner and a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts fellow. \nire’ne lara silva is the author of four poetry books among other publications\, and the recipient of a NALAC grant\, the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Award\, and the Texas Institute of Letters Shrake Award for Best Short Nonfiction\, among other accolades. \njo reyes-boitel l is a poet and playwright whose hybrid opera was chosen as a finalist for Guerilla Opera’s 2022 annual virtual festival. Along with their two books\, their work has appeared in numerous publications. \nAngelina Sáenz is an award-winning author and poet whose debut book of poetry was recently published. Her poems have been published in many journals and she is a Macondo Writer’s Workshop Fellow. \nJen Yáñez-Alaniz is a poet\, scholar\, educator\, activist\, and Pushcart Prize nominee for her poetry. She is currently working on a critical biography of Carmen Tafolla and her poems have appeared in a variety of publications.

DESCRIPTION:3:00 – 5:00 pm \nJoin us at the Hubbell House in the South Valley for the third Community Listening Session in a series of 6 for our Voces de Latinidad documentary film project\, featuring Joanna Keane Lopez. Each gathering in this series will focus on a different cultural aspect of the question: “Who or what is Latinidad?” Voces de Latinidad aims to feature unique voices from our community culminating in a short documentary and digital archive celebrating the rich diversity of our lived experiences. \nOn June 24\, we invite all people of Hispanic\, Latina/o/e/x\, Chicana/o/e/x\, Indigenous\, and New Mexican heritage from the communities of Barelas\, Atrisco\, the greater South Valley\, and surrounding neighborhoods to come and share how you identify culturally and how this shapes your reality and lived experiences. \nFree Community Event. Please register using the link below. \n \nSpeaker: Joanna Keane Lopez is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is informed through adobe\, paper\, clay\, wood\, textiles and song. She inherited the practice of working with adobe\, a mixture of mud and straw\, from her family who constructed\, maintained\, and lived in earthen homes. She is also informed by the teachings of enjarradoras and adoberas\, women who specialize in the traditional craft of earthen architecture who continue the practice today in the complex cultural landscape of New Mexico. \n*Note: Community Sessions will be filmed and some individuals may be selected for interviews. DESCRIPTION:9:30 am on the 4th Tuesday of each month \nOur Colcha community Workshop is open to all levels of experience in an informal setting. This workshop is instructed by Annette Gutierrez-Turk. Annette has taught this art form to groups internationally and at the NHCC for many years. She is also an award-winning artist\, most recently recognized in 2019 at Santa Fe Spanish Market. Annette will demonstrate as well as answer questions. We hope you will join us every month on the fourth Tuesday\, on zoom or in person.
